No big surprises but they did leave out Wilmot

BRISBANE LIONS

B:
Daniel Rich, Harris Andrews, Darcy Gardiner

HB: Keidan Coleman, Marcus Adams, Brandon Starcevich

C: Zac Bailey, Jarrod Berry, Hugh McCluggage

HF: Cam Rayner, Eric Hipwood, Jack Gunston

F: Charlie Cameron, Joe Daniher, Lincoln McCarthy

FOLL: Oscar McInerney, Lachie Neale, Josh Dunkley

I/C: Will Ashcroft, Jarryd Lyons, Noah Answerth, Dayne Zorko

In: Josh Dunkley, Jack Gunston, Will Ashcroft*

Out: Mitch Robinson, Dan McStay

WE SAY: We could be looking at the premiership favourites right here. The Lions were arguably the biggest winners of the trade period after adding boom recruits Josh Dunkley and Jack Gunston to provide big boosts to the midfield and forward line respectively. Gunston is an upgrade on new Magpie Dan McStay, while Dunkley fleshes out an already potent midfield. Brisbane may have the most balanced, deepest line-up in the competition, with virtually no holes. Will Ashcroft is a rare case of a player that we both know will get to the Lions via the draft and could well be in the best 22 come round one next season.

You can only fit in 22. If you’re out you’re not unlucky, you are simply not good enough to be in this team if everyone’s running at full potential. Ashcroft is the one I (and many others, I know) am most excited about. Has the “how good can he be” about him, we know he’s got the goods, but if he’s goes bang from the start it’s a massive game changer for the Lions.

On paper, the 2023 team looks incredibly strong, with up to 30 players capable of making the best 22.
Obvious improvements needed from this year are defensive pressure on opposition mids, and stop giving up goals to turnovers.
I’d like to see Berry use his defensive skills and play as a mid/tall back, possibly replacing Gardiner or Adams.
I’d have Robertson in the side as a lockdown mid. Nearly every round this year, the oppositions best onballer had a big game, high stats.
I’d put Rayner in the centre. I think he is now mature enough to take that responsibility.

B. Berry. Andrews. Payne/Gardiner

HB. Starcevich. Adams. Coleman

C. McCluggage. Rayner. Ashcroft

HF. Hipwood. Gunston. Bailey

F. Cameron. Daniher. Zorko

R. Mcinerney. Dunkley. Neale

Int. Wilmot. Robertson. Rich. Lyons. Fort

Emerg. McCarthy. Mathieson. Answerth. Lohmann. Tunstill. Prior.
I think all these emergencies should get reasonable rotation through the team next year.

I agree with your emergency list getting plenty of games with the addition of Ah Chee and Madden as well. I'd like to see Lohmann and Prior in particularly start to impose themselves in the reserves and bash the door down for senior selection. It would be great if guys like Henry Smith, Kalin Lane, Carter Michael, Blake Coleman and Jasper Fletcher could push for senior games as well. I am also curious to see if Daryl White Jr(Subject to him actually being aded to our rookie list officially) can play any footy next year. He is 26 so he needs to make a case relatively early.

The old man says that Dunkley isnt a rover, but Lachie is ;)

Nearly all the sides I see on here, we still are too slow in our backline.

eg:

B: Daniel Rich, Harris Andrews, Darcy Gardiner

HB: Keidan Coleman, Marcus Adams, Brandon Starcevich

Our Mids may look stronger with the inclusion of Dunkley which will help our leakage in the backline. Wilmot and Payne may help but I do not believe our backline at this stage is go enough to take the next and final step.

Also our game plan has proved it does not work. Changes in our coaching department has not happened, so are we going to get the same old game style again that has been a failure. Time will tell???

I am a little hesitant on Payne until he gets some aggression in his game. Same with Fullerton. I cant see any successful player in the AFL without some aggression/mongrel which both of these guys desperately need quickly.
I don't disagree, but at the same time don't totally agree.
Thought Payne (who only gets a game when one of the three are out) has done pretty well, and not that it matters because Gardiner has resigned a 3 or 4 year deal (even though you posted he was considering his playing future with all his apparent injuries).

