Well we've got the game on January 3rd. And what a perfect time to have it as many people are likely to come down the surf coast area camping for the Summer holidays. Expect at least 25,000 or more. A packed out K' park would be superb
Very, very happy to be proven wrong on that one!

In the definition/design stage at present.
If funding can be secured look for roughly 2019 build

Just how much is it going to cost? Surely the cost of the place must be getting close to non return on investment. Building another players stand will make it look a more finished place but will they sell all the seats?

Stage 5 will be cheaper than Stage 4, as it's just concrete and seats, no new TV, no coaches boxes or media boxes, just a copy of the players stand. It will also include a light refurb of the hickey stand, and has been quoted at $80m I think.

In December 2016 it was estimated Stage 5 would cost $90m. http://www.krockfootball.com.au/geelong-cats-news/stage-5-cost-90m/

Stage 5 will include new facilities for cricket and they are mooting it will take capacity to 37,500-40,000.

From the modeling I have seen, the only way 40,000 can happen is will a 3 tier stand. There were renders on the net many years ago showing a 3 tier stand at the northern end. Maybe the 2020 World Cup renders???

By the time all the planning is done I'd say it'll be over $100m.

3 tiers behind the goals... Please NO.... its too far away and the seats will never be as good as the wing.
Too much spent on the stadium already..and a duplicate of the players stand will be hard enough to fill imo. The should have found a way to move the ground so the could have a duplicate of the Brownlow on the M wing.. or perhaps they should have just built a new stadium along side it and kicked StMarys off. 100M dollars..

Agree.

There is/was plenty of room in the precinct to house a new stadium away from Moorabool St, St Mary's Sporting Club, Geelong Cricket Club, Kardinia Netball Association & the pool.

like asking for Duncan ....

Victorian 2018-19 state budget: Cost of Kardinia Park redevelopment set to rise

http://www.geelongadvertiser.com.au...e/news-story/f59e5cb4d14b1db51c17ef381a0e0ee0

As the link is paywalled I will cut & paste.

GEELONG is hopeful construction work on the final stage of the GMHBA Stadium redevelopment could start in less than a year.

But the stage-five project is now expected to cost $100 million, up $10m on the $90m estimation last year.

The final stage, which will replace the Ford Stand and Gary Ablett Terrace, is the subject of a $3.9 million business case being carried out by the Kardinia Park Stadium Trust about the need for the final stage.

The document is expected to be handed down in the coming weeks.

The Cats have previously indicated the majority of money for the city-end makeover is likely to come from the State Government.

Should funding be secured, building works could start at the end of next football season for a 2020 completion.

The Kardinia Park Stadium Trust, which controls the ground, is now responsible for securing the funding.

Preliminary drawings have been completed and final drawings are said to be in the process of ticked off.

The new stand will increase the capacity to 40,000 and included a “heavy concentration” of cricket facilities, regional administration offices, a cricket training academy and planned office spaces to cater for a Twenty20 team in the national Big Bash League.

Some standing room is expected to be included in the final design.

“That business case will be going to government in the next four weeks and we’re hoping that it will receive a positive answer from the State Government after that point in time,” Geelong chief executive Brian Cook told Geelong’s AGM.

“We're hoping that will be in the Budget for next year. The cost is now about $100 million to finish off the stadium, so it is a huge job. Another big (redevelopment) like this one ($91 million Brownlow Stand), so it’s replicating that over there.

“That will complete the stadium and ... then I think we can argue strongly for the Essendons and Carltons and the like to come down here.”

Asked when building works could start, Cook told reporters after the meeting: “If all goes to plan it will be knocked over by (this time next year), after the season finishes”.

“It’s really important that only two pre-seasons and one main season is construction time, otherwise you lose two years (of use) in that whole area.”

The State Government did not specifically address the $10 million increase when questioned yesterday by the Geelong Advertiser.

“We’re getting on with the job of turning Kardinia Park into the best sporting stadium in regional Australia,” Sport Minister John Eren said.

“As always, we’re working closely with the (Kardinia Park Stadium) Trust, local clubs and community to ensure this iconic ground remains accessible and open to all.”

so we have had four stages of development now and the capacity is still largely the same as when i was kid back in the early nineties.

Governments pissing our money into the wind.
The difference now though is you can get out in big crowds and have a piss, back in the late 50s and early 60s it wasn't common for bloke to just piss where they stood but it did happen you just couldn't get out.

Try being a kid in the early 80's and you might appreciate the work a little more.

lol pissing in the stands. And some people think the fifties were more civilised.

Saw some footage of the ground last year from the 60s with no Hickey Stand. It looked awesome. Some trees over hanging the ground. As if it was from a dream.

Wish we could rip all the stands down once a year for a round dubbed standing in the outer round. But sans the pissing. There would be to much spray back off those sharp grey gravel stones on the outer.

I appreciate the work as a teenager in the early 70's. And the only growing that I have done since then is all horizontal. It was bloody hard to see anything when the ground was packed out for a big Carlton or Collingwood game.

Got to admit i miss sitting in the Cypress tree city end, but love what we now have!

Anyone else sit on the very top of the fence Moorabool St side.

Love the memories.

Never sat on the fence but my fave spot was leaning against the bar sort of where the opp cheer squad sits now.
Gotta good view of the Great Man when he was down that end.

Still was happening in the 80's. Especially wet days for some reason. Before the GA terrace the city end was just a hill and I saw it happen multiple times...once I started to go with the other half .. I decided to get seats in a stand. In the 50's and 60's ..those big finals where it was over 100,00 all standing ..I have been told plenty of coke bottles were kept on hand because... as you say..they could not get out.

And ... is it about time for a rename of the thread to the Alphabet stadium? ie GMHBA... etc dazbroncos ..
