first test of the aussie summer 23/24

Steve Waugh was just an example of Australia giving a Test prospect plenty of chances and 'molly-coddling' because of his unique set of skills. As for the rest, I'm not suggesting anyone move around the order, Mitch got a nice hundred, but other than that, doesn't demand selection, particularly in light of his long record. Green to replace Mitch.

Even early on Green‘s record is vastly superior to Marsh who has a very poor Test record.

Better, not sure about "vastly"

Batting average 33 v 27
Bowling average 36 v 40
Want all rounders to ave more with the bat than ball. Green is minus 3, Marsh is a near preposterous 13.

Green‘s ton in India was far more meritorious than the Marsh ton in England.

Of course the two Marsh tons in Oz were on appalling roads. Even Cook got a,double in Melbourne.

Cook? You mean arguably the best opener of the 21st century so far?

it was the end of his Test career and his form had dipped. He had really struggled on that tour here.

Agree he was a magnificent opener.

Ponting also scored a 200 several years after he was cooked. Gun batters pulling off a cracking innings in their twilight years happens. It's still not a good comparison.

The G was an autobahn for that Test.

And yes along with Ponting, Tubby’s triple and Waugh’s SCG ton are other standout last hurrahs from mighty players rendered mortal by age.

The thing about Cam Green is that he is probably still the best bat in Australia under the age of 25.

If he's not in the test team he's likely going to score a shit ton of runs in shield/marsh cup/BBL and then on merit be back in the team anyway. I would have preferred him in shield than the world cup tbh anyway but I guess you can't ignore what he did in IPL.

Dropping him was reasonable, and not picking him to start the summer is probably also reasonable but I can guarantee we're having the same conversation in a couple of months anyway (the where does he play).

The really annoying thing (for like the 5th year in a row) is that right when we're having to try and decide about 1-2 spot in the test team there will be no long form cricket until Feb, even just one more round of shield would be nice. But that's flogging a dead horse at this point.

I actually do think he can open as well tbh.

For me and I have outlined my arguments above in previous posts

If it comes down to this.....if the replacment for Warner....is down to Bancroft Renshsaw harris or Green

I would take green over them any day of the week....regardless of positions in the batting order ...I would back green to even open over those outlined. I just think he is he the better cricketer

But I am a little bit biased to Greenie.....just a little lol ;)

If you put it that way, then I am all onboard with Green opening.

I wouldn't be asking Green to open under any circumstances and I don't want to rob Peter to pay Paul by having Head open.

My preference is Green to replace Mitch, but it's not the end of the world if Mitch plays the first Test, but if he fails twice, Green should be straight back in. It's a shame there's no Shield for Green and he's even opted out of BBL.

you're only as good as your last match.

marsh scored 16 & 6 and took a wicket - we lost that game.

i'm guessing both will be named in like a 14-15 man squad come the weekend.
And the 2 matches before that since his recall he scored 118, 28, 51, 35* & took 2 wickets...That's more than good enough to hold your place as the allrounder.

The last person on earth you would expect an absolutely horrific take from, Ricky Ponting, is advocating for Glenn Maxwell to play test cricket this Summer. What on earth if the point of giving a 35 year a few token home tests against teams we should beat easily? Absolutely nothing to gain if his inclusion means we leave Cam Green out and deny him an opportunity to gain some experience and confidence by scoring runs and taking wickets against slightly weaker teams. I simply can not get my head around the rationale of it all. Spilled over emotion from his WC feats I guess? I love watching Maxi do his thing in white ball cricket as much as the next person but there is absolutely zero reason for anyone to genuinely suggest he plays test cricket this Summer. Found it a very weird take considering Ricky is generally on the ball with most comments he makes.
Or he’s still on the ball and you’ve never understood the concept of a sphere?

The frustrating thing with Green is he has never looked comfortable at 6. Would love to get him up the order but these spots are locked. Thinking post Warner, Bancroft deserves first shot, but surely tempting to reshuffle the order to get Green higher.

Thinking something like:
Khawaja
Marnus
Smith
Green
Head
Marsh

Give the crowd something to look forward to… Head at 5, Maxwell at 6.
