Geelong - have to trade.

The Crows would love a look at Varcoe.

with two of our highest paid players on half price in scarlett and ottens now on the veterans list, their wont be any issues, and from what i have heard it is only selwood they need to sign up, the rest have all had their contracts dealt with, and he is as loyal a geelong boy as anyone you could meet, if selwood leaves, i will shave myself down below, place an ice block over my member for 2 hours, and then streak down chappel street naked at 1am, no chance in this world he would leave geelong.

Ottens joined the Cats for seson 2005 so will not be eligible for the Geelong Veteran's List until well into the next decade.

In terms of trades i think they will be looking at players outside of the best 22 who have had a few years in the system but will struggle to break into the line up in the next 2 - 3 years.

Gamble, Djerrkurka come to mind. Not sure Tenace and Lonergan have any trade value.

Suspect a player like Hogan who is on the cusp of the best 22 would be a required player.

Some other players mentiond in this thread, ie Wojinski are possibly too old - 29 in Wojinski's case - to attract much attention

Youd suspect Harley and Milburn to retire, than Mooney next season. These guys would probably be offered some sort of coaching role capacity to ensure they are still in a job inorder to make their decisions that bit easier to make.
Theyll be after a good defender and possibly forward and will have to trade someone of the likes of Stokes/Varcoe/Gamble/Kelly(unlikely)* to upgrade a draft pick to try and make it happen.
*If the deal was good enough theyd probably consider it.

Harley will be moving to Sydney when he retires to be with his soon to be wife, as much as I would love to see him stay around Geelong.
Could he do a commute from Sydney, just like Chris Langford used to commute to Hawthorn from Sydney in the 90s

Varcoe will be the number 1 "trade bait" that Geelong will hang out to entice clubs to trade.

With Harley most likely retiring, and Varcoe leaving for a draft pick, Geelong will then have a little room for movement in the salary cap.

And I'd think by now Milburn and Scarlett would have half their salaries not counted under the veterans list rule.

Varcoe, Byrnes or Wojinski will be the 3 shopped around you would think.

Can't believe some Cats supporters are mentioning trading Hogan. We're not going to trade away the future of our club.

Anyway I haven't got a clue who will go, not really fussed at the moment.

if as reported te Cats need to trade due to cap restraints then I would think trading fringe players will not be enough and they would need to trade players that are consistently in their best 22

I know Varcoe's GF performances are questionable and Stokes did not play yesterday however I would like to see the Crows enquire about both players

I don't know if they really need to trade. Egan is now gone, Dave Johnson, Tenace and Lonergan could all follow as well as Harley. They would have all been on a bit of money.

For the other players it will be up to them if they want to stay at the club or get some more money elsewhere, or if the younger players who may want to look for more opportunity.

Could he do a commute from Sydney, just like Chris Langford used to commute to Hawthorn from Sydney in the 90s

Lets face it he is barely in the side these days on playing ability, if he is commuting and away from the side you lose the intangible leadership stuff he brings to the club.

And LOL at lining up for Gillies, as if we would let him go with Harley and Milburn retiring this year and next. He still has a year on his base contract anyway.

players like kelly, enright, stokes, tenace, varcoe, lonergan, gamble are the type of names i can see being put on the table.. especially the first few.. they're experienced enough yet not too old so they'd be of worth to other clubs, and as far as geelong goes they're not in their 'elite' bracket.

I think the important players have all but signed on and those who haven't will. So it will only be a matter of losing a few who keep missing out - Gamble, Djerkurra etc or are just in the side - Wojo, Byrnes, Varcoe. No real loss there, and nothing that anyone with a half a brain would pay much for. I can't see their future in Hawkins, Gillies and Hogan leaving.

The guys who probably are most susceptible for a big money buy out are probably not Ablett, Bartel, Selwood, Chappy, Stevie J, Ling but the guys who are absolute guns and would be top 3 at any other club - Enright, Kelly and Mackie for example. Watching Geelong yesterday I was just in awe of the fact that Kelly and Enright play in their backline. They are first class midfielders who due to depth of talent play back pocket and back flank. In terms of percentage of cash they are missing out on I reckon these guys would be right up there. Whilst Ablett might have to sacrifice a couple of hundred grand to stay at the cats he'll still get a lovely contract. Kelly and Enright on the other hand are probably really missing out for the sake of success. Plus whilst others like Chappy, Stevie J just miss out of $, these guys probably miss out on recognition - who likes the backline!

ahahahah i cannot believe someone has mentioned enright.

i'll eat my own testicles if we get rid of boris.

he has been unbelievable this year, only gaz will challenge him for the b&f.

It would be most likely the fringe players who've been around for a little
Looking at guys like Kane Tenace, David Johnson, Josh Hunt, Tom Lonergan, David Wojcinski

Can't see it being fringe/outer players - as they aren't taking up the salary space.

Though Wojak and a few others actually in the best 22 will be there.

I'd be keen on Varcoe - really stood up yesterday. Great pace, great effort and good skills.

Definitely give up pick 23 for him

- Untouchable = Hawkins, Chapman, Ottens, Ablett, Bartel, Ling, Selwood, Scarlett, Taylor, Enright.

- No chance of a trade for these guys no matter the offer. They are the main reason we are premiers.

- Ottens only been at Geelong for 5 years so not eligible for veterans list. However Mooney I think is.

- Varcoe very unlikely to be traded given his brother is at the cats and he is an important part of the team.

Likely retirements: Egan, Harley

On the table: Gamble, Tenace, West, David Johnson, Djerkurra, Lonergan.
If we are desperate: Blake, Stokes, Wojscinski.

I think we should be alright if we restructure Mooney's deal, lose Tenace's bloated salary and either Harley retires or one of Stokes/Blake are traded.

I don't think we will lose anyone big and if we do it would be to the gold coast next year. We will just end up bleeding quality depth players like Prismall so that when we hit the wall we will be completely screwed.

if there are salary cap issues then you have to give up some quality.. that's all there is to it.

the only players geelong supporters have listed as players they'd be willing to give up are players that are not in your best 22, and would struggle to fit into many other sides best 22's.. and even if they are traded, wont have much impact on geelongs salary cap..

seriously... Djerkurra??? is he honestly the answer to your salary cap issues?

If you listen to what Bomber actually said this is pretty much exactly what he wants to avoid. He is looking to get quality picks to get quality kids in so they can try and extend their dynasty as long as possible.

The only way to do that is to get rid of someone of quality. Not neccessarily in your top 10 but certainly in your top 22.

James Kelly would be the Geelong player I'd target for Carlton.

Kelly is a gun with a very good kick, quick, makes good decisions and doesn't panic when he's under pressure in a tight situation.

A bit like Andy McKay.

Kelly's hardness is underrated by opposition fans.

I'd trade celtic_pride for Tenace if they're willing to take him back.
