They are teenagers when they come into the system and you expect some indiscretions, but JDG is no greenhorn anymore and after 10 years in the comp knows what’s required - he just chooses the Dane Swan version over the Dusty version (who is very careful and discreet) - I know which one I would prefer at our club and it’s not JDG

So now we aren't arguing character but discretion. So if we hire Buddy's minder and deactivate his socials while he is out on the turps - then surely he is good to go?

Also Buddy's antics at the F1 in 2013 were roughly at JDG's age now - I don't remember a chorus of people saying we should rip up contract offers at the time. Hodge was 30 and club captain when he got busted for drink driving. Did we demand him to be stripped of the captaincy and sit out the season? Of course not.

Again - if JDG was proven to have done nothing wrong in NYC, then the last time he was in any demonstrable trouble would be almost 4 years ago and people want to draw parallels to Colin Sylvia and Ben Cousins?? Be reasonable.

The constant perception here that we have a list full of choirboys is amusing. There's a reason you should tell your kids the only emulation of athletes they should follow is on the field - because off the field they are human as anyone else, and highly paid, young humans with far more temptations than us mere mortals have at that.
Comparing Bud to Degoey in terms of on field output is the the part I struggle most with here.

I've never once done that. I said in a previous post that Buddy was a better player - however JDG is in the present upper tier of players in the league.

Sorry mate. I wasnt trying to put words in your mouth rather just declare my thoughts.
IMO JDG has games where he is dominant for bursts during a game and then is quiet for weeks at a time.
I guess there is no point in us arguing our value of JDG but for a risk/reward scenario I'm just not there.

He isn't coming to Hawthorn for small coin and low collateral. Their will be a sting there somewhere.

To think you would put that moment of stupidity from hodge in the same basket blows my mind

For the record I’ve never been a fan of Buddy’s and I’ve been quite open about that. Was I pissed he left, you bet, but because of the way he went about it - nothing else. It has given me the shits how much he got away with at the Hawks and Sydney and only reinforces the different treatment of different players and the outcomes

The difference for me is that you never even hear a whisper about Dusty and for all I know he could be a clean skin these days - others may know differently, unfortunately what the club, supporters and more importantly sponsors see and hear is what they base their opinions on and atm he stinks

I’m all for everyone getting the benefit of the doubt and second chances - if it wasn’t for one woman supposedly cadging drinks, none of us would be any wiser to his antics but fact is, we are aware and it’s hard to buy the JDG has “seen the Petracca light”

He is a senior player and should be leading by example and he isn’t

I doubt I'll convince anyone who is already holding that view. Just as someone who was in the 'under no 'circumstances' camp when it came to should we look at Martin, I regret that line of thinking. That and I know I will accept a certain level of ratbaggery from Hawthorn players so it is hypocritical to hold it against other side's players (again when players haven't stepped way outside the line). Just if JDG was to walk cheaply at the end of next season I would hate if we didn't look at it and he ended up at either Richmond or the filth and helped strengthen their hands.

Again - IF he is cleared of any wrongdoing in NY then I fail to see what he has done that is so unforgivable. He likes the sauce and is a bit of a toss? Okay - so are plenty of athletes who I enjoy watching do their thing on the turf. He has some driving offences in the past? Join the long list of AFL players with that strike against their name.

That is very generous.

He's on $750k a season and was offered $1M a season by Norf - which I know is standard for any free agent, but it's not as silly a comment as you're making out. I'd agree he needs to become more consistent and fulfil his potential more. But at his best he is a game-changing player.

That's because he's highly rated based on potential (which is unquestionably high) and what he's shown sporadically throughout his career. Presently he is an above average player who sometimes has a very good game. The upper echelon of players in the league are far more reliable, consistently out performing him. In fact there are plenty of players who have far less natural talent than he does that perform better than him on average due to their consistent work rate.

what sort of capital would you give up for him & what would you offer $ wise?

I would give up next to nothing, asset wise (via trade). He carries too much risk to exacerbate it by giving up big assets.

Money - I'd not low-ball him to make a point, but I'd want to pay for performance, not his potential.

For these reasons, I don't think we'd get him.

with a good contract and them on the bottom they might

Quite true. Collingwood would be good odds for a bottom four finish also - would be a very interesting bidding war if they just let him walk but his reputation wasn’t completely ruined.

So was Hodge when on the eve of HFC playing finals our captain was caught drink driving

Don’t think I mentioned anywhere that I was okay with what he did - I do take offence though that he be placed in the same basket as repeat offender JDG

It’s all hypothetical anyway - he’s not coming to the Hawks and pies aren’t letting a player of his quality go
