I feel this is part of the problem with the club however, they feel like they owe him because of 21 rather than judging him on what hes done since. Or worse still, think it will happen again just coz we have a lot of the same players and the same coach, rather than going off the evidence the past 3 years, completely deluded.

Agree with this.

I'm not a fan at all of his and have waxed nauseam why, but I'm still going to give him credit for 2021.

That doesn't mean he gets a lifetime deal though, we've been EXTREMELY disappointing since that flag. Zero finals wins, regular losses vs other vic clubs in big games at the MCG, poor selection, culture issues etc etc. At some stage he has to cop it for that.

Basically it’s been a wild ride for some time and most of it downhill since even prior to the flag. These are some of the key points I can put together without thinking too much.

1. Some point in 2020 - a rift opens between President and other senior board members of the club about player and staff management. Various parties become concerned that the President’s demands aren’t viable.
2. Early 2021 - President “stands himself down” for personal reasons (uhuh)
3. Club wins flag
4. Previously quiet ex-president now commences the beginnings of a multi year wobbler for reasons
5. 2022 Simon Goodwin accused of drugs, swearing at a Doctor and saying that Angus Brayshaw shops at Chadstone
6. At some unknown point the board decide not to settle with ex president and give him a send-off, but decide to spend my and others membership money to prove a point nobody cared about
7. Winning games are becoming increasingly tedious
8. We lose games and they are still tedious
9. 2022 straight sets exit
10. 2023 the team is in discussions as a contender, though highly unreliable and increasingly boring.
11. Ex-President brings further disgrace on club by revealing the escalator door incident, the not-quite-in-the-VIP area incident and the photo showing the AFL CEO leaning somewhat
12. Some random starts emailing me and everyone about how he was denied due process in board elections

There is no doubt that, regardless of circumstance, the declining performance of the team and the entertainment it provides is the responsibility of the senior coach first. Having said this, Goodwin has been working in an extreme environment for some time that doesn’t make it easy for an individual to shine.

Long odds, but now that his so called support team instructing the need for finals finishes, loud cheering and membership renewals, I hope he lands in crazy Goody space and somehow makes 2025 memorable.

And he did win us a flag, and I think the odds of him getting that done were longer than we thought at the time. Our club is a mess good or bad. So thumbs up Goody - go forth and become mental again

Dislike almost everything we've done since, but i aint taking 21 off him. **** him off now, but he'll rightfully be at reunions

Nah, Bailey was a great tactical coach that was working at a horrible club. His footy back then is what teams wanna play now.

My memory was it was far more unaccountable footy than what teams do now. Mainly though, was horrible for the culture.

I will defend Bailey that he was an alright coach that was trying to do something with an absolutely fractured club. Certainly was trying to model the Geelong game style at the time

Not perfect though, ****ing off some handy veterans probably didn't help the rebuild but i don't know how much of that decision was him. The out of balance of pure footballers v athletes was out of whack too with the list management

But he was certainly coaching with his hands tied with internal pressures coming from the real poisons within the club like Connolly and Schwabb being quite involved with how the club and gameday should operate. The mess that figures like those left certainly made it impossible for whoever came next, Neeld however still found a way to spiral it further

Bailey's biggest problem was he was a doormat and the players basically did what they liked off field. Don't think many coaches survive when their players are cancelling their own training sessions and protesting games like 186. Probably didn't help that he was basically at war with Schwab and the board during his entire tenure. Maybe if we had some better on field leaders he would have fared better.

IIRC Neeld wanted us to be the toughest team to play against. The team was stacked with soft outside runners, it was never going to work.

Bailey was the better coach but had everything go against him at the club which was an absolute disaster at all levels. Hard to know if he was actually good or not.

Neeld was the worst coach at AFL level in my lifetime.

Neeld didn't understand the available list profile and forcibly tried to create a contested/defensive focussed team with a bunch of players that couldn't do it.

What resulted was the most horrendously unwatchable football ever produced.
