Its why Wells get the credit , sure our system is good but at the primary stage, you have one chance to make a 10 year desicion. A bad day for a coach can be fixed , a bad draft will be costly.

Garlett the player, be interested see reviews on the D&T board. But Id say he has a bit Varcoe crossed with Riolli . Perhaps Kerrish A strong looking body would/could dynamic and probably play the Geelong brand a little better than TV does. But so much down side if it goes wrong. Over to you Mr Wells

Edit:

17. West Coast - Dayle Garlett (180cm midfielder - Swan Districts)

Dayle Garlett is the player I'll be watching with the most interest on draft day. He could easily go either way when it comes down to the picks - on talent alone he is a top 10 pick, no doubt at all. He has had a few off field problems this year, what with being left out of squads and missing games. But that doesn't really worry me all that much, I'd be willing to take him early. Although I have decided to go conservatively here. Because really, an 18 year old not being a complete professional is hardly earth shattering stuff. Plus he isn't oblivious to the fact that he needs to mature. On the field though, he is nothing short of amazing. Excellent speed, agility and evasiveness. He can run rings around even the quickest of opponents. In the midfield he can win his own ball, he is a smart player around the stoppages. And up forward, he has an excellent feel for where the goals are and just finds a way to get a shot off. He'd be one of the most damaging players in the draft, and that means more than a kid showing a lack of discipline. AFL Comparison: Lewis Jetta.

This prompted me to check out his clip. Must say very impressed even though he doesnt look like he gets out of first gear. Nice skills didnt waste a touch. Could easily see him in the hoops.

Looks classy in tight situations reminds me of Sam Mitchell in that reel.

Reading between the lines he has off field issues and wants out of WA. This combination suggests to me he wants out of WA to escape his off field problems and have a real dip at having a great AFL career.

Just speculation but I think it has merit he would a good pickup IMO.

Jake Stringer is an interesting case. Star midfielder cut down by a broken leg came back and played well up forward this year but seems to have lost something during his layoff. 191 cm and 94 kg already must have spent most of his time on the sidelines in the gym but with that body size you would think he is a ready made AFL prospect.

I really think Sully would be a great pickup. Already has a mature body - what do we do now that Scarlett's gone if Lonergan goes down? Even if we do end up with Rivers we are still light on for KPD if Gillies goes.

Yep, 196cm and at 95kg and only 20 years old, he is Cam Mooney proportions.

I really cannot remember too much about him, as I tend to concentrate on the performance of the AFL/Rookie listed players when I watch the VFL games.

I have a nasty feeling that Stokes will be blocking some up-and-coming talents next year, but I couldn't condone moving him on.
Best case scenario for me is that he has to be in top form to hold his place.

I think that's a key feature of our succession planning. I agree with your comments around Stokes and would add Joel Corey to that list as well for 2013.

would have thought we have enough players of Garlett's type.
I can't even see Stokes holding his spot next year with Motlop, Smedts, Murdoch and McCarthy likely to be pushing for senior selection.

Burbury is another who'd look to be getting games as well
we seem to say that every year, and yet ....

and don't forget that TV will be back as well.

I know its a highlight reel but Garlett looked very good....is he ok off both sides? Made me think a little of Ronnie Burns at times....

Stringer seems to have big wraps...but the badly broken leg wont help, particularly as I read his gait looks a little askew since his return.
Honestly..a KPD would be nice....

David , I have to pull you up here. Really both sides.. Ronnie Burns ? :)

LOL...thats why I asked the question. Look at the video....he naturally moves to his left side every time...hence the Burns idea...even his kicking style looked similar.

Edit: He did one short kick on his right to deliver lace out. Did Ronnie ever manage that?

Ronnie would run himself into the crowd just to get on that left foot.

Made going to the footy fun though..our rockin Ronnie.
Had a few drinks with him a couple of years ago...funny bloke..
Told him " I saw you handball "" once !!! He laughed and said must have been in the middle of the ground otherwise I would have has a shot on goal..

Thanks Mrs Simpson :D ( welcome to the board....want to expand on him a little? )

I like Wright & Broomhead but they are later type selections (well Broomhead is more a 2nd/3rd rounder, Wright might not make it to our 2nd pick).

For our first pick, I think Vlastuin would be right in the mix and would be a very solid selection. A couple of others that may well be around when it is our turn at the annual meat market...

Ben Kennedy - quick outside mid with a pretty penetrating left hoof. On the small side but can play and might be what the Cats want in order to complement the addition of Caddy.

Jesse Lonergan - solid inside mid who could probably play next year right off the bat. Real grunt but posted some very useful numbers at the combine. The more I think about him the more I'm coming around to him.

Jesse Lonergan...hadn't heard much of him....got any more on him?

David , I've been on his bandwagon since the champs. Was hoping that he would be there for R2 but the results at DC now means its unlikely. We haven't had a lot of luck with Tas player but this kid looks to have a real good inside game. Really like the way he can move in heavy traffic , Id say that the Kelly comparison

Chris25 does such good analysis I'll let him describe him:

25. Gold Coast - Jesse Lonergan (183cm midfielder - Launceston)

Lonergan is one of the better Tasmanians to come through the draft in some time. He would have been the first picked Taswegian last year even as an underaged player. And although injuries have interrupted his season so far, he got back for the end of the U18 Chamionships and performed well. At this stage, Jesse is very much an inside player who thrives on the contested ball and does well in the clearances. But I get the feeling that if he were given an opportunity, he could easily play on the outside too as he has the speed, endurance and just general athleticism required. But he is just too good as an inside midfielder, so he hasn't really had the chance to show what he can do. In terms of draft position, he could go anywhere from 15-30 and outside of the top 10, Lonergan would be the next best 'genuine midfielder'. So don't be surprised if he is somewhat of a 'bolter'. AFL Comparison: James Kelly.

Thanks Turbo! :thumbsu: Chris sure has done a lot of work.

My mate from Morningside mentioned a kid called Matthew Dick....said he was a player....not a Queenslander though. Not sure where he hails from.

Doesnt appear at all on Chris's list...so maybe he got it wrong.

Vlastuin sounds like a player too...got a feeling now that Menzel wont get to us...

boy...Wells earns his money...along with his team. Tough job sorting it all out!
