That was 35 years ago. If you can't see how yesterday may be a little bit different to that well I can't really comment further
Yeah going back out 35 years ago when they knew the injury and you were allowed to basically do anything to players violently and players routinely targeted injuries, against a time where you can’t even tackle with much force is a ridiculous comparison.

No, you can’t because it isn’t different.
So in 35 years we have had no advancement in sports science or medical injuries due to sport?

Maybe ask a few of our guys from that game how they are faring now .
It's a different time and sometimes players need to be protected from themselves .

Melbourne let Petracca down yesterday by allowing him back out there in the state he was in.

I remember reading an article about Dermie detailing how he had to get multiple surgeries to his spine where he had metal plates inserted and vertebrae fused. The amount of big hits he had throughout his career and then just got back up and toughed it out back then was worn as a badge of honour and celebrated be all. Looking back now he has reservations about certain decisions he made with the pain he now endures.

Here’s a couple of articles I could find:

If you were to apply todays standards to yesteryear, and use the example of the 89 gf brought up in previous posts, at what point should the doctors have made the decision to bring dipper off for his own good? And if this happened in that game at whatever time it was deemed to be ‘proper’, would we still have won the game?

Dipper almost died because he played on.

These guys will push themselves to the limits to win. It’s about the doctors being there to protect them from themselves and the coaches.

It’s why Petracca going out there was terrible from the doctors. Would have only taken a bump or another knee in a marking contest and it could have ended very differently.

Health is more important than winning

So, in this house of hindsight you have constructed, your contention is that the doctor deliberately sacrificed patracca’s welfare for the benefit of the club? That he had all the knowledge needed, developed over the last 35 years, to instantly diagnose the injury? When does the malpractice suit begin as well as the license revocation?

They don’t need an X-ray at the MCG, the need a time machine.

Your medical assessment that “just a bump” could have made it all very different is based on what expertise?

This is the problem with hindsight. It overfits bad examples. Was Sicily and the Hawthorn doctor grossly incompetent in the Bulldog’s game? You don’t give any credit to the literal thousands of times doctors make the right decision allowing a player back into the field, focusing only on the one decision that was wrong. And worse, only clearly wrong after the event.

Given he already had a lacerated spleen, 4 broken ribs and a punctured lung any hit to that area could easily have made it worse.

Doctors have been sending players back on who are struggling following head knocks constantly as well as sending players back out to get injured further this year (Rozee).

The doctors are there to catch these things. Can’t just say “whoops” if it all backfires.

Another key difference is there were only two on the bench when Dipper did it - and they were both half dead as well - at least Platten was.

no way, about 10 blokes wouldn't have been allowed to play after HT
