Ask and we'll try our best to assist - so here's 2024 Provisional AFL Draft Order

As normal, would like to acknowledge & thank Lore for creating this, keeping it up to date and making it available for all users on BF to use and keep track of the picks ahead of the upcoming draft

I'll also sticky this post to ensure it's easily accessible for discussion of our hypothetical trader

Also,

2024 Free Agency Period

The AFL introduced free agency at the end of the 2012 season, giving players another vehicle where they can transfer from one club to another. Free agency is a common form of player movement in major football and sporting codes around the world.

Free Agency Opens: Friday October 4 at 9.00am
Free Agency Closes: Friday October 11 at 5.00pm

Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period

Trade Period Opens: Monday October 7 at 9.00am

Part of me hopes he has 12 touches in round one just to see your reaction.

It would rival Warhorse with Bruhn.
When he is a cats player I will be a supporter and hope he is great.

I am offended that you compare me to warhorse. That is uncalled for.

Good to see Bulldogs fans still in denial

They aren't happy with a Herald Sun article from today and have decided, "**** Bailey", the club shouldn't even bother with a trade and just walk him to the PSD where he can play for the Eagles or Richmond, especially as whatever pick Geelong offers won't be worth accepting

They seriously don't get that he nominate for the ND and not the PSD. Plus, if the club took that approach and decided to not even entertain a trade, both the AFL & AFLPA would step in to ensure that Smith isn't left in limbo due to his original club cracking the sads

The bulldogs have one of the worst draft hands this year, so they definately won't let that happen.. It also gives us more leverage...

Unless we can pull the proverbial rabbit out of a hat, then I reckon Jake Stringer is the closest possible ''beast'' type list addition for the 2025 season.
He'll turn 31 as the 2025 season starts. He managed 23 games this year.
I know the rap.
But if managed well both on and off the field then he's capable of making an impact at any club.
He's just as likely to go completely missing though, of course.
I'd probably have more confidence in Stringer having some sort of an impact for the club than Jack Martin, who has done sfa.

Think Stringer burnt his bridges with us last time… I cant see the club willing to endure the pain for the gain… but as a player I get your point.

I'm also finding it funny how don't realise that if the Bulldogs simply refuse to negotiate any trade for Smith, that the AFL & AFLPA will step in for meditation between the parties and with through a deal

So many seem to think that the Bulldogs have all the power here and they'll be able to dictate what happens with Smith, or that if Smith is forced to nominate for the draft, other clubs will happily select him with an early first round 1 - that sort of shit just doesn't happen which they don't seem to realise

There's some seriously delusional folk if they don't realise that in reality, it's the player who has the power now days and not so much the club

Well done, they'll now fight for 4 pages and the rest of us will have to read about it.
I just hope one of them has more than 12 posts, just so we can tell them how shit they’re and talk about it consistently for 3 weeks just to feel better about myself

Never mind that 10 of those posts were actually factual and to the point.

It's all about the TOF (Time on forum) for mine.

If you extrapolated those posts over the course of 3 hours actually on the forum, he'd be reaching 30 consistently!!

The big reason why George Stevens didn't set the VFL on fire is most likely he didn't play in his prefer position in the midfield.. Lets wait and see how he plays when he gets his chance playing there.
Fair enough.

I'm happy to admit I didn't get to watch a lot of VFL this year, I'm just going off his stats (poor), commentary from people who did watch more than me (not much better) and the fact that with all the midfield analysis going on in here over the last couple of days his name has barely been mentioned if at all.

But if he can step up to that sort of power mid role at AFL level, fantastic. Solves a big looming problem for us.

Just give him time. He did finish 6th in the club bnf so that's a good effort 👌 in his 1st year

Do kids not have normal names any more?
Not sure 🤔 I don’t think so, as our first grandchild was named Malachi.
But my mum whose is 89 and her English is not the best being an immigrant from the Balkan’s many many years ago still can’t get her tongue around it.

