What can you say?!?
I’ll give it a go…

What a privilege it is to follow this club. Professionals from top to bottom. They have made a conscious decision to give their players and their fans a commitment to competing constantly. They knew this was risky and unprecedented and would be mocked/ridiculed but they have stuck to the task and delivered. It is vindication for all involved.

I was confident about this flag since the Carlton game. Everything was falling into place. A fit list, a game plan that other sides were struggling to unpick and no other clear contenders emerging. Moreover, the players seemed to have a hunger and a resolve not seen previously. There was no sense that near enough would be good enough.

To the game, I thought Smith was marvellous and a worthy Norm winner, but he had many friends.

Dangerfield was superb in the contests and never gave the Swans mids a sniff. If ever there has been a player deserving of a flag it is him. So pleased for him. If he had kicked a goal or two the Norm might have been his.

Selwood - what can you say? As I said in his dedicated thread I think he’s now the greatest ever Cat. He set the tone in the first quarter. He has carried this team on his back for a decade and now gets due reward and recognition.

Hawkins was another with claims on the Norm. Had he kicked to par in 2011 and 2022 he’d be a dual Norm Smith winner. The two ruck-forward goals in the first put the game on our terms. The scenes with him and Joel at the end of the game were magnificent and gave me the feels.

Blicavs topped off a great season, probably a third Carji year, with a great game. I saw Mills was tagging him at one point such was his influence.

Stanley toweled one of his bogey opponents. So happy for the big guy after all he has been through.

Stengle capped a fine season and the best footy story in years with a perfect forward pocket performance.

The back six were impenetrable. I wouldn’t single out any but all were superb.

Overall, what a satisfying win. As fans we have been put through the wringer in the past decade. The mountain load of wins have been very enjoyable but as I was saying to bulletproof last night, the goodwill and glow from them wears off over time. We needed the flag to frank the teams standing in history. Congratulations to all involved, it was superb. Love this club.

Replay Observations:

Absolute Mastery.
A Vulgar Display of Power.

My big worry going in was that Rhys Stanley might get pantsed by Tom Hickey - first bounce though, and Stanley hit the contest exactly how I would have hoped - jumps confidently at the ball up, and then follows up at ground level to get an early handball moments later. Crucial, tone-setting stuff.
Instrumental in a clearance later in the quarter which directly lead to Isaac Smith's 1st goal.

Zac Tuohy - how did his first kick of the day find Hawkins on the lead?? His right boot was as razor sharp as always on Grand Final day in 2022. Gone past Sydney's Tadgh Kenneally as the 2nd best Australian Rules player to have come across from Ireland.

Brad Close's low-key genius - this guy, I tell ya .... - early in the first quarter, right; Brad Close declines to take possession and instead taps the incoming ball on to Blicavs who snaps but misses. Last quarter; Close repeats the dose to directly assist in Joel Selwood's Already Iconic Goal. That is consistently good, smart football from #45- did it twice in an identical manner on GF day. What a class player. Paddles one to Hawkins tucked up on the boundary of the half-forward flank late in the first quarter; just made the ball talk without registering a disposal.

It took a full 9 minutes before we scored our first goal - there's that horrible feeling that for all of the team's dominance to that point we hadn't made Sydney pay on the scoreboard, and it would only take a couple of cohesive plays from Sydney to make us pay dearly... Tom Hawkins has had his issues converting scoring opportunities in Finals, but his first two goals in the 2022 Grand Final were the very epitome of Taking Your Chance.
The Ruck is a really unforgiving role - Hickey got two early, bitter tastes of his own medicine in this game, Hawkins just out-manned him in front of 100,000 people.

When Hayward kicks Sydney's first, we're two thirds of the way through the first quarter and it's 7 points the difference - still game on, despite us having the game largely on our terms to this point. In retrospect it is obvious how much better we were playing than Sydney. But at the time I was very, very anxious.

Mitch Duncan played the kind of quality, self-effacing hand that he's played for his entire career. Clean and composed, calm and clinical.

If you'd told me pre-game that Jeremy Cameron and Tom Stewart would be subdued on the day I'd have had the jitters; turns out we had so many weapons and such a strong system that we didn't need star turns from anyone (even though we got plenty anyway).

Still so much to absorb; 16 wins in a row, domination at the MCG, Holmes, maybe Bruhn, Toby Conway - given our age profile and the possibility of Joel Selwood's retirement this Flag is presented as something of a swansong; I think we might be just beginning.

Lastly, full marks to Jeremy Cameron for his crack-a-tinny mimework late in the game; Marcel Marceau is applauding from behind an imaginary pane of glass somewhere ..

Bit of a weird one but did anyone here go to the family day and buy a t-shirt/hoodie in men's XXL who could tell me what the fit is like? Most of that cotton on gear the club has had seems to run smaller and I'm a chap who needs a bit more room... For reasons.

I NEED a XXL as well, t-shirt fits nicely

Well done.

It's now become even more apparent that club values and spirit are around embracing the players, their needs and families. This was the type of culture that Frank Costa always sought to embody, and under him we started the path alongside Community. I was involved in some of that endeavour with the then young players coming through. Players I was so proud to watch yesterday, knowing they are great humans, as well as footy stars. They care for people on the periphery, ignoring the knockers and focusing on positives.

Covid changed the landscape, and the trials faced by players and their families, forged a way for greater appreciation of off field living. It's this forward thinking that sees our on field success, player satisfaction and destination attraction. Gone are the recent inhumane days that treat a team like machinery, as has been alleged this week. We are all so much better for it.

Beautiful Stuff Catempire.

They Got That Flag.

The optimists and pessimists one and all agreed that we needed that one moment of Selwood + Scott lifting a trophy to justify 10 years of quality.

We got it in the most satisfying way of all; it's been a real life lesson to watch this group work year after year to get better in order to keep pace with and then finally surpass the competition. Geelong supporters have had a really special ride; thankfully there's not a lot of entitlement and a lot of philophising - this is a byproduct of the ups and downs and emotionally nuanced journey we've undertaken when taking Geelong into our hearts.

Looking back, that win against Richmond really gave me a lot of belief as a supporter this year - Tom Stewart's big unsociable hit on a red-hot Dion Presita and subsequent BOG display was a season-shaping subplot and the game itself was electric.

Anyone know what Nathan Buckley was on about when he presented the medal to Isaac Smith.

“The winner of the Norm Smith medal - no relation - Isaac Smith”

Made no sense

Sent from my iPhone using BigFooty.com

No relation to norm smith

I honestly don’t think we had one poor player on the ground. Cameron was uncharacteristically quiet for him but was still a contributor. Thought Stewart was quiet at the game but watching the replay he had some terrific moments too. Was just a complete team effort.
