Here's the full video, sad listening, why don't we just get rid of that "celebration" day and have a day somewhere else on the calendar to celebrate togetherness, inclusiveness and empathy. >

Right onIm glad we have a club where these boys feel comfortable opening up like that about a difficult issue.
Im a brown immigrant. I grew up here from the age of 4. I always felt like a bit of an outsider given the accent with which my parents spoke, my skin tone, my parents culture etc and just the general vibe of 90s Brisbane and political parties like One Nation in the news. I was only 12 but I could see what was being said in the news and sometimes openly in public. One time at our public school someone had grafitied 'coons go home'. I had no idea (and still really dont know) what a coon is but the way some people acted around me (both well wishing types and malicious types) made me realise I might be a coon. I never really felt a strong connection to Australia until the 2000 Olympics. Seeing Cathy Freeman achieve so much and be so widely celebrated as a brown person made me feel like I could belong too. I don't know how Cathy feels about Australia day but if her people feel marginalised by January 26th then I too feel uncomfortable. She and other Indigenous folk should feel welcomed to celebrate this nation.
The nation I want to celebrate isnt the colony started by a royal bloodline directly involved the genocide of cultures and people all across the globe. The nation I want to celebrate isnt the aparthied style federation founded in 1901 which still counted Indigenous folk as fauna. I want to celebrate modern Australia where people like my parents can migrate and build a successful business, where refugees and migrants from all around the world have an opportunity to make something of themselves, where gay folks can marry without discrimination, where Indigenous folks can feel welcomed to learn about theirbown culture and recieve sincere apologies for their past treatment.
I dont know what date would be best for that but it certainly isnt January 26th.
Personally I hope we can kick that disgusting monarchy away and become a proper republic with our own identity that celebrates what modern Australia has become instead of mythologysing the genocides in our colonial era
So true.Without trying to take sides, as much as possible.
As a medical specialist working in hospitals, all I can say is that people are entitled to make their choices, but also need to bear consequences of their actions. There is just a bit too much "I will do what I feel like, and if things head south someone needs to bail me out".
We as human beings are all inherently self centred, but we really do ourselves a favour if we think of the people around us, whether family, friends, colleagues or the community. Sometimes people's choices come down to whether they only thinking of themselves, or thinking of others also.
Not happy with our don't celebrate the date crap.
I did and will always celebrate being Australian. I don't have a strong stance on the date we celebrate. Before the PC brigade start I have given work and trained alot of indigenous people with varying results. I have lived in remote communities with them and worked alongside some great individuals. Giving our indigenous and all our youth the skills and opportunities to better their lives is what is needed. Is what happened in the past wrong? Absolutely. Has the nation apologised for these inhumane acts? Yes.
As someone who has never been disrespectful to anyone due to their race/origins but have been abused, filmed and cursed (along with my family) by certain indigenous individuals.
I feel I have every right, as does any other Australian citizen to celebrate our Lucky Country.
I have emailed the Club for an explanation. I strongly suspect (hope) that this is the work of a staffer in the Media Department and not a Board sanctioned action.. This is a divisive move naively made in an attempt as inclusion. Football Clubs are diverse groups brought together by a love of the game. The introduction of political positions can only lead to a dilution of focus on the Clubs primary goal of winning games and a splitting of the supporter group. Individual players or staff members are free in our society to express their views in their own way. It should be kept to that. We all look to Sport to provide escape from everyday troubles and a place of enjoyment. When I first read it I let out a groan. I thought ‘the club’ includes and represents all financial members, and all financial members won’t agree with the comment.
When I thought about it more I get where they were coming from, IF it was a comment made on behalf of our indigenous players. If it wasn’t, and it’s the clubs stance on behalf of all, including paid up members, then it’s inappropriate, in my opinion.
I’m not here to debate the date - I wouldn’t be against changing it (but to what date?); but yeah I wasn’t a fan of it at all.
I have always just called it a family day and a good opportunity to celebrate that. All I will say on Australia Day here is that it doesn't strike any significant cord with me and never has, it's just another holiday like Queens Birthday, Ekka show day, Easter, Christmas. I enjoyed the days off when I was working but I would not of called any of them a celebration... now that I am retired they are even more meh.

I'm happy with the clubs stance on the date. I've never had strong feelings one way or the other on the date. But a number of indigenous friends and family have expressed their distaste over the date and I am inclined to support them. Considering how much the day has changed over the years it really shouldn't matter that it gets changed again. As long as we still get a day off, Who really cares?
They may have a strong issue with the date I don't either way and would not have any problem with a change. My point is that here we are discussing what is a politically divisive issue on a Football Club thread. Sport and Politics don't mix anywhere.I'm happy with the clubs stance on the date. I don't mind the idea of the date of the 1971 census that counted all Australians for the first time, but I feel the most Australian idea is #2.Yeah pretty much agree. Can't be January 1st though, that's already a holiday
I'll put up a few options.
1. The day that coincides with when we won the America's Cup.
2. Pick the largest span of time between any national public holiday in Australia & place it right in the middle to break that crappy work block up.
3. The day that coincides with the miracle on grass
4. January 25th.
5. January 27th.
There will always be invasion day marches / protests on whatever new day we pick though. But if it brings some peace to a portion of the population that currently feel hurt then bring it on.
When was Canberra founded? It should be the 30th of August, the founding of the city of Melbourne...You know it makes sense
Just to show both sides of politics are equally inept >
I'm also not adverse to a floating holiday. Say the last Friday or Monday of January. Guaranteed long weekends are always funYeah pretty much agree. Can't be January 1st though, that's already a holiday
