This is a bit different to your approach and isn’t 100% accurate for a few reasons (bidding etc.) but it will be pretty close. It shows the difference between what clubs were “entitled” to based on ladder position and what they “spent”. A club with a positive value has generally acquired and used more picks (eg. By trading out players) while a club with a negative value has generally traded in players for picks.

It's beautiful! I was actually thinking about how my version would account for variation in value by round, I think my approach would have attributed significant value to spending a round 3 pick on your 5th named draftee for example. But the DVI approach accounts for that.

So overall we have traded out equivalent to pick 30 roughly.

Now make that a meme!

Well if he's best 22 at Freo and wants to leave and Freo are prepared to offer a lengthy contract, good luck to him I say. There was a time when if a player wanted out of our club for more opportunities we just signed their papers. Shouldn't be any different today. For me it is a bit rich to blame your lack of games or performance on an assistant coach.
Can't see him anywhere saying this. It's everyone else saying it

Scott should have overruled him.
You really can't do that as a leader. If you under mine your line coach then they are no longer accountable for the outcomes of their backline. If you don't back them 100% then they are not performing their role and need to be sacked.

The leadership mantra "back them until you sack them" is exactly what Scott did

It’s never a good sign if there’s a role so obviously needing filling, a player so obviously having the traits for it, yet can’t demand selection in that role. The obvious answer is he’s not good enough.
Well there are two obvious answers

1. The kid isn't good enough

Or

2. The line coach is mistaken

One has a reported 4 year deal on the table at Freo and the other is unemployed. There would be elements of truth in whatever Scarlett was saying, but it can't be so true that an opposition side wouldn't offer a huge deal.

Sorry but im not buying the Clarke Scarlett rift being the reason he wants to leave, if that was the issue then Scott could have stepped in and made the decision to play him, the fact that it didnt happen says to me that he wasnt in any plans anyway, Scarlett leaving wont change a thing because the top dog has burnt him too.
You can't undermine your line coaches like that, especially when it's in such a media transparent environment.

If you did then your post match analysis with that coach would be a waste of time. You'd get drawn into solving their problems for them, they'd cease to be part of solution to their own line and their entire position would be a waste of time.

You have to publicly back your line coaches analysis and if you can't do that then you don't need to step in and force change, you need to remove him from the role.

Do people think Gillett will be picked up in the draft? early pick? or rookie? Surely with that GFL record he would be right up there...
By all reports it would be a late pick or a rookie spot... as he only got invited to the Falcons from his form in the GFL. Would totally be worth a punt

If the club rates him, he would not be bad. I was surprised he was not put on a Rookie list at Carlton.

There was talk awhile ago ..of a Rookie list specifically for rucks. , lets call it Rookie R... to develop more tall ruck players. Whether it would just see less talls drafted and the overall numbers staying the same or not would be debatable but I suspect the way Jackson has played recently, obviously talented tall kids will still be drafted. I doubt Mac Andrew will be there after R1 this year. The Conway type would be interesting. If a ruck is a 30ish type but 3-5 years away would he not be drafted. Perhaps they would have to be a player passed over like a Henry type.

Letting Fort go would be proactive imo. He is contracted so our choice.. We have shown he will not be selected. We will play Stanley, the Sav and Blitz and then maybe even Henry before selecting him. What we get would be the usual type of spit and polish pick at the tail end of the draft imo. Maybe a future pick, maybe a player like you have previously mentioned. I like Brock Smith but his lack of progress would have me a little concerned.

How we replace Fort on the list if he gos would interest me. Personally I think the time for a mature state leauge PnP type is just about done, we have signed Stanley for two more. He will be selected most of the time ... unless the club changes its focus. So Rucks with a just about ready to go look would interest me if a trade could be done...lets say Hayes or Sweet. Im not sure on Lynch. If we have to deal with Collingwood a bit over the next couple of years it would be good if we could stay chummy. They need points.

If we have to draft one then Conway in our pick range would not be bad. Yes there are several next year, but we really do not know how they will be rated, who will be interested in drafting them and just what we have on our list. Has Neale signed yet for a contract extension? He may be a forward more than a ruck. How good is Tsap? Is SDek a backman. Well's generally has shown he can be a contrarian. When other are looking at talls he will look at the best mids as value.
Fort going allows Neale and Tsap to actually play in the Ruck at VFL level, if we want these guys to develop we are going to have to actually play them in the role at some point and take the risk of not having great cover in the short term for mine.

Sounds completely and utterly in keeping with Scarlo as a character, though. People talk about Scott's stubbornness and lack of people skills but potentially fail to understand that he's probably been outdone on those measures by one of his own coaching panel in recent years.

Legendary footballer, no doubt. Far less notable people manager, I would suspect.
Bit worried for Clark in this circumstance. A lot of surface level supporters have strong and basic opinions - one of which I keep seeing on social media - is “Scarlo should be our head coach” (which I think is completely stupid as he’s clearly shown that he’d not be able to do the job of Senior Coach - which requires a lot of nous). So if this type of supporter equates Clark staying to Scarlett leaving…

I think the way the game is being played now its all about take off speed, so quickness on 20m runs in the forward line and possibly suggests you only need one big forward

Fair point.

I tend towards option 1 as at no stage this year did I think Clark was stiff not to get a game.

Or being developed correctly.

Atkins is just an okay player. But given opportunity, trained correctly - he’s doing ok. Clark is way more talented, so there is definitely time and potential to bring the best out of him with the right coaching.

How do you disentangle from that the possibility (likelihood if we are being serious) that Atkins trains harder, has worked on his weaknesses, plays to instruction, etc.?

Would make more sense if Scarlett was staying.
You would think with him gone Clarke would stay unless he's pissed off with the club in general or just wants to head home.
While I accept it was probably Scarlett’s decision, someone should have told him to build a bridge before they tried to shoehorn Clark into a forward pocket.

In a sense, that IS the knock on Atkins. AFAIK he is regarded as a leader and well respected for his work ethic - and hence he has already hit his ceiling.

That said, the chatter out the club over last preseason was that Jordy Clark was the hard-training big improver.

Atkins is the type of player who’d be a mainstay in a Ross Lyon coached side. Hard working, presumably good attitude and professional, gives his all every time he takes to the field, solid contributor. At the same time, his skill set is limited, he can be shaky with ball in hand and he doesn’t have an ‘extra gear’ to go to when a game is close or the pressure is high. There were probably half a dozen Atkins-like players in the 09/10 St Kilda and 13/14 Freo sides who like us kept falling short at the final hurdle.

With Scarlett gone, I would hope that Atkins would become a squad/depth player in 2022 instead of a b22 lock. I’d rather give Clark an extended run across HBF if we keep him, or get MOC fit after a shocking year with injuries and move him back there.

Yeah, I think he's not our best wing and I think he's looked pretty average in the forward line so I understand. But the way we've been getting pinned in down back, and the lack of speed moving it out the backline has, I think, been a weakness there that has led to a flooded forward line and basically nullified our forward line advantage. I also remember his kicking and decision making being much better when he had the game in front of him. So I think he's b22 backline in a more attacking structure that better engages our strengths.

C'mon man, he's hardly gonna want to go on record with it. The fact that it is in the media says enough. Anyway, happy to disagree on this one. All I see is an unproven young player unrealistically demanding to be played in their preferred position and threatening to pack up their bags over it.
