His lack of form for over 2 years + his knee + his mental health issues are serious red flags.

We shouldn't view someone being open about mental health struggles as being a red flag - that simply gives an unnecessary stigma to mental health battles and that it's somehow a negative to steer clear of

Someone who's willing to put their hand up to say that they've got a problem & they need help is the exact opposite of a red flag, and instead it's something that needs to be encouraged

What would be more concerning is someone who's struggling but isn't willing to seek or accept help, the person who ignores the issues while things continue to build up

Please don’t misinterpret me as being insensitive to mental health issues.

But we should not be naive enough to think it isn’t a warning sign regarding future performance. It just is.

We are not a welfare agency, and we have no obligation to players that are not on our list. If he was a Geelong player I would advocate strongly to give him all the support he needs. But he isn’t a Geelong player, so we need to go in with our eyes open.

It is an exactly the same situation as recruiting someone with a known physical injury. Like a busted knee for example. Which smith has also. Which is kind of my point.

In 2022 he averaged 29 disposals
2023 only 23 and we all know he was pushed to more of an outside player which he didn’t like.
With the pressure of AFL I’d say there would be a massive percentage of players who suffer deeply that we will never know about.
His difference is he was open and honest about it.

After looking at his stats I noticed he’s only kicked 10 goals in total over the last 2 years but in 2021 he kicked 17
That needs a lift, but could be a structure thing at the dogs, apart from
Bont mids hardly kick goals there “without looking into it”

Get your point, but I think Hinkley29 was pointing out that it adds an extra layer of complexity - which I agree with - and requires specialised attention, which requires more resource, knowledge and sensitivity than the norm.

I am thinking 4 years max @ $500k per annum. A pick between 15-20 as the trade.

That is the equivalent of player 15-20 on your list.

I dont think that will get it done.

What would you offer?
My dollars would be higher, I'd go a million a year. I'd go 5 years and our first with something else.

I reckon we will have to pony up to $800k per year for Smith. 4-5 years in length. He has several other suitors / options so the deal will have to be very competitive to get him here. The demand for his services is there.

We clearly have the cap room, he fills a genuine need and we have to pay to get these guys in the door. $800k, given the salary cap increase, is okay IMO.

The day's of getting guys in for unders, given where we're currently at, I think that is over (unless of course we get someone like Danger or Cameron that only want the country / surfcoast lifestyle).

With the increase in the cap, and us looking like we might have a lean period where we aren't competing, we will have to adjust our approach a bit here.

We need to be in reasonable shape when TAS comes in and not be stuck down the bottom without access to high draft picks..

Or if instead of talking about their issues they just take a bunch of drugs

I think we're all over analysing it.

He did one interview where he said he was struggling in his first year with the pressure. It's a non-event

Now, what im about to say....There is 100% some AFL players have mental health problems, can't deny that one bit at all.. But then there are some AFL players say they have Mentsl Health issues, but they use it as a get out of jail card.. Sometimes I question myself when players say they have Mental Health problems, I question myself on if they really do. I just the ones actually have it, get the help that they do, and I don't like how the ones that use it, as a get out of jail card don't abuse that system

Yep, it can be / is abused.

It's easy to do, because no-one is going to call it out.

After his contract finishes. Every chance he requests a trade back home.

We wont have the picks or tradeable assets to get him. Will be another vic club.

The interview about mental health was before the cocaine scandal not after
