Can only guess that Buddy has said he will only go if traded. Its the only thing that would explain the words that came out of Silvagni's mouth.

If I had been at a club and experienced the 'love' and success he has and I was going to leave for an irresistible amount of cash........I would demand a fair deal for my club. Not sure wether I could do it or not but I would make my feelings known. Even more so if the AFL is going to put its hand into it's pocket. If Franklin is not worth Pick 1 who is?

The argument re no compensation for free agents gives me the shites. He is once in a generation player (like Ablett). He is not a 'dime a dozen' elite mid or fringe player looking for a new home or better deal.

Am I right in saying that he is the first player that is being lured from one AFL club to another with the promise of ambassadorial payments? Or does Ablett also fit into that category? Either way I think this may be the reason that the AFL accepts that compensation is in order. Whats more they probably realise the unique value of Franklin in dollars and cents (ie what its worth to GWS and what it will cost Hawthorn financially). Although it wasn't free agency the closest thing resembling the scenario is the Ablett deal where Geelong were compensated rather well.

haven't gone through the 133 pages of comments, so maybe this has been asked before, but is there any scope for buddy signing with hawthorn, and hawthorn doing something with his fashion label afterwards? stocking it on the website, in their shops and the brand getting a bigger slice of the cut than they would in the retail market?

would that still be considered 3rd party deal?
If you're suggesting we find an under-the-table way of paying Franklin the millions he would otherwise receive at GWS then my response would be No, we aren't Carlton.

Countless Hawthorn greats in the past have been offered more money to play elsewhere but have stayed out of loyalty to the club. If Franklin wants to stay, he'll stay. If he wants to become a mercenary like Judd he can G&GF.

Perhaps we could employ the "Sue Jarman clause".

For those of you not wanting to wade through countless pages of this never ending thread, allow me to sum up everything said so far:
  • Why does Buddy want to wait to the end of the year to sign? I don't like the look of this.
  • Damn you, Vlad. You "may or may not offer 'ambassadorial' money"? Get your hand off it.
  • Buddy will sign, he's just waiting until just before the finals as a team lifter.
  • How the hell can GWS offer $2 mill a year? F***ing AFL screwing us over again.
  • Buddy means more to us off field than on field. Sure he brings in supporters, but how good would we be with a top flight mid-fielder in trade?
  • There won't be a trade! He's a restricted free agent. All we can do is match other club's offers.
  • Bloody hell Buddy, either tell us you're staying or piss off! I can't take this any more!
  • Freo says they're not after Franklin, but who can trust that snake-in-the-grass Lyon?
  • How about Whitfield? There's been talk of him wanting to come to us...
  • Ffs, for the LAST TIME, we CAN'T trade for Buddy. GWS have first pick in the draft. Why would they offer a trade if they don't need to?
  • Still nothing? I'll try this thread again next week.
  • AFL says they'll only offer ambassadorial money on a trade.
  • Buddy will sign with us. No doubt.
  • I don't trust that Sheedy. He's just a puppet of the AFL.
  • There's talk GWS could offer pick 1. We could get Boyd, who is supposedly better than Cameron. We want another pick too (coz we need a midfielder).
  • Read my lips - we can't trade Buddy for high draft picks. He will walk and all we'll get is pick 20!!
  • AFL can't afford another issue like this, not after the Essendon drug scandal. They've already got too many club's noses out of joint. They have no choice but to make a trade happen.
  • The argument re no compensation for free agents gives me the shites. He is once in a generation player (like Ablett).

There. Now you're up to date. ;)

Given that 3rd party payments and ambassadorships are designed to assist clubs in retaining players who are getting paid less than their market value, could we approach the AFL and ask 'in order for us to compete with the open market offers we believe that Bud has great value as an ambassador for football in NZ , would the AFL consider contributing $500,000 per season as part of the contract package from Hawthorn?'

more than likely the hawks, and me, will get laughed out of HQ and Bigfooty. But shouldn't these ambassadorships be available to any player in any team if it has value?
There's 4 million people in NZ and only 2 mil in western Syd, plus he's probably known equally in both parts.

I nominate you to write this to Vlad. It must be in language he can understand. Go to it Jethro!

Vlad is one of the most loquaicious speakers out there. He hopes that people get confused from his excessive rambling so that they forget he has no point. Much like many bureaucrats. I'm on it.... I'll just add lots of unnecessary words!

If Vlad had the number one draft pick he'd draft himself.

The only way we get anything for Franklin is the (unlikely) scenario that the AFL deems that they don't want the image of giving GWS another leg up so they come out with "The current deal does not fit our Free Agency structure criteria due to player ambassador payments which are to be made outside the traditional salary cap, therefore GWS will need to acquire Franklin through a trade." Then we trade Franklin for Whitfield. Undeniably wishful thinking but it's the only way I see us actually getting anything substantial for Franklin.

Are you talking about the "love" he's getting on this thread?

Or the "love" of a man for a great cigar?

;)

We'd be more likely to get Pick 10 for Franklin. Considering he could walk for nothing and leave us with pick 20, pick 10 is not bad.