Tom seems to be taking a little longer but thought he showed some encouraging signs against Hawthorne and later part of the year in the VFL and IMO is progressing admittedly a little slower than anticipated.

Because Lions are in the flag 'window' unfortunately I don't see either of the two getting a decent crack at it for 2023.

'Desperately needs quickly' implies that Tom might be in danger of being delisted and Payne traded out next year?

"Desperately need quickly" means that if they dont improve their game, they wont be considered good enough at the highest level. No club can continue to carry list spots unless those players give them improvement where improvement is needed & expected. The timing of that depends on:

a) If they have aggression / mongrel in them at all. (to be determined)
b) How quickly they can bring that to their game. (if they have it)

P.S. I am so happy that Dizzy decided to re-sign. I hope he gets some luck on his side now and can play a season without injury wrecking his game again.

considering your our 'insider' have to assume the club is planning to get rid of both of them by 2023 or maybe even Tom after this year's draft?

yeap i don't mind Dizzy re-signing, but based on form and need, would not have offered min: 3 with likely a 4th year option.

Seriously? How do you translate that out of what I said?

Both Tom & Jack have now been in the AFL system for a reasonable time and both have played 20 games or more. It's pretty obvious they are capable of holding down a regular spot if/when the opportunity presents, but haven't quite nailed their spot in the 22 yet. My take is that they both lack aggression/mongrel in their game &, given their time on our list, now is the time for them to step up & cement their place in the 22. Saying that all means "the club is planning to get rid of them both by 2023" is a bit bizarre or maybe tongue in cheek and I didn't catch on.

A fit Gardner is real important to us and our backline in my opinion. His re-signing was smart by both he & the club....in my opinion.

“There are some elite midfields in this comp. Brisbane has Oscar McInerney in the ruck, they’ve got Josh Dunkley, Jarrod Berry, Jarryd Lyons, Lachie Neale, Will Ashcroft as the number one pick, Hugh McCluggage, Cam Rayner and Zac Bailey."

Menzel has us in the top 3 midfields in the league.

There are two big off-season additions and a few headaches for the Lions to consider before they hit round one. Josh Dunkleyadds to a strong midfield, which might make things tricky for Jarryd Lyons to win a spot after a groin injury hampered him in the back half of 2022. Lyons and Deven Robertson, who played well during the Finals series, could push their way in with strong pre-seasons, but spots are tight. And then there's ready-made father-son prospect Will Ashcroftwho is yet to officially join the club, but will be pressing to make the 22 as well. The wing spots are tricky as well, but Noah Answerth and Callum Ah Chee have both shown they have an intent to defend. Jaxon Prior is unlucky, while Jarrod Berrycould also be used there. Jack Gunston's acquisition adds to an already potent forward line, which lost Dan McStay in the trade period. - Michael Whiting

B: Darcy Gardiner, Harris Andrews, Brandon Starcevich

I would have Jarrod Berry replace Cal AhChee on the wing and Bailey to replace Zorko in the starting line up, Zorko to the bench, Dev Rob to replace Cal on the bench with Cal to emergency.

A big No IMO re Payne trade.

Adam’s turns 30 next June. Has been very injury prone at bulldogs, and has missed quite a bit of footy at the lions too. Now concussions to be wary of too.

Payne only just turned 23 this month. Has a lot of good footy ahead of him. I think his decision making (back his marking over fisting the ball so often, like Steven May) and confidence is only going to grow.

His marking is exceptional (when he backs himself) as is his strength.

Payne, Andrews and Adams are my choice as starting KPD’s for 2023.

Ah Chee > Answerth. Not even close IMO
Personally, I think AhChee has given us all he has got (which may not be a popular opinion), he is a solid workman like player, but I honestly don’t think he has got much more to give.
Answerth on the other hand has still got more development to go, if put on a wing for an extended period of time. He tends to lower the eyes much more when playing on the wing with a bit more time as opposed to just bombing it long when under pressure in the backline.
Both are defensively minded but I just think Answerth will have more development when comparing the 2.
