Good story on Triple M about the day in 1986 when an apparently injured Gary Ablett Snr rocked up late to a game and told John Devine he wanted to play, so poor old Craig Evans, who had 3 busloads of his friends and family from the country there to watch him, got the chop at the last minute. They had Evans and Michael Turner on.

The irony of a double header ..on Anzac day... that did not involve either Collingwood or Ess..

We really were a mess..if you think about it... how could anyone just turn up and get a game like its local league or something. Listening to the audio ..its obvious what Turner thought of the decision.

I've heard the story before ... but, it was Gary Ablett. Of course you play him, it was the 80s

I heard Turner reference it before but not that much detail.. Gees Turner is ray of sunshine.. one could put him and MScarlett in the same dressing room ..what a barrell of monkeys that would be

Yep the double header was a thing they toyed with in 1986. The other one we were involved in we played Melbourne from memory. Lost that one too.

Think that North game was Ablett’s first game of the season.

True. But it’s not like Geelong was the only club run badly then. There were 11 others.

Would be interesting to hear the GFC history in the context of the Catholic connection. Always remember a particular Geelong "scout" going to a local Barwon V St Josephs U/18 match. Barwon were the top team but the scout informed me they were their to watch a few of the young Joeys. This history goes back to Reg Hickey times where young Geelong footballers in his eyes were not up to it. Also interesting how many Catholic Captains of Geelong Football Club. Maybe it's all a myth but an analysis would make for an interesting study.

Haha, incredible audio. The way we are playing at the moment, we should crack that old song out! I’ve been searching for years to find the old “cat magic” temporary theme song from the mid 90s. I think it replaced cat attack for a season in about 95. If anybody could track that down it would be amazing! I do believe it wasn’t very well received if my memory serves me correct!
