Where did I say the midfield isn’t terrible

WORST means WORST

‘Mr Mitch McGovern is worth a top 5 pick or 3 picks inside 26 ‘

‘and is worth twice as much in a trade as Jake Lever’

Now that Mitch is a failed forward playing same position as Jake we can laugh at that quote alot this year

I don’t listen to you do football - enjoy your jibes but that’s it

Amazing.

So much “I” too

Let's just check in to the center bounce attendance stats for some other teams:

CBAs for players drafted in the last 4 years (>5 CBAs)
Noah Anderson - 21
Matt Rowell - 19
Thomson Dow - 18
Caleb Serong - 18
Sam Walsh - 17
James Rowbotton - 17
Zak Butters - 17
Chad Warner - 14
Tom Green - 13
Max Holmes - 13
Tanner Bruhn - 13
Josh Ward - 14
Jason Horne-Francis - 12
Declan Mountford - 12 (top-up player)
Jye Caldwell - 11
Jai Newcombe - 10
Jack Ross - 9
Tom Sparrow - 7
Tarryn Thomas - 6 (injured early)
Errol Gulden - 6
Curtis Taylor - 5

Schoenberg - 16 (that's it for us)

Things that stand out to me:

  • Hawthorn gave their pick 7 from last year 14 CBAs straight off the bat
  • Sydney managed to find 31 CBAs for Rowbottom and Warner despite being a top team
  • West Coast top-up Declan Mountford wasn't even on a list a week ago and had more CBAs than our pick 11 midfielder Luke Pedlar
  • All top sides from last year managed to find a spot for a young midfielder except Brisbane and the Bulldogs (Melbourne, Port, Geelong, Sydney, GWS and Essendon all did). Us finding a spot for one player is no better than top teams who are stacked with talent
  • GWS have a stacked midfield but gave 26 CBAs to Tom Green and Tanner Bruhn
  • We had by far the least amount of CBAs and CBA rotations given to young players of the teams around us last year, except for Collingwood
So on average, there might be 30 Centre Ball Ups each game. 13 goals to each side and the 4 at the start or each quarter. This allows for 120 total CBAs for the team, 30 of which require a ruck. So 90 CBAs to share amongst the squad. Now it seems pretty obvious that this year is going to be a struggle regardless of who attends those centre bounces. While we probably need to play Crouch, Sloane, Laird etc. as I think we do actually need some experience and bigger bodies on the field, can I suggest the following:

O’Brien/Strachan: 25 CBAs
Thilthorpe: 5 CBAs

This ensures that over the last 20 games of the season, TT attends 100+ CBAs. Great experience for him and throws him right in the midst of play - getting him involved. 90 CBAs to now share between midfielders.

Crouch: 25 CBAs (~80% game time). He literally has to play in the middle as he is unsuited to any other position. So that leaves 65.

Keays: 15 CBAs. At least he can runoff a wing/half forward the rest of the time he’s on the field. So now we’re down to 50.

Schoenberg: 15 CBAs. He’s had a torrid start to the year, but we need to keep pumping games into him. 35 to go…

Pedlar: 15 CBAs. Again, he needs as much time in the middle as possible. Just give it to him. 20 left…

Rachele: 10 CBAs. He looked damn good in there and can only improve with further exposure. 10 left…

The remaining 10 go to any other young kids we might be looking to develop or Sloane/Laird if both Crouch and Keys aren’t in there.

As for Sloane and Laird, we move Sloane permanently up forward to run out his career. Laird moves back to the backline. Dawson and Scholl should never be in there as their outside game is too damn good. Meh. Works for me.

16 min mark of the third, Keays with time running on the half forward flank has a player loose inside if he lifted his eyes, instead he passes to the Pies player in front of Fog.
There were a couple like that. I recall Keays being on his own directly in front...same thing happened.

Sloane can hardly run, what forward pressure will that give us when they have the ball? SFA

Yes he can only play in the middle, but nothing says it has to be in the AFL side
While I wouldn’t now cry if he were dropped, I still think he has a fair bit to offer and has been one of our best in the first two weeks. I do think that the young guys need a bit of guidance and protection out there… and I think that Crouch offers that. Is he the elite mid we hoped he would be. No. But he’s still pretty damn good… he just has those 1-2 kicks each game which leave you crying into your beer… or laughing… cry laughing… it’s how I spend my time watching most Crows games nowadays.

I don't get the "Crouch can only play midfield" comment. He is an accumulator like a Keays and is actually pretty good above his head. Both of those guys along with Sloane should be played off the HF flank. It's one of the hardest positions for a kid coming in, yet we love to put them there. It's where our accumulators should play and they are told to use their eyes and experience to show the team how to deliver into the forward 50. If they don't it's back to the SANFL.

Sure. Certainly not opposed to it. He doesn’t scream forward flanker to me but it could work… we’d just need to try it… as opposed to continuing to try the exact same thing that hasn’t been working for the last few years.

No, this is stupidity. It’s the weakness that results in refusing to identify individuals to improve the team. Our midfield is shit, every component is fair game in terms of needing to be improved upon. Otherwise you end up like Jeffcrowe, who also accepts its shit but outside of dumping Sloane, there’s no other available improvement.

Ben is ok, but he’s exactly the problem whilst being as good as we want him to be.
Surely it’s time to give Hately a run of games , at least he’s conditioned and fit enough and playing well as a MIDFIELDER at sanfl trial level

I’m still shaking my head at us playing Pedlar forward in the sanfl , how is that going to help him become an AFL mid

He can when he's not injured, HF for Sloane and Keays with sports in the middle. Laird back to HB and swapping with Jobea in the middle. Leaves a good chink of time for Pedlar, Berry, Rachele, Jnes and even FoG, /McHenry to be played through the centre and build experience.

For all those that say we have tried, most of these guys have been given a quarter here and there but that's it, never consistent time in the middle.

I don’t understand why we don’t ply Sloane permanently off a HFF. He is a hard nut who is strong over head and quick with his hands. He is also usually a very good set shot for goal. And he tackles hard.

The one thing he lacks is pace which means it will be tough to have a forward line with Tex, Fog and Sloane in it.

But according to the doyen that is Jeffcrowe , we can’t remove any minutes from Laird, crouch or Keays. So, hopefully your elite mids are awesome half forwards.
Ohhhh more made up stuff , you forget my last 2 exchanges with you conveniently ?

I’ve said many times over to you that we need to push more numbers through the midfield .
That actually requires less minutes out of keays laird M crouch

I also said M crouch recent game and its ineffectiveness puts him at risk of not playing or being part of plans

It’s funny as my midfield strategy is similar to yours , we are going around in circles because you want to make a scene

Only you know why

Similar to Milera, he looks way unfit and should have started the year in the SANFL. He not only missed all of last year but he started his preseason late due to surgery.

Looks like he's lost a lot of strength in his core, hence the constant falling over.

I was right too. Now been confirmed it was 5 years, 800k - you should be embarrassed thinking someone being offered that contract was worth less ;)

So you’re standing by your comment that Mitch McGovern is worth a top 5 pick ?

Remarkable

A failed forward on his last chance saloon as a intercept defender

What ya think his next contract will be worth ? 800k- 1M + per season ?

Ps how do you think Lever went last year ? As good as Mitch ?

I said you should be embarrassed. Not that I thought you were self-aware enough

How could I possibly take your opinion on a Fogarty seriously when you think Mitch McGovern is worth a top 5 pick in a trade

And still standing by it

Anyone here would think you’ve lost your marbles

But you’ll find a way to deflect
