The AFL introduced free agency at the end of the 2012 season, giving players another vehicle where they can transfer from one club to another. Free agency is a common form of player movement in major football and sporting codes around the world.

Considering that Essendon has Draper contracted, and they've just re-signed Goldstein for a further season, maybe the soon to be 23yr old could have itchy feet and be looking at his options where he could potentially see a more open path to the #1 ruck role
 

CATS SET TO BOW TO DANGERFIELD DEMAND ​

Patrick Dangerfield will secure the two-year deal he wants at season’s end despite the rarity of a 34-year-old winning a multi-year contract.

Dangerfield has been keen to sign a deal of that length but is in no hurry given the priority is his premiership campaign as Geelong captain.

The Cats and his management are happy to wait until the post-season so he can show to the club his body is durable enough for him to win a multi-year deal.

While Dangerfield is not on the lucrative figures that he was when he crossed from Adelaide he is happy to have the security of that two-season contract.

Dangerfield arrived at Geelong happy to take less money than offers in Melbourne and while the Cats eventually traded for him instead of securing him as a free agent it has been a riotously good deal for both parties.

If he decided at the end of next year to retire he might walk away from the 2026 sum but when fully fit Dangerfield still seems at the peak of his powers and in no hurry to call it quits.

Most players of his age would sign a procession of one-year deals but 31-year-old Mason Wood just signed a three-year deal at St Kilda.

Dangefield led the charge in the qualifying final against Port Adelaide and has added explosiveness to a Geelong midfield that coughed and spluttered at times in the mid-season form slump.

Dangerfield missed four games with a hamstring issue in round 2 and then eight weeks after a round 7 concern but has played the last 12 games of the season.

He is in exceptional form and continues to lead from the front as he attempts to chase a second flag and his first as Geelong captain after taking over when Joel Selwood retired after the 2022 premiership.

Veterans Mitch Duncan, Gary Rohan and Rhys Stanley are still out of contract and while they have been in regular talks with the Cats all decisions on their futures will wait until the post-season.

Tom Hawkins, set to be overlooked by the Cats for Saturday’s preliminary final, has already announced his retirement from football.
 

THREE CLUBS WHO COULD POUNCE ON UNWANTED BLUE ​

Carlton midfielder Matt Kennedy is yet to test the market after a frank conversation in which the Blues indicated he would be free to pursue a trade.

The big-bodied onballer is contracted next year and is seen as most likely to be at Ikon Park but opposition teams will now begin to ask the question whether he is better off in their midfield.

While the meeting with Carlton was honest, Kennedy has not been pushed out the door.

The former Giant is much loved within the playing group and his wife Mary-Anne has equally become part of the Carlton family since Kennedy joined the club at the end of 2017.

The Blue was subbed off during a miserable elimination final loss in Brisbane, which came just two days after the birth of son Theodore.

Kennedy, 27, has played his best football as an inside midfielder but with Carlton searching for more speed and dynamism around Patrick Cripps and Sam Walsh, he has been pushed outside clearances.

He averaged just 2.1 clearances a game in 2024, his lowest mark since 2019, and kicked a career-best 16 goals as he spent more time forward.

Kennedy was one of just three Blues — alongside Cripps and Nic Newman — to play in all 24 matches this season.

Kennedy does not yet have a landing spot, should he seek a trade, but clubs such as North Melbourne, Geelong and Collingwood are searching for more inside grunt to add to the midfield this off-season.

Interstate, Adelaide and West Coast could use a big body around the clinches.

Blues defender Lewis Young may scour the market for more opportunities, despite having a contract that rounds until the end of 2026.

And forward Matt Owies remains unsigned despite being keen to stay at the Blues, as Carlton weighs up renovations to a list that is expected to challenge for the premiership next season.

The Blues cut Jack Martin, David Cuningham, Caleb Marchbank, Alex Mirkov and Dom Akuei last week.

Like so many terrific players…

Could they treat him like Danger? One only has to look at his vid to see high level package of talent and skill. A bit older but a bit like Rohan …if you added him for nothing ..anything that was gained would be a bonus. One could imagine that if fit .. he could be a difference maker in a big game

There was mutual interest a year or so ago, no idea what the situation is like now though..

To me he looks like he’d be a good stop gap for 2-3 years when Duncan retires. Playing a half back/wing type role. Can float forward.
 
Duncan , 2e sort of replacement with the ability to go forward at times. left and right foot and not afraid to lay a bump.. plenty to like. Maybe you get 3 games from him , maybe you get 40…it all about seeing if the club can do better at keeping him fit. Im always scptical about thinking you get something much different that what has been shown but has he ever really played in a strong side? Can it be worse than som others we have rolled the dice with?

He is a play now type ..and as we have see with plenty of others players ..if it works we get a boost like with like Mangh and Hump..its how we have managed to game the system.

I've seen one article today linking us to Kennedy as he's an inmate inside mid and we could look to add depth in that area

It's mentioned in the second of two articles I posted earlier

You missed SDK in 2019 and Holmes in 2020 - really, since 2014 our first-round picks have been pretty good. Cooper Stephens the only real blunder, with Georgiades taken two picks later.

Losing Jordan Clark wasn't ideal but we used that pick on Conway so it might turn out alright.

Pick 15 gets the 15th best player in the draft (in theory at least). Pick 25 DOES NOT get the 15th best player, it gets the 25th best player, who is clearly worth less. How the 24 players before that were taken is irrelevant, the point is that they WERE taken before then and so are clearly rated higher than whoever is available at pick 25, at least by the clubs that took them.

If the pick is pushed out by FA compensation or priority picks, those are not tied to specific players, they're simply picks in the open draft and the clubs holding them will take the best player available at that point... which is one less available player for us at pick 25. Which makes our pick that much less valuable.

If the pick is pushed out by F/S, it's because someone has bid on the F/S prospect presumably because he's the best player available at that pick. AGAIN taking a player off the table that we then don't have the ability to pick at 25, AGAIN making pick 25 less valuable.

It's pretty simple.

FA and priority picks you can say affect your pick but F&S and Academy ones not really

Below is purely an example

Geelong has pick 15 before any academy/ F&S picks

Crows bid at pick 2 for Daicos and then pick what ever player at the pick once it is matched Geelong's pick is pushed out to 16

Freo bid at pick 6 for Ashcroft and pick another player again Geelong's pick is pushed out to 17

Add 3 more players for F&S and academy bids and Geelong's pick is now out to 20.

That is 5 players taken off the board that Geelong was never going to be able to pick which leaves them with the best available at that pick what ever it be 15 or pushed out to 20/25/30 it doesn't matter.

In no world was any top 18 F&S or Academy pick actually on the board for anyone except the team who they are the F&S from or an academy player for them.

N Daicos was only ever going to Coll, JUH (due to bullshit) was only ever going to the Dogs, Ashcroft to Bris etc etc they were never on the board.

Now due to the way matching works early picks get pushed back but later picks can come in a lot depending on what picks are used to match.

Either way the whole draft system needs an overhaul or it is fast becoming pointless.

How they could fix or at least un-**** the draft somewhat has already been stated in this thread.

1 get rid of FA compensation
2 stop giving priority picks for clubs ****ing up and let them sink or swim
3 adjust the DVI for F&S and Academy players so you actually have to use good picks to match
