Two players a week for dangerous tackles but I don’t recall seeing one like this which is not a sling tackle or two clear motions. This is breaking new ground if I’m not mistaken.

Another incremental step by the AFL in their desire to have the footy public accept the game without tackles that go to ground imo.

The minute the umpires pay a free kick for a dangerous tackle it would automatically get looked at.
People on here are acting like Close is the only person to get suspended this season for a tackle like this.
In fact about 2 players per week are getting done
I don't have an issue with that, my issue is that fox footy have guys like Ralphy who basically suspension bait. Instead of just saying "the tribunal will look at that" he parrots on about how it has to be one week etc. His opinion, as a person who never played at the highest level has no weight, and yet they pushed it 4 times post match.

Close shouldn't, and I hope won't get suspension, but the main takeaway from my post should be about how footy telecasts are pushing a really shitty narrative.

Can someone enlighten me to when it changed you don’t have a larger suspension added if your challenge fails?
I like it this way personally but not sure when it changed.

Just imagine the comments if he actually gets off, apparently we’re already protected.
Imagine if he gets off the week we play Richmond
My god
Right back in 2017

Well Ralph’s does also go for the tuggers

We also have until 5min before the hearing to withdraw our challenge.

The charge / suspension is just too damn stupid to go unchallenged.

That said, I have no faith in the AFL's ability to exercise commonsense, but do believe in their ability to be obstinate in the face of reason........so I have no idea what will happen.

I rarely watch any games Geelong aren't involved in now due to the state of the game and the standard of commentary but if this challenge is unsuccessful it might make me think twice about watching it at all ....might just listen on the radio whilst doing other things.

I'm really starting to become disenchanted.

I'm getting that way myself.

I used to watch it avidly. Not so much now.

Really? Why do you think that?
I think we will really struggle this week.

I saw it as a 50 / 50 game last week, and was reassured (different poster) that we'd win by '10 - 12 goals'.

We fought hard for a 4 goal win, and 2 of those came at the death. Along the way we lost Danger.

The positive is that we lost him at 1/2 time, but our MF stood their ground, although the Crows gave us a good scare.

Can we do it again for a full game without Danger?

EDIT: getting OT here.......

This game is far more 50/50 than last week imo.

Danger out of the team, Close out of the team, playing at the G with Tigers coming off a confidence-boosting gimme win.

$4 or whatever it is for Richmond is crazy juicy.

We legit got about 10 guys out and a bunch of kids playing.

I'll take a win in any form... just want those 4 points.

Really? Sorry to hear that, but I personally can't really relate to this sentiment. IMO footy's been way more watchable lately than it was in the mid to late 2010s and there's been heaps of great games to watch as a neutral this year! I've been enjoying it. :)

I watch the Cats play, as much as I can, because I love the club, but the joy of football itself has dwindled for me, hence I don't watch other games as avidly as I once did.

The rule changes, the bewildering interpretations, the plummeting quality of the umpiring, and the AFL's meddling has taken a fair bit of the gloss off for me.

You know what drives me crazy with the umps these days that nobody mentions? (rhetorical question).

When the ump is on the wrong side of the play and guesses... Like with the early Cameron handball he looked to get away but the ump was on the inside of the action and guessed.

1... I'm not down with them guessing, If you don't see it, it should be play on.
2... And this is what annoys me the most... There are now 4 of them on the ground and whenever they get blindsided it's because they are on the inside of the play and not the boundary line side so they have one ump with a view from each angle.

Maybe I'm just grumpy but it annoys me that they added another field ump and I'm seeing them guess weekly.

Spot on.

The increasing demand for heightened professionalism by players, coaches, club and staff stands in stark contrast to the silence around the amateur hour that is 'umpiring', and the freefall in its quality.
