I'll wait till there's more info ....everyone's assuming it's McAsey's mental health

If so .....it's more likely a timeframe wouldn't have been announced ....the Club simply saying McAsey's taking time off ......as it stands, we're only talking 3 weeks off
He's just had 6 weeks off.
He ain't comin back

Draft on talent and a rigorous personality and drive/desire examination.
Hypothetical:

What if he had all the drive and desire until it dawned on him that he was recruited by us?

Pre-draft, how would anyone have gauged Horne-Francis in terms of drive/desire.

Then consider how depressing it can be just being a supporter of this club at times.

That's a huge assumption !

McAsey spoke to a couple of Clubs, that has been reported ....who instigated the meetings, is again an assumption

I daresay, 4-6 players also did the same ...albeit, those convo's didn't hit the press
McAsey was at the airport and said he was talking to a Vic club. Now did he do that without the clubs consent? I doubt it given he told the reporter and the trade didn’t happen, why? What’s more plausible, the other club wasn’t interested or McAsey and the Crows weren’t? Given his battles, which wouldn’t have happened over night, we would have helped him move on.

Given his struggles, imagine how deflating it would have been hoping to be traded home and having no takers. He was a high draft pick and thought footy would have been his career, instead he was struggling in the SANFL not even playing the position he was drafted for.

It’s a lot to process when you’re already battling.

Hope he’s ok.

I don’t know enough about where he compared to the rest of his draft year, but I feel this could be an example of drafting a player on need (replacing Talia) over talent.

Doesn’t Haggis say ‘draft for talent, trade for need’? Feel like we may not have done this here.
We traded down in the draft with picking him in kind so technically true to his motto?

We just can’t let him go without him specifically stating he wants to go, otherwise we will be seen as cutting him adrift and not supporting him.

So there’s really no point just posting “let him go”
Fair point and I guess it could be other reasons too in needing to be close to family. Hopefully whatever situation he's in it works out for him, whether that includes footy or not.

Twomey's article had other clubs with interest and prepared to move up if he was still available the day before the draft....

Yes, other clubs are often wrong too. Especially shit ones like Gold Coast who were the biggest chance of trading up.

It also says this:

“It would also likely see McAsey – if no pick swaps were struck – get through to the Hawks at pick No.11, where he had been strongly linked until AFL.com.au revealed Adelaide's interest in him.”

Fact is, he has proven to be an awful pick, and we could have had Serong, Young, Day, or any number of better prospects.

No disputing it's turned into an awful pick but let's not kid ourselves he was highly thought to be the best KPD prospect in the draft with no close challengers and we obviously saw him as Talia's replacement in a year or two who was already showing signs of distress.
Funny how our dud first picks are just bad luck and nothing to do with the recruiter

Why bother having/paying a network of recruiters/scouts, we could just use the "phantom drafts" if we are just selecting by group think.

If we are paying guys to do their job properly I'd expect better, how about someone that can see through or past the group think and select guys that can football.

Mcasey won the vic metro MVP over Rowell and Anderson

He was absolutely no dud , not sure he’s got the personality for the battle so I think we bombed in our interview / psych process

As for the kid let’s just hope he’s well , football isn’t everything
Yes, and most years in College Basketball the major awards go to players with poor athletic profiles, and they fall in drafts as a result.

McAsey has always been slow. Slow KPDs in the top 10 of a draft is a recipe for disaster. Just because he was rated as the best KPD in the draft by a lot of people doesn’t mean those people were going to be correct. They weren’t.

There is also no evidence whatsoever that any other club would have used a top 6 pick on him. Just us.

Yuck.

Was it a ranking from within industry? Or just basement nerds
You were $1.04 to reply to that post with this question haha.

But look, regardless of what people think of Twomey, he was very clear that McAsey was getting through to Hawthorn’s selection (which ended up drifting to Pick 13) if we passed at pick 6 and no other pick swaps occurred. This info comes directly from the clubs.

It just seems bizarre that a KPD with absolutely no elite athletic traits was being taken in the top 6 ahead of Serong and Young (I can understand him going ahead of guys like Pickett and Day - they weren’t exactly “can’t miss” prospects).

One thing I’d be fascinated to know is where the good clubs of the last 5-6 years rated McAsey in that draft. Geelong took the second coming of Jesus Christ Sam De Koning at Pick 19. Is it possible that they (and maybe some other clubs that aren’t shit) rated De Koning over McAsey? Or were they settling for what they thought was the second best KPD in that draft?

We’ll never know. But I don’t think we’ll ever see Hamish pulling the trigger on a treacle slow KPD inside pick 10 again. Or probably any other recruiter in the country for that matter.
