Review Freo Smalls 2 Fast, 2 Furious - Freo Win by 35 Against Carlton

I’ll take reading and listening to comparisons to Melbourne all day long.
Are we forgetting the vitriol and memes and laughing stock we were and in so many eyes still are?

The path forwards from here is going to be rocky. It’s going to test your resolve. You’ll question your faith.

An unexpected loss or poor performance or run of injuries or Covid will open old wounds BUT to reach the summit you got to take some steps.

We’ve only just gotten off the couch, but we have gotten off the couch.

Embrace the hype.
Mark Duffield is that u?

I don't like the comparisons to Melbourne in the media, getting well ahead of ourselves, still no certainly to even play finals let's alone go deep.
What were your expectations at the start of the year? We are too young to go deep IMO but my expectations were pushing the 8 with an extra win or two and better percentage the main aim. We have a percentage over 140 and we are 5-1, it's time to let down the barriers and embrace the fact we are a good football team. We are playing finals.

Melbourne are playing incredible football but our style is like theirs while two years away from being as consistent, say it with me Noise, we are a good football team.

I am worried about Kane Cornes comments when he was praising our forward pressure about the current rules.and the guarding of zones etc saying port , dockers hawks and suns took advantage of that rule against carlton and he hate cartom losing because of those zoning rules .We did our rebuild and sorted a gameplan based on the relevant rules and if afl change again back.to old ,based on frequent criticisms from these commentators I will be very sad.

Good coaches and teams will figure out ways through the zoning and how to break it down. Good coaches will also evolve with the game. Can’t just stick with a game plan for years and expect the game never to evolve. The West Coast Eagles are discovering this to some extent also Richmond. Player personnel is a factor for both but so are their game plans that teams are breaking down.

It was interesting Luke Darcy said post match he spoke to some GWS players this week.

And because they played freo and Melbourne in B2B.

Some GWS players told him freo were so impressive and that they felt there wasn't much between us and Melbourne. Apprantley when it comes to covering the ground and space Freo were just as good as Melbourne and the speed that Freo now possess caught them off guard and is a weapon.

We have a lot of fast boys out there with genuine pace, especially in the front half:
Noddy
Walker
Freddy
Schultz
Acres
Switta
Travis

Thats the one difference to our 2012-15 squad outside of S Hill we didn't have the outside speed that could break teams away.

We relied on our big bodies of Mundy, Fyfe, Barlow, Sandi dominating at stoppages with Crowley, De boer and Mzungu who were also hard mature bodies holding down the other teams strengths.

Can I just give a shoutout to the real heroes today, the Gold Coast Suns, who gave us pick 2 for Lachie Weller (used on Brayshaw) and also gave us Will Brodie for nothing. Top blokes.

Love this.

We pay Will Brodie the equivalent of $ 10.00 to play for us, and Carlton pay the chap in number 5, $ 600 000 +, to scavenge around the backline.

Thanks to Gold Coast, obviously they don’t like hard workers, too used to handouts.

Mitch Crowden needs to change his name to Flarcy Trucker…try and get some opportunities.

shake my head this guy continues to get gifted games and Crowden doesn’t.

14 possessions…..5 turnovers. Momentum killer and slow as a wet week.
cannot make a decision with the ball and when he does he turns it over

Had a mooch on the Carlton board, fair bit of rationalising going on. Some fair points (loss of Pittonet early and missing Silvagni) but ignore their vaunted forward line got 10 touches. I particularly loved this corker (paraphrasing)

"We [Carlton] had the wrong mix of personnel against a Freo side who were only missing Fyfe, Young and Chapman..."

**** me, those three walk into any side in the comp currently.

Super impressed by our handballs in close. We were so good at 2 or 3 hand balls and finding the free man.

Darcy needs to work on boundary contests. If he gets behind he pushes in the back too much.otherwise was good just needs to tidy up this area.

Forward entries still poor, especially early. Not sure if longmuir had a work because improved after the first.

Cox so good. Handy 1 on 1, brilliant with the ball or providing an option for the person with it.

