If we are looking for a KPF in this draft go after the one with the best clunking hands, both the McGoverns were picks in the 40s for example, the hit rate for KPs early in the draft is terrible.

This attribute was what Ratugolea demonstrated in game and at the testing he added vertical jump.

We can find another kid like that - hang on we already have - Jack Henry had the leap and good hands and was selected as a rookie.

One more at 198 -200cm athletic type with good hands as a top attribute can be found outside first round this year - not that I know of one.

The best kpf are either early picks or were not available to the whole draft pool with the exception of brown really. You want a good key forward. Draft early or trade for one.

Hawkins f/s
Reiwoldt 1st round pick
Franklin 1st round pick
Roughead 1st round pick
Lynch 1st round pick
Cameron pre-listed
Walker Not available to any other clubs
McKay and Curnow 1st round picks
Hogan mini draft. Required a first round
Patton 1st round pick
Hipwood 1st round pick
Kennedy 1st round pick
Daniher 1st round pick

You want a good key forward then pay the price

Is it really worth us getting the pick 5 this year? We'd be losing our best (probably) creative Mid for an unknown, who knows maybe Kelly will stay after his contract is over

Nothing officially announced, today the Addy has an article & some quotes from Simpson ahead of tomorrows final - opens with the following:

GEELONG is close to finalising a new deal with rookie-listed winger Sam Simpson that will see him extend his stay at the Cats beyond this season.
Simpson was taken in the 2017 rookie draft with pick 53 as a father-son selection and made his senior debut last year.

I'm assuming it's only going to be a 1-year rookie extension rather than a promotion to the senior list

Most if not all would prefer to see him come out and say Im staying and signing for an extra 2 etc. but we also have to be macro in in our vision. If he says after a fantastic year that the family still would prefer to go home... i will stay for the other year if you can but id prefer you to find a way etc...

then Geelong has to be strong and realistic. .. and the chance to get a KPF early in a draft is so rare for us... then to add that this draft's KPF have been rated for a fair while. Then add that Hawkins is 30... we have not had a KPF develop from with the draft for a long , long time because we generally do not get a pick early enough. Now Sav looks a potential long term player for us .. but if our whole future is tied to finding a replacement ..then id like to give it its best chance.

Again... If Kelly is a legit chance to be long term then we move on.. and try to find another way to go about it. No one will be pushing the trade if Kelly say he would prefer to stay.

There are exceptions but its the general rule. Hopefully we have one exception on our list ..but one does not ensure a future just on a singular hope.
To have a KPF in three Premierships all be FSons..we have been lucky. Atpit..there is no lucky FS's coming thru to play those roles.. perhaps a tad unlucky when you consider the surnames.. One would have thought that a Brownless and or a Mensch may have been tall players.

Ben or Max if we have the opportunity.

Barrett in Sliding Doors today:

"If 22 matches came and went in 2018 without Braydon Preuss playing one of them ...

Then we get it, given Goldy held up all year in a courageous run at the finals. But, Preuss now knows that the Roos, deep down, don't rate him. And other clubs do."

Hrmm!

Oh fun list... Now show the same list with the high pick failures...

I swear people pay no attention at all in here. Our CEO has twice stated Kelly will be a cat in 2019 yet people still hypothesising trades... why o_O

The thing is .. "Could"... Im certain thats why Wells sometimes call a rainmaker.. he doesn't think they will last till the next pick. If you want a certain player then it probably means an early call.

There are quite a few handy looking players.. some have a heap of different talent that would appeal..

Curtis Taylor for instance looks a Menzel replacement.

CURTIS TAYLOR

Half-forward/midfielder, 186cm, 79kg, Calder Cannons

Buckenara says: Taylor has a touch of class about him. He shows genuine footy nous and a good goal sense, while he can also push up into the midfield. He’s got good speed, is a long kick and can influence a game without winning a heap of the ball.

Plays like: Isaac Heeney (Sydney Swans)

and Connor Rozee

CONNOR ROZEE

Midfielder, 184cm, 72kg, North Adelaide

Buckenara says: Another South Australian who has really impressed, Rozee has footy smarts and is a good decision-maker with ball in hand. He shows great poise and is a really skilful player.

Plays like: Bryce Gibbs (Adelaide)

..but I think IF we found the Hawkins replacement .. it would be nice to find Joels replacement ..or at least a candidate for it..

XAVIER O’HALLORAN

Midfielder, 186cm, 82kg, Western Jets

Buckenara says: O’Halloran is a genuine ball winner. He’s a brilliant kick, is clean with his hands and makes good decisions on most occasions. Named Western Jets captain this year, so shows great leadership potential.

Plays like: Luke Parker (Sydney Swans)

Now he may be an early-ish call but adding more leadership options with ball winning and kicking ability..

Really enjoyed O'Halloran's highlights. Would take him with our late first rounder in a heartbeat. If we did have pick 5 we'd be at least a shot at max king provided GCS didn't draft both twins at 2 and 3

Pretty poor. Should be upgraded

Id like more info on pace and perhaps his aggression.. but everything I read about him ..fits into the type we need..

Western Jets captain and AFL prospect Xavier O’Halloran leading Vic Metro with aplomb in Under-18 National Championships

XAVIER O’Halloran’s considered responses provide insight into why he is so highly regarded.

Asked to detail his thoughts on what defines a strong leader, the 17-year-old made it clear he is not the sort to absolve himself of responsibility and bark orders.

But often overlooked is the fact a captain’s obligations stretch beyond the boundary line — far away from Ws and Ls.

“It’s being supportive of your teammates and just having their backs on and off the field,” O’Halloran told Leader.

“I think that’s really valuable. You feel really comfortable and welcomed in the environment.

“A leader through action as well — not just necessarily saying that you’re going to do something, but following it up with actions in games and demonstrating what you want and expect from the team.”

The St Bernard’s junior is captain of Western Jets’ TAC Cup side this season, with coach Torin Baker describing O’Halloran as “one of the better leaders I’ve probably come across”

heres something from last week that mentions a few names we like

Why?

Senior list spots look to be pretty tight come the end of this season, and while Simpson is a f&s he has only played 6 senior games of football across the past 2 years.

If a guy like Blicavs stayed in the rookie list for a 3rd year after playing 22 games during his second year then it's not going to hurt a Simpson.

If Simpson was playing regular senior football you may have more of a point, but at this stage a 3rd year on the rookie list looks a fair for where he is currently at in his career.

Disagree. Should be on the senior list
