I thought the dogs took them really lightly.

Free were on - I didn't see a huge deviation from what they've tried the previous two weeks - just a much better effort across the field.
My thoughts exactly. We didn't turn the ball over as badly compared to the 1st 2 weeks. Kicked 10.13.73 ve Geelong in round 1, then 13.11.89 vs the dogs in round 3. Goal wise hardly an outstanding improvement. The effort and determination to win was outstanding.

Funny thing Freo traded picks 11, 27 and 43 for Josh Carr in 2004. Looking back in the 2004 draft. Easily one of the weakest along with 2012.
I haven't looked into that exact trade but I agree people tend to over look the alternatives when writing off a trade. If you get a better outcome or the same outcome as the draft as you do a trade what is the issue?

Sometimes you are better off punting on a trade when the draft that year is putrid. The Hickey trade is a good example of that. Carlisle one is another good example.

we paid way over the odds for Josh Carr. Pick 11 should of been enough, Especially when he was out of contract that year. If he was still under contract, then maybe add pick 27. I was hoping we at least kept pick 43 to get someone in that draft.

What made it worse was 4 years later, Carr walked out of our club and we got nothing. Its one of the reasons why I dislike Port today. We traded pick 8 and Paul Medhurst for Chris Tarrant. Tarrant did 4 years with us too. The difference was that when he wanted out, Collingwood gave us something in return. Collingwood gave us 2 picks in the 40s, We gave them Tarrant and a pick in the 40s back. So essentially, we got a 3rd rounder for a 30 year old Tarrant.

i had forgotten how good tarrant was down back for your mob. got some good footy out of him

As I said, 2004 was a weak draft Guys like Angus Monfries and Lynden Dunn were picked in picks 14 and 15. The only WA guys that came decent after pick 20 was Nathan Van Berlo at 24 and Mark LeCra at 37. Again guys like Dean Polo was taken at pick 20, so yeah the quality and quantity was bad that year.

The Rookie List got some gems in Josh Gibson, Danyle Pearce who eventually played for us, Heath Grundy and Harry O brien/Labumbabumba

Its funny that no one liked your post. If Ross Lyon was a Poor coach, he would of never of got the saints or the dockers to a gran final. If Ross Lyon is a poor coach. I would love to know what you think of Mark Neeld when he coached the demons in 2012-13.

Again, Ross Lyon can walk out now and it would be a younger list than what we had in 2008. As for Lyon costing the Saints and Dockers a flag.... Saints kicked 9.14.68 in the 2009 Grand final. Had the Saints kicked 14.9.93, they would of won the Flag. Freo kicked 8.14.62 in the 2013 GF. Had th dockers kicked 14.8.92, freo wold of won by 15 points. Hawks kicked 11.15.81 in the 2012 GF. Had they kicked 15.11.101, they would of beaten the swans.

Yeah if he was a good coach, they might have been wins, he's just a coach and IMO he's been too negative. Having a side that is really super disciplined and strict in their methods is great until the opposition figure it out and are good enough to execute. It's not so great when things need to be adjusted. We'll get to figure out how good he is after rebuilding the dockers. He's just a coach IMO. Has proven he can help top up a side and get them a long way but when it comes to being flexible and playing a style of football that is attacking and not taxing on the players bodies, I'm not so sure.

Unlikely this is despite Hogan and Gawn not playing for your mob this weekend. Still... if it was in Subi then maybe. Plus we don't have the element of surprise we had vs the dogs.

I dont think any afl team would be caught by the element of surprise, especially the bulldogs whose previous loss was at the same ground against the same opponent. Teams prepare for the other teams best given the professionalism and the time spent on preparing.

Interesting to watch him at the quarter time address - he was very encouraging and positive with his players, but got very frustrated in the box during the next quarter. Looks like a coach who is trying to change and I give him credit for it.

Must hurt those Saints supporters watching their team go through a 5 year rebuild and still be average, then we rebuild for a year and are on level pegging (at the very least) with them.

You scraped home against a Melbourne team missing 3 of their most important players in Gawn, Hogan and Lewis, I wouldn't be gloating just yet.

If you beat us or finish ahead of us on the ladder at the end of the season then you might be able to gloat about being ahead of us in your rebuild.

Lyon is doing a great job with what he has to play with. They are rebuilding and turned a horrendous start of 0-2 to something respectable

very bitter not, all teams heaps of have players our. next page of the saints play list is to blame the umpires
Melbourne still had the No 1 draft picks in

Yeah I predicted them to fight for the lower reaches of the eight this year. Still, it's only one round so far. Would wait until at least Round 8 or so before starting to make conclusions about them.

Genius.

You'd think people on BigFooty would have learnt by now - never write off a team a couple of rounds into the year. But I guess farming for cheap likes is more important.

So I should just gloat now to save us all some time!

The fact that it is even up for debate is pretty funny given how long the Saints have had this rebuild going for.

Could you run that post through an English translator for me?

You've had 2 losses and 2 wins so far this season and you aren't in the top 8, it's a bit early to be claiming that Freo have undergone a successful rebuild.

We need to see how the season plays out before we can truly assess where both teams are at rebuild wise.
