If we finish with a top ten pick in next years crop I am very hesitant to go after smith… the top ten for next year looks to have an incredible bunch of potentially elite mids that is exactly what we need to invest in.

Would be very hesitant to trade out of that for Bailey smith… would rather take someone like jagga and pass on Bailey smith
Agree, if we're really poor next year I'd rather finish off our midfield rebuild with 15 years of Sid Draper or Finn O'Sullivan rather than Smith.

It does mean we'll be really young, but we can recruit free agents to fatten up the list with some experience.

For instance, Liam Duggan, Ollie Florent AND a top 10 pick is far more enticing than Smith by himself IMO.

We seem to be the only ones who are forced to trade while everyone else walks off and accepts the compo… I hope we make it clear with whoever similar fashion to essendon that if you match we won’t deal… I liked dodoro on that one with Gresham. Would like to see similar with Bailey smith if he requests a trade

Smith is not a free agent end of year so we would have to trade for him.

I am really keen to go in for next years top ten crop if we miss the 8. It is looking so far a very elite top ten group… a lot of midfielders who are underage already avg 25-30 touches a game at TAC or state champs. Exactly what we cannot afford to pass

Things would have to go a lot worse than expected for us to miss top 8.

Exactly how is that the case given we missed the top 8 this season?? I am all for ambition and striving to win, but I don’t see finishing slightly below where we did this season or similar as significantly worse than expected.

a return back to the top 8 for me would be a huge win and show incredible growth and resilience, but I am not taking it to the bank as an expectation or bust

I think you're both right, and I've got a very open mind about what we're capable of next year.

However, on what we know right now, you'd think that for us to miss the 8 next year with a pretty easy draw, development of kids, and full pre-season, that it would have to be a repeat of 2023, where what could go wrong, did go wrong.

Now, our club doesn't deserve sympathy for that, as a lot of the issues permeated through 2023 where caused by negligence by our players, but there were elements of really bad luck, too.

There where points during the year where we had our entire starting midfield out, along with our entire second string midfield. That's not something that happens very often.

Things like SDK & Stanley breaking their faces, Jezza damaging his shoulder + concussion while colliding with a teamate, Stengle breaking his arm, not playing at home until round 6 with limited capacity, having 3 players go down with injury in the first 5 minutes of the season thanks to the 'Ed Sheeran Turf' (Thanks Gil, you've done it again)

These are variables that simply take a huge amount of bad luck to occur. They're not fitness or preparation based, they're just bad luck, and you'd think that events like these would be unlikely to occur two years in a row.

Now, anything is possible. We could have everything go right and still miss finals next year, we don't really know what's going to happen.

But, on what we know right at this moment, you'd think that with a reversion to the mean in terms of our luck, preparation and development will see us shoot back up the ladder in 2024.

The great irony is that despite all of these unlucky variables and negligence on our part, we still weren't that far off the 8. If even 1 or 2 of those go our way, we probably make it.

Thought on the night, and was telling to me that we had Caddy as an option but went with the swingman in COS - and no other key forwards except for the pinch hitting Edwards.

Says to me that Cadman or another KPF is very much a priority next year - and that Smith would only be an option as a FA, rather than with picks.

I daresay us keeping our entire suite of picks (plus our future picks), is in order for us to make a big play at someone like Cadman or similar, to pair with Jez in the short term - and then Neale and Ollie Henry in the long term.

Will be interesting to see what happens next year - much more interesting than this year at least.

It makes sense, and because the spine is such a crucial area of the ground, it fast tracks where we're going immensely.

In a hypothetical world, in 12 months if we have:

SDK - Key Defender
J Henry - Medium Defender
COS - Key Defender
Conway - Ruck
Edwards - Ruck/Forward
Neale - Key Forward
Henry - Medium Forward
Cadman - Key Forward

That's genuinely one of the best young core spines in the game, especially seeing as there's a huge power vacuum right now in the league with key position talent.

If guys like Sav, Petty, Chol, BZT, Sweet, Soldo and so on are being seen as the best available, then we're a long way in front with what we'd already have on our list for 10-15 years to come.

That's with Jezza & Stewart still around for a few years yet as well.

It allows us to go big in 2026-27 with someone like Smith as a free agent to finish off the midfield, which is a much easier area of the ground to develop anyway as quality mids are typically pretty easy to draft or trade in.

Key position talent is much harder to find, and you tend to hold onto them for a long time once you've got them (Hence the lack of supply at the moment)

We would have already drafted all of ours with pretty high picks (Outside of Cadman, who was the highest you can be), and all things being equal, would be set for a very long time.

Liam Duggan just named co-captain at WCE with Oscar Allen :(

I think that is a very plausible synopsis. Midfielders are far easier to come by than quality key position players. To have won a flag as recently as 2022 and get to the 2025 season with a young set of talls that you’ve outlined would be enormous.

I’m tipping though that we are using both 2024 + 2025 first rounders to secure Cadman if he’s up for moving.

Love this post. Out of interest, what makes everyone think Cadman will be joining us ?

Wishful thinking
Yep, because we've never landed a target that seemed hard to imagine years out 😒

I'm not saying it's going to happen, not even saying it's likely....but these things have to start somewhere.

Jezza & Danger where just pipedream rumours discussed on BigFooty once upon a time too.

I think that regardless of whether it eventuates or not we are in a fairly good position going into the trade/draft period. Our core of young players is reasonable but clearly there are holes in both our midfield and for a quality young key forward. If Cadman doesn’t work out we can use our first pick to trade for a mid such as Smith or just hold it and pick up a quality young mid in an apparently heavy midfielder draft.

I would do that deal for Carman in a heartbeat.

Agree, I get the feeling we'll be fixing one of those weaknesses next off-season, just depends on which one.

All comes down to who's available, and who wants to come, which is always hard to predict 12 months out.

Smith & Cadman are the names right now with rumours, but it could be anyone in a few months time. Just how these things seem to play out.