To be fair, if someone said that about Geelong as they walked out the door I would think he was a complete tosser.
Apparently brett goodes who has now worked at both WB and geelong, has said privately behind closed doors that the culture at geelong and dogs is so far apart it is not even close. That geelong is such a better run and managed club from executives down to coaches.

I would say most of us would laugh and say, “ok yeah sure mate go elsewhere and good luck finding a better run club”
The difference is if players leave us majority of the time it an “oh well it is what it is” and we know it’s rare they are gonna do better elsewhere.

I think that list of guys who succeeded or did better after leaving the Cats is like Jordan Clark, Linc McCarthy, Shane Mumford and Lachie Fogarty…I guess you could count Hambling but he’s playing VFL every week so no real loss. Sav hurts Port more than helps them and isn’t any different to the guy we tried to persist with and it failed multiple times. Fort is getting a Grand Final gig because Big O got hurt, he’d be stuck in the VFL like he was at the Cats otherwise.

We lost the best player of this generation and still gave him a standing ovation when he returned in opposition colours. That’s the vibe, that’s the difference. We don’t boo former players we just accept that’s the nature of the business.
And he returned home to the same praise as if he had never left either. Got to retire in the colours he was born to wear.

The booing former players thing has never really been a Geelong staple. Whether it’s the “Cats Home games are quiet cause it’s a bunch of old ladies watching their local team” vibe or the fact that Geelong has been majorly successfully for most of our collective lives that we trust the club will do what is necessary to replace said player and not get hung up on it. I’d say we are very lucky. There’s no real chip on the shoulder because the club has done soo well for soo long by us that we as a supporter base don’t really have any right to question how things are done.

And to give examples of Cats management turning a negative into a positive

When TK left we replaced him with Jez 🏆

When Gaz Jr left we replaced him with multiple guys to fill the next generation of players that Gaz eventually rejoined with anyway. ✨

When the stars of our original Premierships got old like Chapman and Stevie J and they moved on, we replaced them with a generational ball winner in Danger. 💪🏼 ⚠️

We truly are a lucky fan base to support such a wonderful club.

Except Leigh Colbert. **** that guy.

I’ve heard this a few times now. What exactly did he do to us last time?

I have heard multiple variations of it but the general gist is this.

  • Cats pursue an interest in seeing if Stringer was an option to join the Cats
  • Stringer and his agent agreed to meet with the senior Cats management and especially Stephen Wells who was headlining the pitch to him
  • Stringer was supposed to meet with Wells and senior management at the club at a certain time and Stringer turned up over an hour late and didn’t even apologise, basically showed a lack of interest or care for the meeting. Kind of like he felt entitled to run it on his terms…
  • As you can imagine the Cats were not thrilled with this, especially Wells who barely ever gets upset or angry and had gone out of his way to pump up the kid and set up a big tour of the facilities and a sit down meeting.

Lines up with a lot of the timeline of him leaving the Dogs and joining the Bombers.
I think the line jotted out to the press was that we, “couldn’t justify paying the price that the Dogs wanted”

But I’m sure someone else may have heard differently.
I’ve heard a few versions of it.

What's the list look like?

As in our list of rivals?

1. Hawthorn…Piss and Shits are a well run organisation and we respect them like they respect us…but also respectfully **** them and I hope their little Dingley facility is filled with trash from the dump located there.

…………

Keep Going ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️

………..

2. Collingwood..many Finals games against each other and because well, it’s Collingwood.

………..

DAYLIGHT, at this point it’s not really a rivalry with teams below this point.
This is the Cats are living Rent Free in your head zone ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️

3. Basically anyone that is a MCG tenant like the Tigers or the Blues.
Colours change but they’re all equally annoying.

………..

SOME MORE DAYLIGHT, more Tall Poppy Syndrome

………..

4. Non Vic clubs that we’ve played a lot in Finals like Port and Lions

…………

5. Minnow clubs like the Dogs and Saints, basically irrelevant to us and to most people.
