From the article:

On the Club’s draft strategy, holding picks Nos.22 and 28:

“The way we look at the draft, the pointy end is so exciting while outside the top 10-12, it’s pretty even. To get another pick and have two close together, we felt like that was right for us. We’re confident we’ll get some good players there.”

How do I read this:
  • "the pointy end is exciting" - does mean we're looking at trying to trade up?
  • "To get another pick and have two close together, we felt like that was right for us. We’re confident we’ll get some good players there.” - does this mean we're happy with our picks and will keep them?

My read is that whilst Austin would be happy to trade up if possible, most likely we'll be using the picks as is. If so, I know it's pick best available, but at that range bring me an x-factor HF, and then a developing KPD...

If we want Geelongs pick we are better off waiting till draft night. Their pick will likely be the last of the top group of players

If the guy left is one they like then the price of the pick will be out of reach. If it's not however, the price will be more reasonable.

A bit like us in 2019 when we got left with Flanders as the last guy in that top group. We didnt happen to rate him so moved on the pick for 17 and 22 which wasn't a ridiculous price.

Also, guarantees a guy we want is still there as there will be guys in that top group we don't want either.

Also shows the hazards of trading down

Wonder if we try and trade up
Maybe our future 1st involved
One thing we do know is that Geelong/Mackie will be wanting a king's ransom for pick 8.

I'd imagine if we're even in the ballpark, they'd be asking for 22, 28 AND our future 1st - possibly with a future 2nd getting thrown back at us.

I also reckon there's other clubs like Norf that would be in a better position to trade up - especially if Sanders is available at that pick on draft night.

Yep, that seems about right to me too. Keep our options open in case something presents, but otherwise fairly happy to just use our picks where they are now.

Live picks likely to be 27 and 30 - after factoring in bids and bid matching for Walter, Read, Rogers, Croft and McCabe.

Considering how even this draft seems to be after the first dozen or so picks, it's very hard to judge who we might have available to us there.

Koen Sanchez or Jack Delean seem like they'd be around the mark, and probably a good fit for our front half.
Zane Zakostelsky the only key defensive option in our range that I can see on most of the draft rankings.
Maybe Arie Schoenmaker slides?
Ashton Moir could be a bit of a Hail Mary if we get a safer option with our other pick. Boom or complete bust prospect.
If we want to do a bit of future-proofing of our midfield depth I also like the look of Cooper Simpson.

I would trade up for an exciting player with obvious potential such as say Lance Collard.
Don’t think Austin will risk much, he’s more a methodical approach.
Curly Jr has a solid approach, so we should snare a couple of reasonably talented lads, let’s keep present that luck plays a big part.
Go Blues

I’m open to anything Juddy but my feel is if we can get players in now the better. A pick 9 who is a gun will make a real difference in a year or two and we are in the window. Next year we will have Campo boys.

A top 10 pick now could be exactly what we need
Percentage/gut feel of us doing trading up in your opinion?

Can anyone give some insight into why Geelong are the team who are supposedly most likely to trade their first pick?
By their lofty standards, they were fairly inactive this trade period. There's a fair chance they're targeting some big names next year, so may be looking to trade out of this year and into next to gain some draft capital.

You would imagine that any negotiations from their end would have to include a future 1st rounder - which could actually work in our favour as we'd be one of the few clubs that are potentially using their 2024 1st rounder for points rather than a player - although the Cats would be also aware that it's not going to be a top end 1st round pick.

The thought of going to the draft this year having additional picks in the 20's, as well as an additional 1st round pick in 2024 to use as trade capital, may appeal to them though.

Sean Darcy in a matched trade = Dockers could have 5 x 2024 1st rounders…our F1 may come into GFC’s thinking.

3 picks in the 20s (if there is a player we like), as well as adding an early additional 2nd rounder for the Campo boys

Personally, unless it ticks our boxes, think we trade our 2024 1st next year for multiple picks/points

In regards to this.

Unless we do a Dogs trade next year and id say it would be harder for us to do it, as we hopefully have a higher pick, any trade we do next year for points, doesn’t get us an extra player, it just helps us pay for two coming in.

This doesn’t take in to account using the pick to bring in a player via trade and getting change.

Trading the F1 for a pick this year, or a second and a F2 actually gets us an extra player and helps us get points.

There is no risk in not having enough points, there will be a player or more who wants a trade out to help with points.
