I

I think we will all always be critical. I do feel that there is a shifting in culture with regards to how we support our team. Maybe I am getting old and grumpy and can't appreciate the nuances of modern day dialogue on social media.
My favourite time on this board was the Primus and Choco era. We called for the sacking of both coaches but still seemed to have a modicum of respect for the coaches and the players. It is hard to explain but this is 15 years ago I'm talking about hence the nostalgia. I remember when we had to put up with the quadruple switch in the backline during the Primus era. It was comical. But at that time there was also the selection night spoof with Dom, the godfather. And Mc Guinness with the stutter. It was comedy cold and probably the highlight of my time on this board. I'm not saying that anyone is wrong with the way they Barack. I was able to enjoy the sport and remembered how guys on here made supporting a club on its knees a bonding experience...
Btw, I would love to see a highlight of one of those selection nights. Can anybody resurrect one 😀

yes i think their has been a change in barracking from when we first got in the big league. the crowd and in general really got behind the team by voice and encouragement. Who can forget the eddie is a w***er chant. Disrespectful but also a statement about who we are. I except that the port crowd are poor loosers, and can jump off, but 50000 have signed up again and i for one are looking forward to them roaring this year and showing disrespect to the opposition.

I simply never adhere to the level of pessimism we have here on this site. Yes there are problems but when I lived in Adelaide I was a paying member every year and now I go to all the Victorian games. I am a NY Yankee fan since I was 9, A Dallas Cowboy fan since I was 10 and I follow Arsenal in the English league. Winning championships is a rare thing in all sports but the journey is the greatest part of all sports. Watch the development Of Conner Rozee. Watch Ladhams turn into one of the league's premier Ruckmen. See Georgiades turn into one the the games most dangerous forwards. See which one of our young draftees turns into an A-grader like Robbie Gray did. And maybe see the team do something special... Otherwise, I temper my disappointment so that I can enjoy the game that I grew to love. It was actually Bucky Cunningham that convinced me to join the club when we were still the Maggies. I was a member from the first game and watched some epic games with Brayden Lyle, Francou, James, Scotty Cummings, Shane Bond and Wanganeen. We never won the flag back in the early days but boy did we punch above our weight... So I am a POrt supporter because when it comes to sport, that is all I know. Being loyal to my team
Good post. I rarely visit this forum anymore because the level of pessimism and negativity towards the coach and certain players is too much for me and loser talk can become a self full filling prophecy over time. Amons rise to elite taught me not to write players off too early and richmond/ Collingwood rise has taught me not to write off coaches either.
I hold an optimistic view at the start of every season, I am tipping ports to finish 7-10 as are most posters on the main board. Winning a final would be nice.
I have been of the view that there were certain weaknesses in our team that have been holding us back for a while and it would appear most have been addressed through recruiting and improving the list. Apparently we now have a couple of decent back up rucks. Dixon finally looks ready to go. We have some dangerous looking forward options now so there is hope we can formulate a decent functional forward line. We now have some decent ball users too, Houston, Amon, Hartlett, Farrell, burton, lienert & the new recruits are all good to elite kicks. We still appear to have too many big bodied inside mids with poor kicks, boak, Ebert, spp, wines, Rockliff. Not sure how this will balance out? But Hinkley needs to get some younger players into the mix, we can't afford to carry people with rubbish kicking skills, it has hurt us for too long and we need a quality inside/ outside mid, we haven't had one since Francou and the burgoynes.
Hope springs eternal. Hinkleys challenge will be to get the structure right, play the kids, start to retire off some of the fading lights and remain competitive. We have lost so many games where we had enough chances to win in the last couple of seasons it's not funny. Get the structures right, get rid of some of the dud kicks, get the line up settled and balanced, get a bit of confidence up and we can go alright, top four maybe.

That’s literally the crux of the criticisms in a nutshell.

The coach and CEO blames ‘the inconsistency of youth’ for our failings, while deploying an old team in which the few youngsters (Houston, Rozee, Duursma) are often the brightest lights.

That supporters are negative about this is hardly out-of-the-blue rocket science.

When we entered the big league, my recollection was the port crowd consciously barracked in periods when the crow crowd would have gone quiet during a game. We were port adelaide we were better than that. The tarp days were tough, maybe tougher than the sturt years. Sitting in the same spot yu could look around at the same faces and that was it. We are in a much much better place now.

so who are the true believers, those resilient supporters from those hard days who still support with a passion or those today who would despoil, resort to tripe slogans and who as critics make themselves as experts?

You really are ignorant. The 'critics' ARE mostly those who were there 2008-2012, whilst your 'true believers' consist mostly of those who joined in 2013 or later (or aren't even Members).

I was there in '97 ( in fact since '79)

I try and start a chant when the team needs it not when it's easy.

I was there with the tarps.

I buy a platinum membership every year for myself and my Dad.

I still convince myself we can win at the first bounce every single game.

And I want to #sackhinckley.

I'm one of those resilient supporters what has been a member through thick and thin but that doesn't mean I can't be critical of the club when it is doing something that reduces our chances of being successful.

Your belief that true believers are those that don't question the club and instead blindly accept mediocrity and failure is delusional. You claim that members who are critics of the club's failings are making themselves as experts yet you claim to know more than these people making yourself as a greater expert.

The reactionary mounted police force has arrived with their word bludgeons of mediocrity, sack, good and brave critics everyone who have faith that just one small act will lead to what has to happen and is the one and only answer.

You just know these are all kids whose parents didnt want to tell them off because they were "expressing themselves" and whose coaches gave them participation awards.

Maybe. I genuinely don't get the reference so wanted it explained. The late 60s is before my time though
Losing 3 grand finals in a row isn't pleasant, but I will take that over the tarp days, any day.

I've never seen a Ports premiership, in fact the best season I've ever had as a Ports fan was under Hinkley.

SACK HINKLEY!
(unless we finish top 4 or make a prelim)

Sigh that posters can’t show any positivity at the beginning of a new season.
Sigh that unless you are part of the majority negative patting themselves on the back in crowd you are ridiculed by some and become part of the joke, albeit often subtly.
All posters are entitled to their opinion.
Yes, but if you post it, people are entitled to discuss, laud and ridicule it.
That's the whole point of this place.

Yes, at least we were making grand finals. Under "the great man Sir Hinkley" we can't even make finals let alone a granny.

It's a discussion forum. If you post rubbish opinions you are going to be challenged.

There's a big difference between being positive and being delusional.

Who defines rubbish posts or opinions is my question?

Call me crazy but this season has a 2013/14 vibe about it. We are in a pretty decent state all things considered but absolutely carried by our list management team.

It's the vibe. :)

Saying members who support the club financially yet criticise the club when it makes poor decisions aren't supporters is rubbish.

Saying that Hinkley is a great coach despite all the evidence suggesting otherwise is rubbish.

You can rationalise it all You like but the sack everyone brigade are contagious and the knock effect isn’t desirable .
Ive looked forward to a new season since 1966 and I’m not about to start white anting now .
Everyone knows Kenny’s gone if we don’t make the finals let’s just continue to support the club and each other . We are a tribe as supporters , let’s not develop a collective chip on our shoulders
