The VFL today. A disappointing loss by Geelong to a team much lower on the ladder.
Knevitt good but one paced, gets caught in tackles
Conway ok.
Neale ok but he is a terrible set shot
Clohesy a solid game
Hardie below his usual output
Mannagh 2 goals, not much else
Humphries below par
George Stevens a poor game, very slow
Stanley terrible

On today's form you wouldn't be elevating anyone. It's disappointing when you consider some midfield opportunities might be available.

Neale, for mine, is a beautiful set shot, though his inexperience adapting to conditions (ie wind) showed today.

But he's young, so you forgive that.

I thought he was ok overall.

I reckon Knevitt is good to go, I'd play Conway and I'd definitely give Mannagh a game.

A reasonable summary but you have taken glass half EMPTY (EDIT) on most of the things IMO (understandable given disappointing loss).

Knevitt did get caught holding the ball 3 times but 2 of them I think he showed composure to not panic as he had no option. Better to risk getting caught and hold it up. I agree that he is consistent runner and not pure pace - his role will be to keep presenting at contests and I thought he did that well. Used his height well. Personally I would have him on the wing instead of 2E in a heartbeat…

Neale actually is a good kick for goal. Just wasnt today. He should play

Conway they could make the call to give him more time in VFL to dominate if they genuinely want to keep SDK involved. More about SDK than Toby - Toby plays if they want a ruckman

Agree Mannagh “not much else” until the last qtr where he showed a lot (including the goals). Shame he took a while to warm up (as did most of the team) but I wouldn’t be shocked to see him play AFL soon. He is capable

The “half glass empty” one I will agree with is Humprhies - probably because I had such high hopes given it looks like there is a spot open with Mullin subbed…not sure he took it this week (but he has in others!)

A fair bit of negativity re Clark in the gameday thread, but I thought it was promising. Turned it over a lot, but he’s had a few ineffectual games in the past without many touches and used it quite well - he needs to learn to accumulate and that will necessarily mean some sloppy disposal as he improves. 20 touches - his first game above 16 - and against a strong midfield, games where our older mids have failed to fire this year.

Thought SDK was very decent and I don’t agree at all that a player must have had a bad game if they were beaten by a good player. I don’t like mucking around with talls’ positions though - hope they decide fast if we persevere in the ruck or backline.
I agree. Plenty to like about Clark. 19 year makes a few blunders in a high pressure game. Shock horror. We should be thankful that a 19 year is getting enough if the ball for us to notice his errors.

Re: SDK, in hindsight part of me thinks that the MC has decided to play for next year. See if he can develop as a passable ruck and second option to Conway. It is the only way our team selection on Friday makes sense.

The more I think about it, the more I am ok with it. We are not winning anything this year, and if SDK is a decent ruck it solves a huge issue for us going forward. Let’s see what we have got.

On the vfl game i would be bringing in conway neale mannagh and knevitt for tuohy hawkins mullin and rohan or oconnor (obviously one can stay if danger is suspended) but i doubt we do that.
I agree. We need to change the way we are playing and to freshen up the team, otherwise we will do the same as we did in the second half of last season, that is keep on playing the same hoping that things will change. Last year was different as we had terrible injuries, but it is not an excuse this season.

Apparently Scott has said that they won't keep doing the same thing, and there'll be changes.

Only thing I didn't like was he finished that sentence by saying the changes are looming 'on the horizon'........

I agree with that.
If we are to salvage this season change in personnel and game execution is needed.

Im hoping he means now and not just at the end of the year.

Neale has got a lot and lot of upside. I reckon we are on a winner with him

Either is dekonning in ruck. His ruck performance wasnt just bad. It was embarrassing.

Comparing teams ignoring currency (how they are playing now) is not helpful. I prefer to look at how Geelong is playing now. We have beaten one team in the last 6 weeks.
Exactly, this is what matters.

Comparing our form to other team’s current form does nothing except create excuses.

Except we didn't just lose. We were spanked. Let's face it, we were never in that Sydney game and lost by 6 goals, and we were smashed by Carlton. The reality is we are not competitive and we wouldn't go into any game now expecting a win, even against bottom 4 teams.
There is a wide gulf between getting spanked by a clear premiership contender and being a bottom 4 team

"We're so optimistic about the player he can be. In my mind, he's been one of the really high-level players in the competition. But like us, he's just not there at the moment.

