Tomorrow's draft. Does anyone know what time it starts? I thought it was somewhere around 0800 hours. Fat chance, but is there any broadcast into WA?

It's all online. I don't know what time it starts but there likely be a link/update on the AFL website at some point.

So i have to come into work half an hour early? booooooooo

We'd better pick someone of quality or ill be pissed.. and tired

Max Four picks 2 PSD, 2 RD.

My prediction;
PSD Taberner
PSD Pass

RD Howson
RD Chricton (though would prefer Reimers or other)

If we pass on one of the Pre-Season draft picks we have to take three rookies and have 5 on the rookie list + Moller outside.

Thought Rookie spots were capped at four this year + Category 2 (Moller). Nothing I thought against us going into to the season with 1 less (i.e. 39 total) on the list as long as TPP are above minimum. Think Sydney will be doing this - they have three PSD picks but expected to only use 1 (Tippett), maybe 2 at most.

Collingwood recruiting manager Derek Hine explains it like this on the Pies' website:

"In the past there’s been 38 players plus your six rookies, where now you can have 38 players and six rookies, 39 players and five rookies and 40 players and four rookies. The numbers are similar but there are different ways that you can manipulate it.

"For the first time, clubs aren’t mandated to take a selection, so they can choose to have their full quota of rookies, whatever that may be, or they can just choose to have none on the rookie list.

We're still going to want the full 44 players. I really don't see the point in not using both pre-season picks. If we don't we will just be going down in the draft order in the chance that Menegola is best 22 next year.

PSD:1 - Taberner
PSD:2 - Some leftfield random from SA/Vic

RD:1 - Rodda
RD:2 - Kry(me a river WCE supporters)town

Nah, you can have 38 on senior list and no rookies if you wanted to.

Are you sure about that? I would've though that you would have to have 44 on your senior list if you have no rookies. That would make it very hard to pay the minimum salary cap. Regardless, that would be stupid and no club would do that. So why bother bringing it up?

40 is the max for the senior list. Rookies are on minimum wages only half of which goes in the cap so they don't really have much effect on the salary cap. I brought it up to show that clubs have a range of options and don't "have to" take a certain amount.

You didn't understand what I said but it doesn't matter. Clubs aren't going to sacrifice the chance to develop a good player by having 6 less players in their squad than other teams. Not to mention the possibility of injuries. Maybe they don't technically "have to" but if they want to be competitive they do "have to".

I understood you well, try not to be so patronising. You are making a massive assumption which is very wrong. GWS, Gold Coast, Sydney, St.Kilda, Richmond, Adelaide and Port Adelaide all went into this season with less than their maximum number of "category A rookies"(they weren't called that then). By your logic every club should be taking 3 category B rookies to maximise their list.
Personally, I can see both sides of the argument. There's not much harm if a rookie player fails, however what is the point in picking a player you really do not want just so you can say you have a full list?

No you didn't. My point was that with only 38 players on your list it makes it harder to pay the minimum salary cap and may also mean that they are being paid more than they are worth. Look at your own club who has had a lot of extra NSW scholarship players just for the chance that one may turn good all the while knowing that the chance is slim.

I'm baffled that you can argue the merits of one club having 38 players on their list compared to another with 44. It's a competitive industry. Do you honestly think any club is going to have 38 players in their squad next year instead of 44 and actually be better off for it?
