Will be a bit annoyed if we've gone through all of this shit for 6 months and 135 pages and all that needed to be done is add a year to the contract offer.

Also weird timing to decide to add an extra year to a 4 year contract offer in the week that said player misses a game with knee soreness likely stemming from a knee injury over 18 months ago...

5 years is a risk from our end. I understand the reluctance

Why would the club add another year if Franklin isn't discussing it ? Seems strange ?! Sounds like Pickering has been doing negotiations without Franklins input. Either Pickering is treating us all like idiots or HFC have just improved their own offer to get Franklin to commit. If Franklin wants to stay then getting a fifth year should make him sign immediately. If he still chooses to leave it til seasons end then I'm afraid the club has Franklins answer.....GONE

According to:

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2013-07-14/hawks-up-offer-to-buddy

"HAWTHORN has put an improved five-year offer to Lance Franklin that it is confident will convince the superstar forward to turn his back on free agency, Hawks president Andrew Newbold says."

and

"Newbold said Hawthorn list manager Graham Wright was speaking to Franklin's manager, Liam Pickering, about the spearhead's future every week."

Oh no doubt it is. Even 4 years is a big risk considering the amount of coin we're talking. But I guess they have to weigh up whether he's worth securing for the next 2-3 years while we're in a clear premiership window at the risk that he could break down at some point soon after. Personally I think he is all things considered (on and off field).

they gave a 5 yr contract to a player and got burnt not players fault his body did not sadly last that long so i understand fully why they don't like doing so regardless of player

I'm wondering if it's actually a straight 5 year offer though. Could be 4 year with a 5th year option given he plays X amount of games and/or kicks Y amount of goals over the 3rd and 4th years for example.
Even the original contract offer from the start of the year could've been 3 years with a 4th year option.

I'm not sure how I feel about the performance based contracts some players have. On one hand I can see the clubs point of view in that you don't want to be stuck paying a player a high amount of money 4-5 years on when they've suddenly lost their ability to play the game to their original high standards. And on the other I can see the players point of view that they are signing a contract that stipulates that they are worth X amount over Y years and in that comes the understanding that the club will be getting value in the earlier period of that contract and may have things balanced out by the end of it. I guess if there is a performance based component to Buddy's contract offer from the Hawks then they'll need to find a balance that both club and player are happy with.

5 years isa risk worth taking. Up forward we have so much verstaility with him and next 2-3 years we will be in a window. Then his contract will be 2-3 years in a semi rebuild. probably deserves being overpaid in his last two years as he has been underpaid as a player up until now. We will come out even at the very least with a 5 year deal, however still probably on top.

Oh and if we want to trade him in two years we will get more than pick 20.

OK I have been of the opinion that if Buddy left it would not be the end of the world, however I would prefer him to stay.

I have now changed my mind. I now sincerely hope Buddy goes. I hate to say it but Buddy's best is behind him. I see no reason why we should take the huge risk on a player whose output is getting lower and lower ever season. We have more then enough players to cover him and with the extra cash we can get another inside A grade midfielder we desperately want/need

Off field value. He brings in plenty more than what he's being paid. "The Franklin Effect" will ensure that our membership increases exponentially in the generations to come as every kid you see running around now with a brown and gold number 23 on his back has children then grand children themselves. We will be bearing fruit from Buddy for an incalculable amount of time into the future.

He will come back next week and kick a bagful and then your mind will be changed back. Clarko hasn't been playing Buddy where he is best. He is playing how he did in the '08 grand final. Sacrificing his game for the better of the team, whilst also bobbing up and kicking 3-4 goals.

" we accept pick 20 as that's the system and wont be whingeing about it"....
this is bullshit, we expect to be properly compensated if we lose a player to gws who have been given a higher salary cap, have outside AFL influence to get him to GWS and are funded and bankrolled by the AFL

It's not a question of whinging A Newbold its about obtaining a fair outcome for our football club given the circumstances outlined above....i believe Hawthorn should listen to thousands of its paid members and respect there wishes. This and his call for handing over an extra million salary cap to Melbourne is completely out of touch with the views of many of our paid members

Hopefully he stays and the indications last few weeks have been more positive

Shady the Sheikh is THE biggest b.....t artist you would ever meet. He thinks he is the smartest, best coach that ever was, and he has to appear every day in the media, either in the paper,on tv,on radio, he loves looking at himself. He is a PIG. A sly, arrogant prick, who thinks we can,t live without him in the media. Drop in the sinkhole Shady,,don't EVER reappear again, with your ugly dial..You see how much I like him:DI feel better now, you can't listen to his crappy rubbish,if you see him get out of that sinkhole, please push him down again..:p

While he does add value as the biggest drawcard in the game, we should be concentrating on improving and refreshing the team with a couple of young midfielders, not worrying about the additional marketing dollars he generates. A 5-yr contract is too big a risk for ANYONE who is 26 and with his best days behind him.

He is holding the club to ransom and I hope that they've told him that he has a 30-day window to accept or no dice, so we can all move on.

Over it.

sent a tweet out congratulating the hawks on their win. you would have to think he either wants to stay or get the very best for himself or hfc

It's his job, keeping GWS in the media, exactly what the AFL wants
Coaching is his second priority, media focus is his first
Deal with it!

not enough interest, apprx 120 signatures....i need thousands to be heard, but people have no faith in someone they don't know it seems, or there just interested in dribbling on internet forums for 137 pages rather than trying to act as one body...hopefully he signs and we dont get f**ked over.....as u can see Newbold will not seek fair compensation if he doesn't.

What's been said last few weeks has been much more positive re him staying so hopefully he does...if we got fair compo which is 3 picks in top 10 for what will be the highest paid player in history and the most marketable player in AFL (given the AFL fund gws, give them higher cap they have no free agents and also propose to pay for them outside the cap) then we could use 2 or even 3 of those picks to attract 2 good quick mids and a tall with the $1.1 mill left over if he were to leave (we could also free up a bit more money with a couple of trades/delistings)

In any case hopefully he'll stay and it makes a lot of sense to stay from his perspective too for a lot of reasons, aside from the football side his brand as a potential multiple flag player for a big club like hawthorn will be worth plenty of $ after career as well. If i were him i would stay and thats taking the emotion out of it.
