Stokes kicked 38 goals in a year as a small forward. Pods was a good 50 goal FF, and lonergan was a good key back.

Not sure how you classify them role players
They played a role. They weren’t players that were either irreplaceable or match winners.

that is the definition of a role player

Pike is not on our list yet (though id like to draft him)

Stanley is cooked
Blitz probably has one more year left as you say
Furphy is a spec you cant count on
Sdk is our full back

Edwards i rate but he will nees years to develop
So realistically our 2025 rucks are only conway blitz and edwards (dev) so thats not enough we have to trade in a ruck this yr.
Pike... is he a genuine ruck? Or a Forward/Ruck?

He took unders.

Good for us I guess.

Would be nice to see him get what he was worth though.

Cest la vie

Which part of the offer is unders?

The 5 years or the roughly $700k per season bit?

The reported offer from St Kilda is $750k per season - so it seems the teams most interested in Tyson, were within the same ballpark figure for the yearly salary, suggesting that $700k is around his worth, especially when re-signing

There's no indication any team was genuinely looking at offers of $800k+ per season, which would give a indication that moving into that bracket would have been considered overs

..

Tyson's not the most polished guy when it comes to the media, but I loved seeing him really light up when the interviewer asked him about Humphries' debut - the chat touches on the fact that Tyson is now one of the more senior men at the club; hearing his genuine enthusiasm for Humphries' progress underlines the possibility that Tyson can mature into a real leader of the club.

Foster hasn’t found any alliances at the club. The older players are insular and stand offish with young players. You can see why the young players haven’t had a look in. Foster will return to SANFL. He’s been played out of position for 2 seasons. Waste of talent. He’s gone. Shannon Neale is the golden boy. Even though he has barely kicked a bag ever.

I certainly wouldn’t delist him this early. He’s had a concussion and since then averaging almost 2 goals a game. He’s shown enough early and is still only 19 and 197cm. Players of that size don’t grow on trees.

Good to see his management went big for the duration and then settled on the $$ side after getting the extra year add on (5th) year for him.

He is set now for the rest of his life ( and generationally really) and good on him.
Last night we saw how valuable he can be and the mose excited blokes have to be Miers and Close as Stengle will continue to draw the oppo best small defender - and they would be stoked about that.

GO Catters

Some might think I am premature in saying so, but I reckon Tyson Stengle already goes close to making an all-time Geelong best 23 as a pure forward pocket specialist.

Depends on how you judge these things though I suppose - you could shoe-horn additional mids or even a 2nd spearhead (e.g. Doug Wade, or 1925 Premiership Cliff Rankin, who seems to have basically played any forward line role the club needed him to play) into any club's all-time Best 23 to ensure the best 23 are represented.

But as a specialist, legit small forward I haven't seen any better than Stengle in the hoops and I don't reckon the club's had one.

Matty Stokes goes very close. Fewer tricks, but played his role in huge games for a long career.

Ronnie Burns was exciting and a match-winner on his day.

But Stengle is top shelf quality; a match-winner who played a massive role in our 2022 Flag run and who has produced a season of consistent brilliance again in 2024. He's got another 5 years to cement his case now, too.

He was a second key forward.

A role player, a very good one but a role player nonetheless.

He went down in the 2011 gf and we were 3.5 goals behind and in danger of of being blown away.

Duncan comes on and we have more midfield run and are able to turn the game. I am not saying that pods wasn’t valuable, but he was replaceable if we needed to.

Im biased because im his biggest fan but that was more that a tall off allowed us to put ottens and west forward more and gave us more run.
People forget 2010 pods was insanely good and for a good block in 2011 mooney was absolutely cooked and hawkins was in the wilderness confidence wise.
Without podsiadly (i still remember him destroying josh gibson in a half the way mannagh is destroying the 2s as we speak) we dont make the GF that year.

Most of his years at werribee he was the best player and definitely the best kpf outside the afl system. He would have had a much bigger career if he was drafted at 25.

Mannagh has kicked 4 goals half way through the second quarter in the VFL. You would think he will get a game somehow? He does kick goals.

If theres any selection integrity he has to but i wont hold my breath. But we are going to have to play him or trade him bc hes not going to sit in the vfl next year and nor should he.
At least the coaches this week have stopped chaining him to the 50 and remembered hes a small mid who can win clearances.
Possibly too late but hallelujah.

On next week no doubt we will rest some guys (esp older ones) with coll the following friday night (no disrespect to hawthorn).
Id go clark out and id manage duncan and put mannagh and possibly henry in (you could manage tuohy as well if you really wanted to).
Obviously the other question will be what we do in the ruck whether stanley comes in or the rucks are saved for the pies game.

Media shy.

Great news with him committing to the club.

Yeah 100 %

Both are fantastic guys who work very hard on their game and are great assets to us-you can just tell they are not comfortable with media at all (fair enough).

Given where the salary cap is going, $700k is unders for a player of Stengle’s quality.

I understand that I am an outlier, but I genuinely believe that Stengle is an elite player.

Elite players get more than $700k.

Good for us I guess

$3.5 million over 5 years works out at around $700k per season

It's the Saints offer which seems to be closer to that $750k per season range

Either way, doesn't sound like Stengle was getting offers of $800k+ which seemed to be the suggestion at one stage
Yep.

As good as Stengle is, I was never confident he net us band 1 comp if he left.

So him staying is absolutely by a mile the best thing for us.

Great news.

I classify role players as those of limited ability who are given a specific task to achieve. Stokes podsiadly and lonergan certainly dont fit the bill.

(aka Mum can we please have Stengle, no we have Stengle at home).
This cracked me up

Agreed, 700k is an elite player in 2019. Salary cap is only increasing.

The one player he can potentially come in for imo is Brad Close who hasn’t been great lately. Mannagh will likely go elsewhere at seasons end and do well, he is a handy little player.

Close only had 10 disposals but was involved in a number of good sequences last night. 5 score involvements, a goal, a goal assist and 6 tackles with his pressure game really strong. He's also got one of the best retention rates off kicks inside 50 in the league, and is really high up there for goal assists.

That would be stupid.
Even if thats the long term outcome we need to play him to keep his trade value up.
And mannagh is a midfielder which last time i checked we are fairly short on.
He can come in for clark or a range of other players.

OFFICIAL!

Geelong Cats star Tyson Stengle has committed to the Club in a new long-term deal.

The 25-year old Premiership player has put pen to paper on a five year contract extension which will see him remain in the hoops until at least the end of 2029.

Onya Tyso. Great for you and great for us.

Is he though? Everything I've seen of him (at Geelong and prior) shows he's more a mid/forward that (at most) dabbles in the midfield, perhaps in the vein of Papley.
So if we were going to draw from our VFL pool to solely fit a mid role, I'm not sure he'd be at the top of the list.
