I wonder when they build Stage 5 if the rip a few rows out on the wing to make it wider... the ground risks being a joke. or should I say a punchline to a joke.

Turbocat did you ever get a look at the old Hawthorn ground at Glenferrie?
That was a skinny ground.

1 bloody metre combined. Chump change in the scheme of things.
It's still bloody skinny regardless

You're right.

Just 1 metre, so chump change as you say, but still, it's a further erosion of an already skinny ground that is already sabotaging us and therefore a metre further in the wrong direction.

lol what?!? Turbocat
Ground risks being a joke? It's been the same dimensions since we moved in during the 40's yet somehow now is a possible joke.

Um. How?

I am reasonably sure that the ground was shortened to build the original Hickey stand at the Southern end of the oval.

Missing the point entirely.
Jeez.

It's been skinny since we moved in but .5m each side is just a step too far.
Blimey.

Isn't it only for the remainder of this season not necessarily a permanent change - at seasons end they (the club & the AFL) will review the signage situation and next year the dimensions will be back to the extra 1m width

Missed you post somehow ...

I think the two previous posts almost made a joke about it... benign that they were.. I feel its only a matter of time before the size will be questioned as being inadequate..especially if we continue to fail on the G in big games. Rab mentioned Gleferrie...its dimensions probably belong to a previous era. It would put us in awkward situation considering the money that has been spent.

It’s a bloody cop out. When we were the best side we never had a problem at the G but suddenly now the ground is the problem. It’s an excuse because we’re not good enough.

Who is using as it an excuse? No one is excusing Geelong because they have a different shaped ground. I do not think anyone at the club will be using it as an excuse. If you are good enough you can win on a cow paddock . I feel it will be something that is brought up and mentioned and used as a humour device ... unless we win away from KP.

Questioning the dimensions being inadequate. What a cop out.
The ground has been here since the 40’s but now the dimensions are suitable for us because we lose on the G. We lose because we’re not good enough, not because we have a home ground advantage.

Wasn’t a setback when Gaz would turn up and kick 14 v the Tigers...

My point was it ..it risks being used as a joke fodder ..it was narrow enough as it was. Now it is being narrowed even more... in spite that it conformed to the afls 5M rule. I also wondered if it means that down the track they would look to widen it some how.

It is simply incorrect to state that the ground has been the same dimensions since the 40's.

I think we all feel that ship has sailed with the latest redevelopments. It would have been nice to have the foresight to widen it even just by five metres or so like Adelaide Oval did when they rebuild their ground, or how the SCG lengthened theirs so the 50 metre archs were actually 50 metres. At the end of the day it is what it is, a quirk of the game that makes it interesting to watch.

Game is better on skinny long grounds. Less chip kicking side ways and more ball movement through the guts. All grounds should be more like geelongs.

Its not often I will say it .. but I totally disagree with you.

Right now with the way the game is played .. id love to see them play back at VFL park to see how the game would look. It was huge that ground..love to see them try to run back and forwards on that thing..it was huge

It was Huuuge!! Made for better footy IMO too but I guess its subjective.
Waverly had those massive pockets for the forwards to lead into, also I remember you used to get heaps of one on one contests out on the wings which made for fantastic footy.
Zone defenses and clogging space would be far less effective there.

Hopefully this post works.

Rumours that Club is strongly pushing for a GMHBA home final if we play an interstate side. Seems fair to me, but if we play Sydney it should be at the MCG (will be a 60k crowd, plus they play the ground well).

Kardinia Park and Geelong Performing Arts Centre in line for dual project funding worth $230m

SHANE FOWLES, Geelong Advertiser
September 21, 2018 12:00am

THE Andrews Government has revealed it will complete two major infrastructure projects in Geelong, if it is re-elected in November.

Labor has committed to the $102 million fifth and final stage of the Kardinia Park Stadium redevelopment, which will increase the venue’s capacity to 40,000.

In a double-pronged election pledge, Labor has also revealed it would spend $128 million on the third and final stage of the modernisation of the Geelong Performing Arts Centre.

Both initiatives are contingent on Labor being returned for a second term at the November 24 State Election.

Premier Daniel Andrews said his party would deliver the finishing touches to the city’s vibrant arts and cultural precinct and its premier sporting venue.

“We’ll finish the job we’ve started — transforming GPAC and Kardinia Park into the best regional facilities in Australia, delivering jobs, tourism and top-level sports and events to Geelong.”

The election promises come on the back of the Government’s allocation of $153.2 million towards Geelong’s City Deal in its 2018-19 Budget.

Labor has stated that work on the northern stand end of Kardinia Park would start after the venue hosts World T20 cricket matches in late 2020.

Construction would not finish on the substantial build until 2022.

The project would create:

A NEW 14,000 capacity two-tier northern stand to replace the ageing Ford Stand and Ablett Terrace;

NEW Geelong Cricket Club social rooms and cricket facilities;

NEW unisex change rooms and facilities to allow more professional women’s sport; and,

NEW media and loading facilities, providing better access for drop-in pitches and major concerts.

The final stage of GPAC’s transformation would also start in 2020.

It would provide a 500-seat drama theatre, a new 250-seat courtyard theatre, a new black box theatre, an outdoor atrium, more dining options and an upgraded box office.

The $128 million project would cover around two-thirds of the site, with most of the work focusing on the Little Malop St side of the building.

Construction would stretch into 2023. Labor said it would support about 600 construction jobs and more than 300 ongoing local jobs in the tourism and service industries.

The commitment comes as work continues on the stage two Ryrie St redevelopment.

The $38.5 million project is creating a new Ryrie St entrance, universal access to The Playhouse, new rehearsal and dance studios, a new foyer and bar areas.

That work is expected to be completed in mid-2019.

I don't get down to Geelong all that much these days but do we have a Vibrant cultural and arts precinct now?