Brayshaw always running. His defensive work is elite. Our entire team defence is elite as well. Schultz, Switta,Colyer were all elite

Great to see Walters kicking straight. Was not close to missing.

Silvangi isn’t a great player and won’t get a game in half of competition teams.

Total denial.

The Blues should be in front of us as their median age is greater and better players are in 24-29 age group.

Plus they started their rebuild earlier.

What was that song they were playing at the start of the 4th quarter bounce ?
Sounded amazing

Whoever does our sound production has got fantastic taste

I mean what other teams have got a guitarist up in the air blazing on the axe .
Genius
In case no one answered... The song is Purple Hat by Sofi Tukker.

I agree, the music this year has been massively improved!

Silvagni is a handy player these days, good third tall option that also pressures and Pittonet is obviously very important to their gameplan given how much they rely on clearances to score. They are perfectly reasonable things to draw back on, we were still clearly the better team though and they wouldn’t have been the difference makers. Imagine if Cripps hadn’t gotten up though, would have been a bloodbath. Dude is terrifying again

Accidental?
Yeah he was just a drunk idiot missing a step and leaving me with a wet set of clothes for the game. I have to put in great effort to make these budding things pop enough to be noticed.

Yep, now we have the spread and the forward pressure. There was a sequence last night in our forward 50 where Carlton was trying to get the ball out but our small forwards kept coming in waves to apply the pressure and I thought, there’s a bloke with toe, there’s another one, and and there’s another one. We can really apply a siege mentality to harass their backs to force errors. It’s a great shock-and-awe element of our game.

I pretty much got the same excuses from my Carlton mate. I reminded him that we havent played them at full strength in years and that we weren't at full strength again last night.

Apparently we were lucky....ahh no we weren't lucky. Carlton got half their goals from umpiring decisions and when they didnt get the calls the ball lived in our forward 50 because their transition game isn't good.

He didnt know who Young and Chapman were and forgot Fyfe existed. Blamed the loss on Pittonet going down and Kennedy and Silvangi not playing. If they had a full strength team it would've been different apparently.... No one cares. No one cared when we had injury woes. No one cared that we had to travel 3 times in one week to play a home game at the MCG. Guess what...no ones that your players got injured . No one cares. We won...that's all that matters. AFL is an endurance test and injuries happen. No sympathy from me.

Side note: And now after calling Cripps a flog all game my kids have a new word to use....just heard my 6 year old call my 4 year old a flog....yeah ill be hearing about that all weeeeeeeek.

We let cripps do what he wanted, poor old mundy was on him a couple times in their forward line.

Yeah, last night you could really see how Mundy is becoming a liability when the opposition has the ball. Still amazing with ball in hand and when it's contested but otherwise after last night I was worried that it might be Mundys last year 🙁

We let Mundy and Walsh do what they wanted and Carlton's mids got their hands on it plenty. Didn't achieve much but they sure worked hard.

Darcy Tucker needs the ball to get to him slightly faster or be slightly faster to get to the ball. He seems a fraction off the pace all the time.

The exact opposite of Sam Switkowski who could move through traffic like it's stopped

I think Mundy has been like that for 2-3 years. Without being at the ground Duff has pointed it out on his podcast in the past couple of years when discussing mundy's contract just because he is still racking up the numbers defensively he just cant cover the ground like he used too. And others in the midfield have to compensate.

And when fyfe is there with him it can lead to massive leakage defensively when 2 midfielders cant cover defensively.

Its why our midfield looked better at times when fyfe was missing last year.

And the need to probably plank him in the forward line when he returns. Fyfe can still play midfield but what its showing atm is we no longer rely on him.

What a great win. For the 1st time in ages it actually looked like our players were better in every contest.
I said last week that Lobb looked like having a meaningful game soo and he did really well. His challenge as always will be backing it up. If he can do that next week again next week we will be a real chance.
No absolute standards, we probably had 3 or 4 with claims to BOG.
Really pleasing complete effort from all on the ground.
Let's do it again next weekend.
