first test of the aussie summer 23/24

The frustrating thing with Green is he has never looked comfortable at 6. Would love to get him up the order but these spots are locked. Thinking post Warner, Bancroft deserves first shot, but surely tempting to reshuffle the order to get Green higher.

Thinking something like:
Khawaja
Marnus
Smith
Green
Head
Marsh
That's just crazy IMO.

Labs averages plus 50 batting at 3 and people want to throw the whole battling line up out to accommodate Green.

Don't care whether its Bancroft or Renshaw, but one of those has to open with Khawaja.

Marsh is the incumbent so until he fails or Green forces his way in by weight off runs, he shouldn't be playing.

I wouldn't be asking Green to open under any circumstances and I don't want to rob Peter to pay Paul by having Head open.

My preference is Green to replace Mitch, but it's not the end of the world if Mitch plays the first Test, but if he fails twice, Green should be straight back in. It's a shame there's no Shield for Green and he's even opted out of BBL.
But local district stuff wouldnt be the worst for him, could work on his craft a bit with little pressure.

I would be including Neser instead of Boland, and if Starc went down I would be playing Neser instead of Morris

Warner did his time for ball tampering if anything he did way too much time so it should have nothing to do whether he is picked 5 years later, you can argue the case we should just be moving on at start of summer as their is merit to that argument but thats got **** all to do with ball tampering the real issue is warners replacements kinda suck and all have glaring issues and the selectors clearly dont rate any of them very highly so they are kicking the can down the road they arent doing it to reward warner.

Just to put numbers on how bad these guys have been at test level warner during his last 2 year awful form slump in tests still averages 30 with the bat well you know who didnt even average 30 in their test career bancroft harris and renshaw, thats far more concerning to me than whether warner gets 3 more tests.

Part of the issue is between now and the next test summer against India which shapes up as our biggest home series in quite some time we have 3 tests against Pakistan, 2 against the west indies and then 2 away against NZ. Because of accomodating Warners retirement we now only have 4 tests to try and work out who will be at the top of the order against one of the best bowling attacks going around. I understand the options aren't great but having an extra 3 tests to work out our future batting structure is more desirable I believe.

i thought murphy and inglis would travel as potential concussion subs, but I guess Inglis is in Perth anyways.

you're assuming warner will play the entire series v pakistan.
the squad has not been named for melb and syd.
the odds are warner now signs off on his own terms in sydney, but could 2 low scores in perth make the selectors do a U-turn ?

bancroft, renshaw and harris won't have an opportunity to press their cases any further.

they've had opportunities in the test arena previously and haven't set the world on fire.

renshaw 14 tests @ 29 - 1 ton (FC ave 38)
harris 14 tests @ 25 (FC ave 40)
bancroft 10 tests @ 26 (FC ave 39)

total 38 tests @ 27 - (63 innings, 1 test ton)

Agree,Boland and Morris to miss out.Toss of the coin between Green and Marsh and will go Marsh misses out but tough call.
MM for me.

Bailey pretty much saying it will be Marsh.

Men's selection panel chair George Bailey said the incumbents had "earnt the opportunity to start in our first home Test match" since an incredible winter for Australian cricket that saw them win the World Test Championship and successfully retain the Ashes in England.

All 3 to play in the Prime Minister,s game December 6 v WI and also I think Green.

I think its likely he will see out the pakistan series and I increasingly believe a batting re-shuffle is much more likely than a specialist opener being picked (Have always wanted Renshaw to go well however hasn't taken his chances).
If we are to trial a Marnus, Head or even Marsh at the top, who ever it may be I would just prefer we get utilise as many tests as possible before India next summer.
It's a weird predicament Australia is in as some of the younger guys coming through the domestic scene show some real promise however from 25-30 it appears we are very limited. A real shame guys like Ward and Jewell have struggled to back up their strong previous shield season.

People are not going to like it but most of these ideas are pie in the sky dreams. Bancroft is going to be given first crack after the summer. Marsh will start this summer and the only spot for Green is if Marsh fails.

If Bancroft fails they may look at shuffling some positions if needed but they are not going to start off with that.

Marnus could slot in as the opener, Smith 3, Head, Marsh, Maxwell, Green, Carey/ Ingliss could fight over the rest.

Still don't know why we couldn't go with the following batting order:

Usman
Head
Marnus
Smith
Green
Marsh
Carey/ Inglis

Head up the top would give us some real fire-power, like warner pre-ban. Test cricket is changing, a side for the times.