"Getting him up around the ball a bit more might get him a spark that he and we needed. This is an aggressive move, and not one without risk.

"I think when we look back on [the game], I don't think we'll be thinking it was the fact we didn't have our tall defenders back there (in defence) that cost us the game.

"Sam is a developing player and one we're going to invest in. We will make no apologies for prioritising him."

Scott denied the timing of the selection manoeuvre was "coincidental" given De Koning would be matched up with his brother, who has been one of the form players of the competition over the past month.

The Cats boss admitted he knew Sam would have an uphill battle given his brother's full-time role as a ruckman, but expressed he was "pleased" with some glimpses the defender had in the middle of the ground.

"I'm not a huge believer in that stuff. I'm not denying there's some good theatre to it. I think what's more relevant is you've got a guy who's a few years older and played a lot more in the ruck. A neutral observer would think [Tom] is better placed to win that position than the guy that hasn't played much in the ruck.

"Again, it's an investment in the future for us and an investment in Sam as well. We need to get him up and going, playing his best footy. We thought [the move] was the best thing to help with that.

I'm very much hoping he stays, but if Stengle is going to leave, how is it likely that plays out? Does it sometimes get announced during the season and then the player plays out the season with us and switches to them when the year is done? Or are there other scenarios?
The only time I can remember a player announcing they are leaving during the season was (funnily enough) Lachie Henderson when he came to us.

Normally they just play the season out ‘putting off contract talks’ and then leave at the end of the year.

In other sports I gather it’s more accepted to announce where you are going to the play the following year & it’s normal to keep playing with your current team.

Rugby league is the only other sport I can think of where you can sign with another team for next year before your current contract expires.

In most sports it is forbidden (under anti-tampering rules) for a player to negotiate with another club whilst under contract. It should be forbidden, it gets into a very murky integrity territory when you are potentially playing against a team you have signed a contract for and expected to give 100%.

In soccer for example if you are loaned to another team (this happens all the time) you are not allowed to play if the team you are loaned to plays against your parent club. It avoids all sorts of questions about potential conflicts.

Bollocks.

You can’t analyze a teams performance without comparing it to the competition as a whole. Geelong is not the lead in the AFL movie.

It’s also especially relevant when people are saying we’re a bottom 4 side, there’s a reason we’re still in the 8 after winning 1 game in 6 weeks, the competition is all flaky.

Melb we should have won we just kicked badly at goal and gws are a decent team.

But port are terrible that loss was crap.

Yet Port poleaxed Essendon early in the year by 11 goals and now take the honor(off us) this weekend for the biggest flogging. And Ess fell in against STK. The drinking water must be off in Adelaide, but there have been some crazy results this year.

When the ladder is so close with one game (roughly) between us hanging in at seven down to Dawks at thirteen, you have to think anything can happen. Doomsday not here yet, if we can get our mojo back. We'll tumble if we lose this week, but I think we'll turn it around.

August 2011, Phil Davis announced he'd be joining GWS as their first signing from another club - he was sidelined at the time though, so not sure how much that played into the timing of the announcement:

Defender Phil Davis says money wasn't the sole reason for walking out on Adelaide to join new AFL entity Greater Western Sydney.

The 20-year-old key defender has become the first player to join GWS from an existing AFL club, leaving the Crows after just 18 games.

Davis refused to detail the length of his contract or the money involved.

"I am not going to lie, money is a factor," Davis told reporters on Tuesday.

Nah, discussing how Freo won and then lost, how badly North are going or how far ahead Sydney are, does not influence our form one bit.

If you want to use these discussions against someone saying we are a bottom 4 team then just like I said, you’re using it to create an excuse.

Nah, tell that to media buffs, footy tipsters, betting agencies and learned people who watch every game.
We summarise our chances here by how the oppo is going, as well as ourselves.
Can't buck the system.

lol those are just opinions the same as anyone else’s.

Well I’m not for hoping to scrape a few wins and maybe ‘chance’ a shot at finals just to be embarrassingly slaughtered week 1.

I’m a realist and atm we are really playing shit, no matter how good or bad any other club is traveling.

If you want to play finals this year that way then enjoy it but I’ll be more interested in focusing on the years after, once we get rid of the deadwood and start an earnest rebuild.

We can’t even run out games now so how far off the pace do you think we’ll be by September, even with a few flukey results going our way?
