Not all that relevant to us, but Goad looking like a big bolter tonight:

Taylor Goad (South Adelaide, ruckman)
Adelaide is shaping as a strong chance to land Goad – and it makes sense. Reilly O’Brien is 28, Kieran Strachan is the same age and a back-up, while 21-year-old Riley Thilthorpe is being used primarily as a forward. Goad would give the club a next generation ruckman with enormous potential. But if the Crows really want the ex-basketballer they may need to swoop with their top selection (10, as it stands) because of apparent interest from Melbourne (11), Sydney (12) and St Kilda (13). Rival clubs will not be surprised if Adelaide takes him at 14 – if he gets there – because the Kangaroos (15, 17, 18) also like him and are in need of a ruckman. It is doubtful he is available at the Crows’ third selection at 20.
Reflecting on NEEDS. If West "Toast " wants Curtin they need to ask North for pick 2 and 3. or other offerings. Nth Melb has to replace McKay so they need a Key Back. Hence Curtin. Then additional best mid. Haw probably are after a goal kicking small . Hence Wiz Watson. Alternatively Hawks may consider a Key forward or Key back. Therefore Caddy or Curtin. Bulldogs require a Key Back. So I can't see them needing Watson ahead of a defensive tall. Watson must be elite but because he is tiny I wouldn't be surprised he is overlooked in top 10 selections. Curtin meets Bulldogs needs. Melbourne already have key backs so a midfielder or outside runner to meet needs. Melb have a couple of Key Forwards from last years draft and Van Rooyen. GWS have good defensive players and may require outside runner. So what are Geelong's NEEDS ?. Another ruckman like Reid would be great but a bid will be matched. From many posts read and allowing for needs. Curtin will be gorkski. Watson not needed. Caddy or O'Sullivan as key position players are my guesses for Cats 1st round selection.

I've already come round to him, because he's who I think we're most likely to end up with tonight.

Fact is, we need a KPF for when Hawkins finishes up this year and Cameron follows suit in 3-4 years. Means we take mostly mids and KPD's with our remaining picks, which I'm more comfortable with at the backend as well.

Warhorse I think you were saying that he grew to 195 at the combine? That's pretty much Curnow/Jez height, so perfect height for mobile tall KPD. Only 18 so could yet grow even more to true modern KPF height at 196-198+.

Caddy measured 192.9cm at the combine, there's an article about it with him saying he was "spewing" he couldn't get the extra 0.1cm.

I previously thought he might be a bust, but since learning more about him I think he has a ton of upside. Had a fractured fibula through the preseason, then missed the first champs game with chicken pox. Despite all that, he had a pretty good year. Would be happy to draft him.

Not to mention his good pedigree:

"There is a VFL/AFL connection within his broader bloodlines, from his mother Tania’s uncle Robert Dean (Collingwood and South Melbourne), Saul’s uncle Michael Reeves (North Melbourne and Fitzroy), and Caddy’s cousin, Ned Reeves (Hawthorn). He is also the nephew of dual Richmond premiership player Josh Caddy."
Dwayne Russell will have a field day with all that info.

It's all well and good to discuss "needs" of teams, but generally clubs (not picking F/S, academy or whatever other provisions) will go Best Player Available early in the Draft.

Filling specific needs is more so done in late 1st to 2nd round area where teams can accept obvious flaws with players so they can fill a position.

Earlier in the draft you're looking at getting as much elite talent as possible and figuring out the rest of the pieces on your team to fit around those selections. Geelong just could afford to go Clark last Draft because

1. He was a local
2. They could go for need over BPA using someone else's pick (Gold Coast), it wasn't Geelong's pick.

West Coast are picking Harley Reid to be their guy for the next decade at least. They don't give a shit about his role/position.

Ah okay, not sure where I've got that other measurement from then, haha. 194-196 still seems possible which would put him in Curnow/Jez territory - which I think is who he most plays like. Bit of Jake Stringer to him too (prime Dogs version rather than washed up Dons version).

I hope we pick up Cooper Simpson at 25 as well - as I think he's got the most upside of any speculative pick, and he's a very 'Wells' pick.

Big fan of Simpson, though it's sounding like he might be available at our later picks.

With our first 2 picks I’m going with Caddy and then someone that hasn’t been mentioned on here.

Holmes and Dempsey to a lesser degree has a penetrating kick. Knevitt does not but he gives an excellent marking option coming out of defence.
He's an inside mid IMO, he just isn't big enough right now, but I hold faith that he'll be our next Joel Corey.

It's always a slow burn with these huge midfielders who come in skinny, as it takes so much longer to build muscle. He's another year or two away from dominating on the inside, but the patience will pay dividends IMO.

So much so that it's a meme in the gym community that guys 6ft+ can lift weights for years, and never really look like they've done much of anything.

Compared to someone who's sub 5'11, who can build up their chest, shoulders and arms and visibly look stout within a few months.

As you say though, his marking is a huge asset, and he could rest behind or forward of the ball when he needs a break and be a real weapon for us.

Look ive got no idea who the Cats will go for , because im not into or got no idea who the supposedly best players are , bar Reid and Curtin , because there has been alot of media about those 2

But in the past Wells hasnt minded heading to SA and Tasmania to add to the cart before going to the Checkout , i mean half of our 2007 Premiership team were South Australians , so it has been a lucrative hunting ground for Geelong

And i read on the weekend , their are 2 highly rated Tasmanians , i dont know where they will slot into teams picks

Another potential move if Curtin is taken early would be to trade 8 for 9 plus 31. Adel will come for 8 to try to secure O’Sullivan. Bombers want the same player? If we could get Caddy plus 31 then we just gain an extra earlier draft pick for nothing.

Alternative is to deal with Adel and take 10 plus 20 - to take Wilson - both talls will be off the table by then you’d think.

Think the Dons are keen on Caddy so trading back to them will cost us Caddy.

In saying that though we potentially could double trade back if we are sure the Dons want Caddy and Adelaide want O'Sullivan.

Trade 8 to Dons for 9 + a bonus pick... Dons take Caddy.
Then we are on the clock with 9 and trade 9 to Adelaide for 10 + a bonus pick... Crows then take COS.
We then have 10 to take Wilson or whoever and have added 2 bonus picks.

Very Blackadder move.

I’d rather just take Caddy tbh.

I would only trade back once. At least would still get one of Caddy or O'Sullivan. Wilson a big step behind.

You will find most clubs will take best available in the top 10.
