PICK 26 - North Melbourne - Lachlan Cowan - 188cm 81kg

STRENGTHS:
  • Athleticism
  • Consistency
  • Intercept marking
  • Leadership
  • Long kicking
  • Rebounding

IMPROVEMENTS:
  • Short kicking
  • Versatility

Cowan’s upside is obvious from the outset. His athletic traits, size, and ability to hurt the opposition are all desirable traits which club recruiters will love. While there is still some polish to add, he has a base set of skills which put him within the top 30 range as a defender whose offensive offering suits the way the game is headed. * rookie me central

Up next Blackhawk42 with Hawthorn

Pick 27 - Hawthorn selects Charlie Clarke.

Write up to follow shortly.

If there is one thing the Hawthorn rebuild is currently lacking it's arrogance and mongrel. Combine that with tackle pressure and goal sense and the future up forward looks bright. Clarke will form a dangerous partnership with Sam Butler for the next 10-12 years, making defenders sweat on their every movement.

West Coast Write up

Instead of telling you all that Phillipou is good above his head and that Burgiel runs really fast, I figured I would go through my plan before the draft began. With 4 picks inside the top 30, my ideal makeup of those 4 picks was as follows:

2 Midfielders - we don't have a midfield
1 Tall - Kennedy just retired and Darling will in the next few years
1 Miscellaneous - could be a small forward, rebounding defender or another midfielder

My draft board for pick 9 was 1: Phillipou 2: MacKenzie 3: Clark 4: Busslinger

With pick 9 West Coast selects Mattaes Phillipou

I've been a massive Phillipou fan all year and the main reason I rated him highest on my board for pick 9 was his incredibly high ceiling. After splitting pick 2, I feel that we should take the risk and reach for the stars with this pick. I rate MacKenzie really close to Phillipou and would have been happy with him instead.

Knowing that Busslinger wouldn't make it past the Western Bulldogs my draft board for pick 13 was 1: Ginbey 2: Hewitt 3: Hollands

With pick 13 West Coast selects Elijah Hewitt

Taken as the best available midfielder here. I wanted to take 2 midfielders with our first 2 picks as it would give me the flexibility to be able to target players in any position with our picks in the 20's.

I really wanted a tall with pick 21 so my draft board for this pick was 1: Barnett 2: Keeler. If both players were taken before 21 I would re-assess.

With pick 21 West Coast selects Isaac Keeler

With an all mighty roll of the dice, we've gone and taken 2 of the riskiest high ceiling players in the draft in Phillipou and Keeler. More than happy to take that risk because if it pays off we could end up with an elite list rather than a middle of the road one.

After taking 2 mids and a tall, I wanted to take a genuine small forward with the next pick. However, I would be happy to take another midfielder. Draft board for pick 29 1: Clarke 2: Allan 3: Burgiel

With pick 29 West Coast selects Coby Burgiel

We lack pace and I can see Burgiel playing a high half forward role for us at the next level. Didn't end up with the genuine small forward type, but Burgiel is a good consolation prize.

I like it. Nicely done.

Will we end up drafting like this? Probably not- We’ve not drafted too many “high ceiling” types in recent memory. We do like our safer higher floors/lower ceiling types.

If there’s any time to take the risk- now is it. They are all going to get a crack early on.

With Pick 31, St Kilda select Mitch Syzbkowski. He works well for the Saints, we might be going a bit midfield heavy, but it’s a bit talent first, worry later. His strength and agility, capped with his clean hands, are bound to help out Steele and co in the middle next year and beyond.

With pick 32, Carlton select Darcy Jones from Swan Districts.

Height: 175cm
Weight: 67kg

A midfielder by trade, he uses his small size to his advantage when hunting down the ball on the deck or off of his ruckman’s hand. He thrives in the contest, using his speed and agility to get first hands to the ball and evade would-be tacklers as if they were cones in a training drill. He shows great composure and vision to take on challenging kicks to put his side in the best possible position to score. He pairs this spatial awareness with his speed when on a fast break to create an option for his teammates on the outside, always looking to get the ball forward quickly to score. He possesses an incredible vertical leap, which allows him to make a strong presence in marking contests against taller opposition.

STRENGTHS:
+ Acceleration, accumulation, agility, consistency, run-and-carry, scoreboard impact

IMPROVEMENTS:
- Kicking on the run, size

And that's the guy I was hoping to trade up for. Good get.

PICK 33 - North Melbourne - Ethan Phillips - 196cm - 90kg - DEF

After a trade with willowtree and fremantle north have this pick

There seem to be few more readymade key defensive options around the country than Ethan Phillips, the winner of this year's Fothergill-Round-Mitchell Medal. The Port Melbourne defender was in contention to be drafted out of the junior pathway, but has emerged again as a prospect at 23-years-old. The Borough backman was resolute across 15 VFL outings this season, putting up ridiculous intercept numbers as the standout young player in the competition.

Phillips' game revolves around intercepting, a crucial part of modern day defending. He averaged a whopping 11.5 intercept possessions and 5.1 intercept marks for the Borough, also getting his fist in for 3.7 spoils per game. Needless to say, he proved difficult to get past with such astute reading of the play and commitment to the aerial contest. Plying his trade against AFL-listed forwards in the semi-national state league, his efforts were well under the eye of recruiters.

The mature-ager will look to become yet another Fothergill-Round-Mitchell medallist to enter the top flight directly after taking out said honour, and his skillset offers arguably much of what is required to be a tall defender in the AFL. Having built his frame and become established at a high level, Phillips is now more ready than ever to make the step-up. *rookie me central
