Review Game days suck - Carlton prevail

The older guys deserved to have a full crack at it. We gave them that. But it's time to recognise where we're at and carefully expose the talented younger players we have.

Conway comes in to ruck. Either Neale for Hawkins or SDK forward and O'Sullivan in. Then at least one of Humphries and Knevitt. Clark plays every week.

It's not throwing out all the older players but blending a few more kids in consistently.

I can’t believe some posters are attacking Clark like he’s the main worry for the side

FMD he’s 19 seriously
He's not the main worry, but I think people are annoyed / worried that he's being hailed as the second coming as Joel Selwood whilst honestly not showing much. People also feel like surely some blokes in the 2s could offer a bit more.

He also looks incredibly small out there which is worrying even though he is young.

I'm certainly not confident he will be a star and he doesn't seem to have many tricks/size or skill... but I'll give him credit for digging in and finishing on 20 touches from minimal game time.

I'm happy pumping games into him to fast-track whatever he will become now that I'm convinced we can't win it this year.

The "We don't care, we've got flags in the bag" logic don't impress me much. You are only as good as your last win and losing game after game sucks. Being smashed sucks more. Having to play veterans who are past their use by date sucks as well. At least now we can stop papering over the cracks and stop kidding ourselves. Of course Chris Scott will continue to say our best is good enough. 😗
Codswallop. Do you actually expect to be the best year in, year out? Being smashed sucks but winning flags matters.

That was expected
We have been trash for 7 weeks including our win over the tigers.
Just when we get danger back he’s gonna be out next week

The way it’s looking we might give up a nice top 10 pick for Smith and keep one good one if Stengle leaves

If I don’t see a debutant or someone like O’Sullivan next weekend I’ll be disappointed

Miers, Sdek JHenry all good tonight
Rest can go in the bin
I thought Henry was still poor

Worst we’ve played since the 2021 Prelim against Melbourne.

An embarrassing amount of missed kicks and fumbles.

Outclassed from the first bounce.

Issues in the midfield are obvious and there aren’t any easy solutions.

That said, Holmes is still a shining light in there and Dangerfield had good moments.

On the outside Dempsey and Miers got a lot of it, sometimes using it brilliantly, other times not so well.

SDK was solidly beaten by his brother but got better as the game wore on. Was good to see him clunk some marks. I Wouldn’t rule out the full time ruck move entirely, especially as a semi-Blicavs replacement.

Next week I’d like to see some changes to the squad, hopefully a 2nd game for Clohesy and a Humphries debut.

Reward some VFL lads.

Won’t play finals, currently a bottom 2 team and have consistently performed like one for over 2 months, major issues everywhere.
We might sneak into the 8 but we will be eliminated in the first week. Still better to get there than not. Too late for tanking, those early wins in the bank stuffed that up.

Really? He’s far from the worrying thing I saw tonight got in and under and tried his guts out despite being undersized

Give me a spell it’s just posters taking potshot at a promising kid that was never hailed as the next Selwood …posters are allowed to be excited over the promising kids they weren’t the issues tonight

Going to have a big salty rant …

But first, credit to Carlton - very talented team playing to potential. Finals level pressure throughout.

Awful, awful performance. No disgrace to lose to Blues with our midfield gaps but the farcically bad decision making, inept passing and weak, ineffectual tackling was disgraceful. No excuse for that. Don’t usually bag young players but Clark, Bowes were prime offenders but nearly all our young cohort were bad, particularly with tackles and by foot. Can’t believe the number of times we passed to the sole Carlton player surrounded by Cats). Cats also slipped and fumbled a lot particularly last qtr.

Struggling to find positives …
  • SDK got better in ruck and around the ground as the game went on.
  • Cameron good although we lose an option up forward with him upfield.
  • Danger having reasonable game back and no apparent issues with hammy.
Going to interesting to see how MC reacts for next game.

Holmes was fantastic, clark really impressed me (that will polarise some but hes growing this year), dempsey is class and miers and cameron were improved. Atkins tried hard.

I thought our rucks were terrible-i know sdk had a bit of the ball but he got manhandled by part time rucks and his decision making is off. Need to try him forward or in the vfl. Jack henry off too. Blicavs looks to have really lost a yard. We have some tough calls to make on our talls.

I think we will still make finals with our draw but we arent contending.

Hawkins looks done and while neale isnt convincing me its time to let hawkins go out with grace and that might be his last game.
Duncan still did his usual classy things but it was obvious to me how many times he chose to go to ground and lock the ball in rather than let it out.
He knows that he doesnt have the pace anymore and this is his last year.
Tuohy too has lost a yard and is done as is stanley.
Rohan is very borderline.
Dangerfield was ok but our midfield needs massive renovation.
We have some of the cattle in the 2s but we need to play them (mannagh and knevitt in particular) and we need to make tough calls.
Guys like mullin and oconnor and rohan etc could all go but you dont want 10 changes at once.

But conway must play for the rest of the year.
Hawk is done-you try neale or you structure up smaller.
We have to bring in more mids until tanner is back.
Mullin is due a spell in the vfl.
Blitz is due a rest and id use neale to help in the ruck.
Mannagh simply must play and i think knevitt and humphries should get a run too.
Sdk needs to be moved somewhere or out maybe its time to try jeka or osullivan.
That game shows me why i wouldnt pay stengle huge $-id like to keep him but we have a lot of other more important list priorities than a small fwd.

You liked SDK's game?

Ok.

I thought he was scared and ineffectual.

Makes you wonder if it's finally the end of an era with this team. Time to blood the young blokes playing well in the VFL and look to the future. They made us look like a bottom 4 team out there tonight. Carlton is the real deal and could win the flag this year.
Era ended when Selwood retired.

I obviously can't comment for all, but I get the feeling that he was seen as the Selwood replacement with some expecting that would include what Selwood was like in his first couple of seasons when developing

The biggest difference I see between the 2 situations is that Selwood walked into a midfield rotation that included Ablett, Bartel, Corey & Kelly all coming into their peaks

Clark has walked into a midfield rotation that includes, Dangerfield in the latter stages of his career, Bruhn who's starting his career in the hoops & as a member of the midfield rotation himself, Holmes who's establishing himself as a player, plus Atkins, Blicavs who are the support roles. And don't forget, if all was going well then C. Guthrie would be part of that rotation, but we've barely seen him since 22

It's a very different situation the kid finds himself in as it's a midfield group that's in transition itself - he'll grow into his role and over time will find his spot, but not sure we should be expecting the finished product at 19
