All this talk about whether or not to select the best mids instead of wings in the AA side is so frustrating. This idea that the 6th or 7th best inside mid is as important to the team as a wingman just feels wrong. Every club no matter how good or how terrible has an inside mid with a case to be planted on the wing in the AA team, but only the best teams have them on the outside.

Almost every flag for the past decade has coincided with clubs that have had a jet wingman either traded in, or one that announces themselves as a jet wingman in that year. Daicos at the Pies, Smith at Geelong, Langdon at Melbourne, Kane Lambert at Richmond who may well be the most underrated wingman of the past 20 years, Hill and Smith again at the Hawks.

Often the difference between the premier and an also ran is that guy on the outside doing thankless running, linking up, covering holes in defence and getting involved in chains moving forward. Players with no one on the outside are terrible to watch because they have no movement, like Geelong pre-Smith and Melbourne pre-Langdon. Richmond without Lambert covering for Dusty's lack of defensive effort was a 5-6 goal worse side. Media pundits need to start treating the wingmen with respect for the impact they have.

They pick also love picking a heap of KPF’s and no small forwards as well as 2-3 full backs and the rest rebounding defenders.

It’s far away from who’d they’d pick if they had to play an actual game.

I think it means the most. Coaches know what hurts and what doesn't hurt better than most, certainly better than the Brownlow and though not as well rated as the MVP it is more important. The players will tend to follow the leader and many don't really care about the votes they put in, and that's coming straight from multiple players.

Brownlow has its place with history but coaches association is the best reflection on who has been the best performed player of the year

Crazy to think how good he is given how young he is and how much growth and improvement he has left in him.

Scrimshaw and Impey weren't even mentioned in the most the the discussions about possibilities for the squads... Both have been excellent. Given we don't have any key position backs and our defence is holding up so well, someone must be playing well?

Haven’t heard but did Oliver Bradbury (Cats) get the Rising Star Award ?

I know the balance of the AA team is always bad but it feels even worse this year.

One lockdown defender, one who occasionally goes near his opponent but prefers to play loose, and 4 who are too busy playing kick to kick with teammates to even bother looking for an opponent to pick up with one more on the bench.

Also having 3 tall forwards compared to one small forward, as well as having 9 inside mids.

Unsurprisingly another joke of an all Australian team… it loses credibility more and more each year..

• Daicos never played wing - absolutely laughable- just put him on the bench and put Whitfield half back and sack Ryan for Massimo
• Luke Ryan in the team for taking the kick outs and chipping it around the backline all year is bad- and he didn’t do much at all 2nd half of the year
• Blakey started the year well but fell away big time- very lucky to make it
• Moore never played forward pocket- is a high half forward and Heeney and Warner are midfielders
• West coast with two all Australians is woeful
• McGovern over Andrews is bewildering
• Waterman had a couple of big games but also fell away big time

The concerns for me:

• Luke Ryan back pocket - when he's good he's really good, but he got worked out about 2/3 of the way into the season
• Jake Waterman no. Just no. Either put Stengle for a genuine small, or put Curnow.
• Daicos on the ball instead of Serong
• **** Blakey off and put Sicily there. Every single team in the comp would prefer Sicily's 2024 season to Blakey's.
• Gawn - I just don't like him tbh.
• Wing should be Merrett or Dambrosio. Merrett didn't play there much this season but he still plays a lot like a winger when he's centre square mid
• didn't think McGovern had an AA year
• Chad warner is not a HFF. at all. Just get rid of him
