True. You get on a roll, anything can happen.
The Dogs got on a roll in 2016; Richmond in 2017. They made it happen.
Usually the Flag goes to the team playing their best footy come Finals (by a strange coincidence they are often ex-VFL teams for whom the MCG feels like home).
Sometimes, the reverse applies. The Crows pinched the 1998 Flag from fifth after losing their first final to Melbourne by around 9 goals . The team they beat, NM, were on a roll and had won 11 consecutive games up to the GF. Ignited by adrenaline, NM came out on fire and burned themselves out by half-time.
Anyway, I asked "How many teams make Finals after 3-8? How many go top?".
The teams you quoted from 2023 were not 3-8, nor did any of them go top. Close, but not. Those 3 are contending again. A Sydney/GWS GF is possible.
Hardwick re-invented himself under the leadership of Peggy O'Neal. Can Nicks do that under Olsen and Silvers?
I'll be as happy as anyone if we make Finals and win a Flag under Nicks, but I can't see it unless he changes (reinvents) his attitude to senior players and try-hard scrappers of low game impact and rewards performance, not reputation.
P.S. while I'm on a roll, the 1998 Crows had the stingiest defence in the Comp. and the best %.
Nicks' defensive mindset/plan is clear, but he jumped the gun in 2024 assuming we'd make finals, underestimated the loss of Rahilly and 'def-ended' us to 0-4.
Mate, I'm an old fart and am desperate for the Crows to get another Flag before I kick off.
Desperate.
Can the 2024/25 Crows get on a roll and make that happen?
I hope, but I look at the last 4 and a bit years and I just do not believe. I'd love to be wrong.
