Flick the switch Ross: time to focus on attack not defence

that was his mantra at St Kilda

The attacking side at Saints never came despite having at the time the best forward in the league.

although the saints did go 20 wins and 2 losses in 2009.

Unfortunately for ross, it appears he has only one game plan!

Bulls**t. They were practically the highest scoring side in 2009.
and it never happened again. Why was that? could not have been the players. the players were the same !

the coach? maybe he got found out a bit, with only plan A

Riewoldt played a ripper season in 2009 kicking nearly 80 goals. Really one of the better seasons you'd see from a key forward. Pav's not going to do that anymore, and there's no one else on the list capable.

Much like in a public company, punters are too concerned about the short term.
We are a middle of the road team, at least we have a top line coach now, give it time.

I think the negative of the gameplan is that it stifles the Fremantles x-factor type players.

When they're attacking it may not always come off and you may get hurt the other way but the layers learn through this and become better. It seems he is babying the list too much, there is talent their but it doesn't get the chance to blossom so to speak under ross.

Good luck for the rest of the season, 5-4 isn't too bad this year :thumbsu:

The problem isn't the primary game plan. It can work.

The problem is the lack of a plan B. An effective one anyway. 'McPharlin to full forward' doesn't count. 'Dawson to full forward' isn't even a plan, it's borderline tanking.

It was deadset obvious after the Weagles kicked the first couple of goals in the 3rd that the game was opening up, and our tactics that worked relatively well in the 1st half were not now. Was there a change in our approach? No. It still involved kicking long down the line, Sandi tapping it to their midfielders and flooding the backline with all 18 players. What did Lyon think was going to happen?

At least try something different. How about get one of the ruckman to lead down the corridor and bash it forward (think NAB Cup vs North 2 years ago)? How about dropping a couple of players back into our half when the ball is inside their 50? Sure it increases their chances of scoring, but it increases ours as well. And it would at least be something different and change the way they went about the game as well. Doing the same when we were getting dominated wasn't going to do shit.

100% agree
We do face lots of problems with player aptitude and attitude, but the coach has to take some blame. The plan the last two weeks has been nothing more than a Terry Wallace flood back into our own 50 and you could see that as soon as we got a few goals down in both games we had no idea how we were going to get out of it. The eagle adjusted their style at half time and we had no answer up in the box or down on the field

Agree, the flood works well if teams try to penetrate, but the short ball movement the eagle used chopped us up. One on one still has it's place, but Ross needed to change it up. Failed!

Give Ross time, the guy is a tactical genius...

Ross has coached teams which hang out on the shortest grounds in the country. What are your thoughts about the defend and run plan not being suited to Subiaco?

I've noticed at times this year the break out has happened that the mid carrying the ball has run out of puff after sprinting 80m but still being 70 from goal. In previous years with Sydney and St Kilda on the SCG and Etihad you're inside 50 after sprinting 80m. This gives you the option of kicking at goal, or at least over the head of the last forward / defender.

Case in point was Ballantyne making the break on the weekend. He was shagged 80m from goal with only Griffin / Glass to kick at. Ended up bombing at the contest which got rebounded straight away.

lyons record at subi was exceptional. dont think the ground is the reason. he just doesnt have the list to do what he needs to do

To be honest, I didn't mind the Dawson move. Could have snared a goal in the pocket from the Hill shank (which people are thinking was a pass, but wasn't,) and was rough not to get the mark in the forward 50.

That's probably more opportunities than some of our more illustrious KPP's.

I hate to say it, but at St Kilda at least that never happened, Ross knows no other way than defence and when we needed a quick goal in the last quarters of the 2009 and 2010 Grand Finals they never came.
Pretty sure Schnieder missed a sitter, 35 m out on his own, slight angle, few minutes to go. Other side of the post and Saints had their first AFL cup. Can't see how it was Ross' fault that Shneider missed a kick most U14 forwards would hit.
