Hi Catters, thanks for stealing Bailey Smith off us, son's crying now...

Obviously deal will drag out with pick swaps and stuff by the end of it, but just wanted to get a feel how highly rated Mitch Knevitt is? Is he an untouchable, developing nicely for you and not going anywhere, or could he be potentially included in a deal plus pick(s) for Bailey? I see he is contracted still till the end of 2025 so obviously would have to be ok with the trade also and looking for a fresh start etc.

Thanks!
Not untouchable but you need to convince the player. I think his work this year has been disappointing but also we sent him out to tag or sent him to play wing in horrendous conditions etc so I'm not writing him off like others.

Don't know that the club would say no to trading him but also don't think they'd drive it

Has a bit of Macrae and Dunkley about him.
Solid overhead. Can play multiple positions.
Not quick or will hurt you with his possessions but certainly an interesting prospect slowly developing.

Really a question mark as of this stage.

And don't forget our coaches is an intense and very driven kid and he knows Geelong will get the absolute best out of him. Look what it's done for Stengle / Tuohy / Cameron / Dangerfield / Mannagh / Ollie Henry and others.

Tuohy was a very good player at Carlton

They were dead set nutters low balling him in their contract renew offer and basically forced him out

Unless there was genuinely a very limited future for them here, yes.

In those situations we'd be talking to the player where we advise that situation and that they're open to look at their options

Any trade would still be on them instigating that aspect of things

With respect, I don't think anyone really cares too much about the 'brand' as such, and if anything breeds membership growth, it's premierships. Geelong is not hurting for money in any way, shape or form - and with the soft cap, extra coin doesn't really have a huge impact on the team's fortunes.

It's the return off the ACL, and Smith's state of mind that I worry about. Prime Mitch Clark at Melbourne was an excellent player in a terrible side, but beset by injury and mental health difficulties, he struggled at Geelong.

So I have reasonable but not OTT expectations, and somewhat bated breath.

All the more reason to come to a Club with excellent medicos, rehab and culture, with players who thrive in a contemporary, exemplary,+ fellowship based (Costa) community oriented environment. Coastal lifestyle mentioned. Team mates of similar age. Coaches who won't drive you into the ground, or undermine mental health in any way.

Worst kept secret is right- we've had ages to get this deal underway. Who's to say we haven't quietly been upping the value of Parf, Knevitt, Bews etc.

As for value, I think I'll trust a Club who took Selwood at Pick 7 with a dodgy knee, and got Jonno through his crippled years.

Except you can't say he's fringe. That's others who haven't had AFL games this year. Cats rate Knevitt, but he has to wait in line like many before him, and be happy being signed. You'd be surprised how many are satisfied with that dotted line.
Happy to hear other people's views and acknowledge there would be differing opinions on Knevitts worth but why can't I say he is fringe? He is literally a fringe player. He gets some games, he is the first to be dropped, plays as sub etc, he is on the fringe of our best 22?? We can have varying opinion on how we rate him but I don't think it's up for debate that he is on the fringe of selection?
He played 8 games last year, only 4 this year. Humphries, Mannagh, Mullin, Dempsey, even Jhye Clark have been picked ahead of him this year.

Okay fair enough, he's fringe.
About to be cut.

Moloney was in the 22 and had been pretty much all year.

Knevitt has played all of three games. He's very much expendable if that lets us keep our 1st round pick.

I'm not sure Maloney had actually cemented his place but he was certainly highly rated and on his way. From memory Josh Hunt and someone else (Can't remember who) where also floated. At any rate, that was kind of my point, Knevitt is more expendable than Maloney was and we were happy to make that deal.

I do think there is an element of Zach Guthrie or Andrew Mackie to Knevitt. Those guys weren't built for AFL when drafted and took a bit of extra time to develop AFL bodies. They were worth the wait though and I think Knevitt at least could be as well but there's a bit of water to go under the bridge first.

The first comment I made related to his playing credentials. People are seriously selling him short in terms of pure football ability.

Everything else he brings is a bonus - but my point was that it's a seriously big bonus and I'm not sure everyone has quite got their head around the impact off field that will result.

Joel has spent a bit of time with him over the years and it's been suggested that having our former captain as a mentor was part of the appeal in coming to Geelong. And I'm sure Geelong have done their due diligence.

I think we offered Caddy up for Deledio before losing out to GWS and then our hand was forced when Caddy decided he wanted the pay check he was gonna get if he was traded.
I reckon that was a bit of an ambush by Richmond. The club refused to consider letting him go then after Richmond got in his ear he chose to leave.

I'm sure it was the same on our board re: Tim Kelly but the Dogs board already has the "Geelong will screw us! Send him to the PSD" commenters

Caddy's older brother was a former teammate of Gale's - they met up at a grand final function that year where he used it as an opportunity to introduce his younger brother Josh. Gale goes back to work the next week, passes the information to their list management team who then get to work

That's what kick started the move

Knevitt is a very polarising player on this board, that is for sure.

There is a group of posters that have written him off totally, almost from the moment we drafted him.

Then there is another group of posters that think he needs to play inside mid to be a player.

Personally at AFL level I see him playing the same role as Dempsey.

Use his running capacity to be an option on the open side and then drift forward to take a grab / kick a goal.

Like Dempsey I don't think he fancies front on body contact much to be able to play inside with the big bulls at AFL level.

So there is nothing online saying Smith to Pies?!? Or was that just some reporter making a bold claim on no real source.

Just had a look over there, they are not happy. "Salty" doesn't do it justice. A few of them even wishing multiple ACLs on him, which is pretty low IMO.

A whole lot of them wishing the Cats fall down the ladder too... :tearsofjoy:
