the average footy supporter has little to no idea of the various moving parts and possible permutations involved in a player trade - discuss....

Good call. Humble call. Right on the money call, Hutchy..... I mean Thy.

A lot of the time, I see posters saying something like 'Hey, we should have gone after Henry!' (as an example). But you know what, who knows that we didn't?

A player on the move would nominate a club based on
  • Salary offer
  • Years offered
  • Role / place in best 22
  • State / location of club
  • Where the club is on the 'premiership window'
  • What the club's vision is
  • Club culture
  • Off-field opportunities
  • Players / coaches they know at the new club
  • Salary cap room
  • Available picks / draft capital to make a deal happen
  • How high up the player is in the new club's priority list
  • And more...
You can't pick up every player available in trade week. We might only see 2-3 targets linked to us in public each trade period, but I am sure our list mgmt team has spoken to 5-10 times that many players throughout the year.

Once a player has nominated a club, the 'hey, we should get in his ear' is usually pointless. By that stage, a deal is probably already done in principle and if we were interested we would likely have already done our due diligence already.

For every player we 'miss', we probably weren't interested or we were in discussions but our overall offer (all the factors above) was trumped by someone else.

TL;DR - I reckon what we see in public is <10% of the wheeling and dealing the List Mgmt team would do behind closed doors

Not to mention, particularly interstate moves, partner opportunities, kids schooling, good bakeries....

Reading Cal Twomeys phantom form guide today makes me feel there’s nothing exciting going to be available past pick 15 or 20. Austin will know better but I do feel we have enough depth and we may have to sacrifice some depth and trade our first two picks plus the future first to get a best 22 player at pick 8. Personally would prefer that one potential gun at pick 8 versus 3 potentially handy depth players with the other 3 picks. Can always rookie or get supplemental picks to fill out the list later.

hear what you're saying but............shall I go through previous years drafts and pull out a few "nothing exciting past pick 15 or 20" players?

Zac Williams will slot back into the HBF, giving us run and skills out of the backline.

None of this mifdield, defensive fwd rubbish.

Thank you Nick.
Disappointed.
Thought he might be good as a ruck option.
Ah well.

Thank you Nick.

If Williams is definitely playing back, the i hope we look at Boyd as a forward option

I’d be surprised if we traded in to the top 10, the cost will be too high.

Trading up to get someone around 15 who Austin rated higher I can see being quite attainable

I won’t be as that’s what we are targeting.
The club seem to believe that we can get a player we really want in Top 10 and then it’s a bit of a lottery.
Where our list is we just want quality and can add depth through DFA, mature rookies etc
We have a young group of Binns Hollands Cowan Akuei 2xIrishman O’Keefe Carroll Lemmey
and that’s a lot for a side in the Premiership window

Jabba73 is dumbfounded by the lack of AFL players nominating to play for the Echuca Football Club...

Top 10 DFAs according to Fox

Brodie Mclaughlin? 25yo key forward. Leading VFL goalkicker this year. Squeezed out of GC list with King, Lukosious, Cashboult and incoming Walter. Could be cheap backup for Charlie/Harry?!? Although we do have TDK and JSOS further down the KPF pecking order. Most importantly passes the Frank Marchesani rule as he kicked 5.0 against Carlton VFL in round 23.

Hayden Crozier - we have been linked already. Cheap HBF backup, but would be battling against Boyd/Cowan if everybody fit. Plus they are basically backup already, stuck behind Doc, Saad, Newman, McGovern & Williams.

In the local paper today there is an article about Andrew Walkers son.

His younger brother goes alright too just quietly

Would 100% take McLaughlin

Hopefully they haven't abolished the father son rule by then...
Surely that'll never happen.

I can see the bidding/matching process is adjusted, discount reduced or even removed, but not abolished altogether.

One of the great aspects of our game is the family lineage from parent to child (across both AFL & AFLW).

No chance it's 10% the lm team would have a pretty good eye on every player in the league and their contract - the agents aren't doing their job otherwise
you missed the point there, brane.org - ferris was responding to my original post suggesting supporters on the whole have no idea as to the many moving parts involved in a trade..........the lms would need to be much more across it of course...........
