FA Compo: What Gives?

Richmond just won the flag, beats me why their supporters are so angry about this, i would like to think that they getting Tom Lynch for free as a F/A last had something to do with this outcome.

Regardless of how they came to it, well done AFL House for getting it right on and fair for a change 👍👍👍

Is whether a team wins the Premiership part of the calculations though? How do Lycett, Motlop and Frawley net West Coast, Geelong and Melbourne first-round compensation picks and Richmond get a second-round pick?

Besides, West Coast won the Premiership too when they received first-round compensation for Lycett. Brandon Ellis is currently 26, the same age as Frawley, Lycett and Motlop when they left their previous clubs for free agency. So, I just don't see what the difference is unless they are willing to make the process public so that we can actually see what they are basing this on. We're basically getting the same compensation for Brandon Ellis as we did for Tyrone Vickery, who was said to have been offered a deal of ~$500,000 for 2 years by Hawthorn.

We are bemused because the system of determining compensation just does not make sense. It almost seems like we are getting punished for having the 2 Premierships in 3 years.

AFL won't help big Vic clubs because the interstate sides will get upset, they do everything to please them.

like play The grand final at the mcg

Since when do the media know the exact, truthful situations of each player's contract?

They can't even get player names right half the time.

This makes it impossible to compare player A vs player B in free agency compensation

They would need to know the guaranteed salary in the contracts for every 25+ year old player in the league for next year, to work out which percentile the free agents fit into and predict the compensation bands.

Making player wages public would mean that the AFL would have to be consistent with the formula.

Yeah, the AFL would know. But the media? No chance

Can understand the frustration. You get situations like the compensation for Frawley and Motlop that are way over what they would’ve got for a trade but the AFL say “we had to give that compensation because that’s how the formula worked”, then you get Ellis on a contract that is higher than some other band 2 compensation free agents and they seemingly throw the formula out.

Not good for consistency at all but I think the compensation is pretty right. If it was a trade I’d expect Ellis to be traded for something between 35 and 45.

Not the biggest fan of compensation, I think we need it currently but one day I hope we get to the level where free agents get no compensation. Really I only get annoyed when compensation for a player is significantly more than what they’d get in a trade. Can understand any frustration with the lack of consistency across the board.

The problem is that players get offered money above their worth, but it means the compo the leaving club gets is so confusing. Ellis is a pretty average player get paid way more than he should, which makes the compo Richmond deserves confusing. Same from Lycett last year.

FA compensation should not exist given the economic profit obtained by the 2 clubs involved in any player movement, which in turn penalises the 16 other clubs. Unlike a trade it's not a zero-sum transaction so the rest get screwed.

Given it does exist though, Richmond should have received exactly what West Coast did last year for Lycett. There is simply no possible explanation which could justify the decision.

Just proves afl house is scared by the media. Its sad really they cant any thing right

But they did do the right thing this time, based on Ellis actual worth and value as a player (frankly I even consider pick 39 to be overs)

Now, no one is dispusting the system is wonky and some players in the past netted their club way overs) but hopefully this is the start of more realistical FA Compo.

Ellis is no A Grade or AA type player, just because he is dual premiership player doesn't mean he should commend a top price in FA Compo.

Damien Barrett should be congratulated for speaking up on what the majority of neutral footy fans were thinking about the compo for a battler like Ellis. He made a lot of sense.

No choice but to accept the AFL at its word that the terms of the Ellis deal fell just short of end of first round compo.

Some sources say $600K, some say $550K. Richmond will no doubt be in a position to directly compare the Ellis compo with that for Tomlinson - same age, same position, one would think similar terms at Melbourne.

The clubs know - obviously - as the terms must be stated so that the club can decide whether to match. Managers know. Players know. Stuff leaks out...

Can't have a system where a player's worth is determined subjectively. Salary per annum determines the worth, plus a modifier for years above 25yo.
Ellis is no A Grade or AA type player

Has previously been AA squad.

What did Hawks get for Buddy? Tigers should have got similar for Ellis? Buddy was one of the best players in the comp. Ellis isn’t even an A grader.

Daisy Thomas compensation was higher than the Franklin compensation that year.

The rort that was Motlop for Ablett was a farce and just shows how corrupted and manipulative the AFL is.

The rewarding of future compromised drafts for the mismanagement and mediocrity of a team that no one cares about or only watches when their team is playing them (Suns) is further proof. Yep compromising the draft for another 3 years is going to help with player retention 🙄.

The rumoured multi million “ambassadors” at GWS that are paid outside of the salary cap in trying to make that team relevant. The swans being banned for trading and having its cola removed, because it poached Buddy Franklin from when it was believed he was Giants bound. So Ellis being down graded to that pick, despite others being higher could have a lot to do with GWS being so shit in the grand final.

Free agency was only brought in initially to help GWS and Suns to poach high end talent without losing its draft picks or losing players. Last year was the first year, you could start poaching Suns players via free agency. this year it was GWS turn.

I’m expecting rule changes to occur, so that the AFL’s love children can continue to prosper at the expense of the other clubs. Not realising that very few people actually care about them. Them two teams will drain the funds for a lot of years yet. The AFL will continue to punish the other clubs in the hope that they become relevant.

What did Hawks get for Buddy?

System works against the premiers by effectively halving the number of tiers.

First round becomes the same as end of first round, second round the same as end of second round (as with Ellis), etc. I'm actually OK with this aspect.

For once-in-a-generation players like Franklin there probably needs to be a priority pick category.

Why not just scrap compensation picks? Or scrap free agency. Its essentially a trade because of the compensation picks and theyre too inconistent to make it fair and reasonable so just scrap them. Make a FREE agent FREE, might be the best way forward for mine.
