I just looked up the stats (of free kicks) of every Grand Final between a Victorian and non-Victorian team since 2000 and this is what I got

2001
Brisbane - 22
Essendon - 19

2002
Collingwood - 24
Brisbane - 16

2003
Brisbane - 13
Collingwood - 18

2007
Geelong - 28
Port Adelaide - 25

2012
Sydney - 10
Hawthorn - 21

2013
Hawthorn - 14
Fremantle - 13

2014
Sydney - 18
Hawthorn - 18

2015
Hawthorn - 14
West Coast - 13

2016
Sydney - 8
Western Bulldogs - 20

So that is

Non-Victorian - 138 free kicks
Victorian - 162 free kicks

Or

Non-Victorian - 46% of free kicks
Victorian - 54% of free kicks

It also means of the 9 Grand Finals with Victorian and Non-Victorian teams playing since 2000, the Victorian team have won 7 of them (free kick wise), the non-Victorian team has won it once and there was one draw.

What are the reasons for this, and could this be a problem for Adelaide next week?

Not as big a difference as I thought it would be.Nothing to see here.

It was only the last year's GF that was bad. The rest have been pretty good imo. The net response from the AFL community was positive after last year's manipulation so they might try it again.

Also the basis of this analysis is extremely stupid. Free kick counts alone don't show how much of the umpiring performance was shit.

It would've been more effective to say that out of all these Vic vs Non Vic, never has the the non vic side won the FK count.

Usually the trend is that teams who play in front are those who are generally on the receiving end of the free kick differentials.

But there's always the question to raise with the Umpires boss and Gillon, why don't we have full time umpires?

I'm confident the umps will assist Richmond next week like they did tonight, but two key problems with this thread:

a) 54/46 isn't a big difference, especially over a relatively small sample size
b) free kick count isn't nearly everything when looking at umpiring, count often means jackshit.

Except the non-Victorian clubs won 4 of those 9 Grand Finals, but only won the free kick count once.

I don't personally know any afl umpires, the amount of bad calls they make through the year tends to be amplified during the finals when you've less teams participating and a lot more focus on the performance.

The umpiring is far from ideal at any point in time and the consistency goes begging at the best of times

No problem. Cats won the free kick count last night 23 to 17 despite being pantsed most of the night and getting done by 10 goals in the end.

The difference of 6 being Joel Selwood’s 6 free kicks. Richmond don’t have the equivalent.

Port lost the free kick count in 2004 and won.
Sydney lost the free kick count in 2005 and won.
Hawthorn lost the free kick count in 2008 and won.
Geelong lost the free kick count in 2009 and won.
St Kilda lost the free kick count in 2010 and drew.
Geelong lost the free kick count in 2011 and won.

Not Victorians fault non-Vic sides have to rely on the umpires to win flags against Vic sides.

Sydney don't get enough paid against them obviously

The only team given overt favouritism from the AFL in grand finals is Sydney. It eventually led Barry Hall to thinking he was untouchable & could do whatever he liked on the field
