As we are now getting into the season and we are starting to get a bit more serious with discussion, seems a suitable time to post the following as it's repeatedly shown itself to be a value reference tool in trade & draft discussion

And as per normal, thanks to Lore for putting this together - always a fantastic reference tool

And yes this post is now stickied - makes it easy to keep track of (can easily reverse this though if needed)

If they replace Hawk while injured with Sav instead of Neale, I believe Neale would have every right to be pi**ed off.
If we can’t win early games with Neale partnering Cameron, plus Rohan, Miers, Close, Stengle and OHenry, then we are in trouble.
We won many games pre Cameron, Stengle and Close.
If Neale shows the coaches that he can make it as a key forward, offer him a reasonable long contract mid season to tie him down before the end of the season.

Sav is a defender now so i doubt hes replacing hawk.
Realistically it will be neale or ollie henry while hawk is out (maybe both depending on if rohan is in the team) ollie gives us more at ground level but shannon is probably the better aerial threat and can also do the f50 rucking which helps our structure. I agree we need to try and sign neale before mid season (i imagine we are trying now).

Sav is being trained up as a key back... He is break in case of emergency stuff as a forward from now on.

I have no idea what Neale is thinking... I don't even know if he will be anything more than an average key forward (fingers crossed he takes a big step this year).

Time will tell if the WA clubs come for him. If he looks like he has the goods at stages this year then I'm sure they will ask as he is uncontracted.

I guess I just want him to play good footy and look like a decent long term key position player, then we can take it from there.

If he plays well and stays... great. If he plays well and asks to leave, at least his value will be decent. If he plays poorly then he won't look like much of a prospect going forward and also be worth very little.

Just play good footy, help us go B2B in some way and then hopefully (assuming he looks the goods) re-sign.

I think OH will be a revelation in the aerial aspects, much as Pods was. I know he's shorter, but he's a gun in the air.

Depends on preseason fitness and form. Sav has every right to be peeved if he gets no gametime after Port really wanting him.

He shouldn’t be anywhere near the forwardline .had far more chances than most to secure his spot so I doubt he has cause to be too upset

I think he will for his size (the challenge for ollie is to improve his consistency and defensive pressure) and he is aerially very good. Neale is probably the better pack mark purely because of the reach he has at 200cm but ollie is a very good mark for his size.

Sav is a backup kpd and we kept him in case de koning or henry get injured (as we had to with no other kpd on the list). I doubt he is getting a game unless a defender gets injured and he would know that

I just listened to Danger and JJ's podcast after the trade period and Danger said that Sav is definitely a KPD now. He expects him to play lots of games next year and that he is Chris Scott's favourite player. I think you are still correct about Sav needing an injury to a player to get a game but I think this applies to any of our defenders and even other players. The flexibility of Henry and some of our other defenders mean Sav can slot in at CHB and other players shuffled to suit. Will certainly be a fascinating year to watch how the team evolves. Our current best 22 will almost certainly not be our best 22 by years end.

Very hard to break into this team, backline is no exception.
We struck a very good balance with only one KPD (SDK) , 3 medium talls (TS, JH and Kolo) , Bews, Stanley dropping back and assistance from Tuohy, Duncan and Smith at times. Our team defence was exceptional and made it hard for opposition talks to get quality delivery.

If we play 2 KPD’s the mix and style changes, be interesting how that looks in 2023 when it’s tried.

To be fair, 193cm Kolo plays as a KPD rather than a 3rd intercepting tall like Henry or Stewart, so it wouldn't be that much different in structure if 197cm Sav were to assume his role, for example.

Our structure already is 2 KPD's, 2 intercepting talls, 1 distributor (Duncan), one lockdown (Bews), and one or two off the bench to play a variety of roles (Zuthrie and Tuohy/O'Connor - depending on where Touhy is played and if O'Connor is Best 22).

Sav could cover either SDK or Kolo given his height falls in the middle, and he has an incredible leap, so he's the perfect cover. Not to mention with teams like Melbourne, Brisbane, Freo, GC etc. who will all have 3 talls this season, then we can combat that with a 3 tall backline if necessary.

Gives us a lot more flexibility to change things up when needed, IMO - as we definitely cannot afford to rest on our laurels now that we're the 'hunted' :)

I don't think Ollie Henry is even in the conversation to replace Hawk for the early games. Agree completely on your structure comments regarding Shannon. Henry is to small to play key position. He is 189cms and last year was 80kg. Hopefully this year he has put on a few kg's of muscle but he is still too small. Other options for fill in for Tommy might be Danger or Rohan but that robs us in other areas. Danger would be the most likely as MC may like the idea of keeping him away from onball duties till the business end of the season and it frees up a spot for one of the new midfielders, Problem is that Danger is not a natural forward and has failed there more often than he has succeeded. For the long term development I think it has to be Neale and play him for all of the gmes Tommy is out.

HNY Shadow89 !
Good call on Kolo - he is very versatile as you have noted , I had him as a medium tall because of the 193cm and he plays on Martin/De Goey types but you are correct that he can play much taller.
Oh - and my bad , forgot about Zuthrie and OConnor
The whole team will be a fascinating watch this season , we will be the hunted but at the same time I think the 2022 pennant will give us a license to keep innovating and motivation to keep ahead of the curve :thumbsu:

Henry could play forward while Hawkins is injured. He did have an impact against the tigers.

Taller than the great man (on the left)!

Anyone else think, at the right time, we should talk to Fisher McAsey ex-Crows?

The Crows culture is terrible and in the right environment he could possibly flourish.

After 3 years in the system, he has decided he doesn’t want to be an AFL player. A bit like Tom Boyd. Maybe after a period of time out of the system this changes, but there would be question marks over whether he really has the hunger.

They're the sort of questions the recruiting dept would be asking first up, not to fussed about what they do, so far, the Mackie era has been stellar.

Yeah if I were Sav, Kolo's spot would be the one I'd be hoping for.

I think it would probably help our structure a bit, too. For all the flack that Kolo cops (from myself included at times), he's a decent enough lockdown defender. It's just that he's not quite big enough to take the bigger KPF, and if you're not taking the number 1 forward, I want a bit more offensively. He's a good matchup for someone like Jack Darling, Riewoldt or Mihocek. But can get caught out if he has to match up on the 198cm+ talls. Usually not a huge problem because our defensive structure means he doesn't get exposed in too many 1 on 1s.

Sav would have the size to take the biggest forward, which may allow SDK to intercept a bit more and would also be handy against teams that have 2 tall forwards like Brisbane (Daniher, Hipwood) or GC (King, Casboult, Chol). Although the MC like playing Kolo on the hybrid forwards sometimes (Heeney, JDG etc.), which is something Sav probably can't do. Which means we'd have to shuffle around to get Henry or Zuthrie onto these guys when they go forward.

I'm optimistic Sav can bring something to our defence this year. But I'm not sure he is needed on top of what we've already got. It might be a case of forcing someone out.

In Kolos defence he came a long way in attacking flair last year. It's gone from weakness to middling ability.

I trust him as a defender more than Sav

Great call CatToTheFuture - his PF and GF games were outstanding and very on board with our new game style.
He's going to be very hard to drop if he keeps that going in 2023 :thumbsu:

The Cats are stacked with potential
Giving the Kittens games is essential
But spaces are tight
Team rotation is right
Expanding the squad is preferential

Creative player management is the way to go
Expand the squad from best 22 to best 30
The limited game times the younger player will get this year will be an audition for spots next year with the mass retirements imo
