Brisbane. As I have the last few prelims, I am waiting for them to prove me wrong that they can perform at a high enough level in finals to win a prelim. The semi final was a good game for Geelong fans, but we (a) need to accept that Collingwood were not playing to anywhere near the standard that a Richmond, Port and Brisbane have been and (b) this group has done the whole "win the SF comfortably and then get beaten easily in the prelim" bit before, so a comprehensive SF win doesn't really assuage any doubts for me about their capacity to perform in the most cut-throat game of the season.

Besides, while we have played well at the Gabba this year, which has given us some hope of something reminiscent of a home ground advantage against some sides, it is Brisbane's true home ground and they surely benefit more from it. Brisbane are also just a really good team. I still rate Richmond at this point in time, and the way they dismantled them was very impressive. I don't think Geelong could have done it (certainly Geelong were nowhere near Richmond just a few weeks prior). Their form line has been more consistent and even earlier in the year the difference between the teams was a one-quarter fade-out from them, which I think they are more likely to improve upon than this Geelong group, under Chris Scott, is likely to improve on its penchant for struggling when the heat is really on in finals.

On one hand, you could say there's no shame dropping this to the Lions. On the other, lose this and it's the fifth prelim chance blown under Scott, which is a lot of wasted chances. The amount of hope and excitement I have for and about us making a GF, and the potential fun of all that, is the lowest it's been, which is sad because supporters should feel immense anticipation at this time. But so many times now I've allowed, even up to last year, to think it might be the time Scott's team performs and they always disappoint. The game is either done by quarter time or we build a lead that is eroded in a quarter. Hard to know what's worse - you get excited about your side having a chance at a GF but then it's all gone after about 10 minutes into the game (2016/2017), or the side actually is competitive for a portion of the game, builds a lead, allowing you to get hooked into the prospect of a grand final berth even more, and then you see them fade rapidly in front of you and in the span of a quarter (2013/2019). Besides perhaps the 2013 PF (but we really did get creamed in the last), which is the furthest from today, we haven't remained competitive for a full game in any of those prelims.
Well thought out post and every single Geelong supporter has some degree of this going through them currently. At least this season we don't have the usual important injury/suspension or two. I would be even more nervous if we were about to face Richmond after a bye, ready for 2016 prelim style post-bye malaise. I'm still less nervous at the Gabba than I am at an 80,000+ MCG. This year Geelong's performances at the Gabba have been as good as Brisbane's - that hasn't been the case in the years we were facing MCG tenants in finals. I actually trust this group more than our 2016-2017 side, even if a lot of the players are the same. Perhaps except in front of goal, where we have lost 2 of our 4 past finals primarily (in my opinion) by failing to convert first half opportunities into scoreboard dominance. The general performance levels over those 4 finals has been pretty good, but I do agree that in the two we lost we had one deplorable quarter (third quarter, in each case), almost conceding defeat after missing the first half shots. I don't yet trust this team to avoid a repeat in that regard, but I think if our goal kicking is reasonable from the first bounce we are an even money chance. I certainly didn't think that in our two most previous prelims.

good post.

we also need to ensure we control the Centre corridor for the game. We need to dictate defending the corridor and pushing the ball back through the Centre to attack. We can’t be pushed long and wide all game and let Brisbane move the ball central. This occurred a lot in the port game and we were forced wide and slow with little options.. what it also meant was when we got pushed slow and wide, that if a turnover occurred, port could bring the ball back into the middle on the turnover.

if we can’t bring the ball back in through the corridor with our movement, then we need to look to switch it to the other side of the ground, we can’t be bombing it long and high down the wing slowly. You need to own and control the ball not kick it long and high to contests down the wing of the ground.

we need to have a principle of only kick it long and high down the wing if we are trying to gain territory from deep in defense and are happy to re group for a throw in. Otherwise we need to avoid contests and either switch it or bring the ball back central

As usual, an excellent post with some thought and understanding behind it.

I have no idea why posters use the term ‘trolling’ for your posts. You contribute a f*ckload more than 95% of the posters on this thread with their tired and basic understanding of what they see.

I get called that by a small group because I Call them out for Attacking anyone who praises the club, the boards gotten to a point we’re people are scared to be optimistic because they get attacked and bullied for it by a small group.

cheers for that. I try to look at the game analytically, not the media cheap analysis you often get or a poor mans analysis of player x or y cost us the game for a kick or so.. coaches look a lot deeper than this to their structures and systems for what’s occurred.

ross Lyon literally said and I quote when asked about his opinion on a bit of play “ I don’t know because I don’t watch the current play, I mostly watch the players off the ball to make sure they are setting up properly defensively and offensively”.

this is probably true for all the coaches. It’s a full time job with an entire team of full time assistants for a good reason.

As much as I wish I could disagree with this and make a case why Geelong is something close to an even money chance (as it should be once you have the 4 best teams qualified through to Prelims), I'm afraid I can't. It's just not possible to ignore the history of this team in finals under Scott. Add to that, on more than one occasion they have demonstrated the tendency to get carried away with their own publicity after big wins only to fall apart the following week because they expect it to all happen again without equivalent intensity, effort, etc. I will be ready (and happy!) to eat a healthy serving of humble pie if I am off the mark here. C'mon Cats, prove me wrong!!!

Just loved Ross Lyon on Footy Class tonight being so confident that the Cats will win. All the other ordinary people went for Lions because they are the home team and have had a break but Ross the Boss said the Cats love the Gabba and they are better off for having played through. He was adament. Love it. This is our time, come on boys.

Don't watch that show cos I can't stand Eddie everywhere. Both Betts and Lewis went for us on AFL360.

I'll feel a little more at ease if the mob Kenny from Camperdown coaches do the big heads on Friday. Think we can take them if we get through on Saturday. Much less sure about beating the big heads.

Don’t like the sound of this.

yeah thought he'd be staying away from the trainers

man I was so ambivalent about this game on Sunday and Monday, no expectations etc. hit me like a brick wall yesterday though, Saturday can't come soon enough

Hahaha maybe he needs a bit of work on his hammy's.... Cats by 20+ points - Lions too young and inexperienced. Our true test will be vs Port Adelaide in the grand final.

yeah Ross was really bullish about our chances,
No reason not to be.
We’re not absolute morals but we should all be feeling very confident

Here’s my (Cats) ideal world prediction for next two weeks:

Tigers v Port : Brutal gruelling and nail biting win to Port. Several injuries and lots of sore players
Cats v Lions. : Another fizzer which cats win comfortably.
GF: Port do a giants and check out for the day.( Having done a collingwood the week before)
Fairy tales for Ablett and Harry. Danger gets his premiership and the Norm Smith.
Monkey leaps off Scott’s back and attaches to Ken Hinkley.

How’s that for optimism GC-26 ?
Thing is, its all possible.

No Probs..just bring in Jarvis for his second game.

With Rowans history , I'm not sure he should play if not right ... who plays? Cant see it being anyone we have not seen.... but if Stanley is anyway dodgy then maybe Sav comes in. ..depends what we see as Rohans function if pressure maybe its close or atkins.

I like having the three marking options

I think you use it as an opportunity to bring in the best matchup for Rich you have. Which I guess would be Atkins? Brisbane set up a lot of their game through Birchall and Rich and as far as the teams currently match up one concern for me is that our forwards aren't that very accountable. Miers coming out to shift that balance would still be my preference (even though he played well against Collingwood... everyone did)

Anyway we should put Brisbane to bed by 20+ points if we kick straight and Scott doesn't butcher our tactics.
