Geelong: The Cats had a strong preliminary final to beat Brisbane by 71 points, winning every quarter to record their 15th straight victory. Patrick Dangerfield was irrepressable through the midfield, having 28 disposals, 8 clearances and 2 goals whilst Tom Hawkins and Tyson Stengle kicked 7 goals between them inside 50.

Sydney: Sydney held off a fast finishing Collingwood to get through to the Grand Final by 1 point, leading the game from start to finish. Midfielder Callum Mills was fantastic, collecting 27 disposals along with 6 marks and 5 tackles, with small forward Tom Papley kicking 3 goals, the best on the ground as Sydney shared it around.

Geelong defence vs Sydney forward line

Geelong conceded a goal 22.07% of the time it entered their defensive 50, which is 7th in the AFL for 2022. Sydney kicked a goal 24.75% of the time it entered their forward 50, which is second in the AFL for 2022. Expect impressive young tall Sam De Koning to take superstar Lance Franklin, Buddy kicking 4 goals against the Cats in their only head to head matchup this year. Jed Bews and Tom Papley have had some interesting battles over the years, but the Sydney small is a big game player and expect him to get up for the Grand Final, his best could provide the match winner for the Swans

Midfield/rucks battle

Geelong are 4th in the AFL for contested possession difference in the AFL this year, whilst also being 5th for clearance difference. Sydney are now 6th and 9th for those particular statistics for this year. The key battle will look between Callum Mills and Patrick Dangerfield, the Swans midfielder having been the best two way midfielder this season and the Geelong superstar desperate to add a premiership to his name. The Swans will support Mills with James Rowbottom, Luke Parker and Chad Warner whilst the Cats will use Brandon Parfitt, Cameron Guthrie and Joel Selwood as Dangerfield's support crew. On the outside, expect young duo Dylan Stephens and Justin McInerney to challenge Isaac Smith and Mitch Duncan with their speed and dash, who's experience may be vital for the Cats to control the game between the arcs. Rucks wise, expect Tom Hickey to challenge Rhys Stanley as the main ruck, whilst Hayden McLean against Mark Blicavs will definitely favour the Cats athletically.

Geelong forward line vs Sydney defence

Sydney's defence has conceded a goal 21.66% of the time it enters their defensive 50, which is 4th in the AFL for this season. Geelong's forwards have kicked a goal 24.09% of the time it enters their forward line this year, 4th in the AFL. Tom Hawkins is one of the toughest match ups in the AFL but he struggled against Patrick McCartin early in the season, only kicking the 1 goal in their only match up for the year, whilst brother Tom kept Jeremy Cameron goalless which will give the pair confidence that they can do it again on the big stage. Small forward Tyson Stengle will have a tricky match up with the speedy Nick Blakey, who can really turn it on against the Cats as well the other way.

X-Factor Player

You can't help but think that this is the moment for Isaac Heeney, the medium forward hasn't delivered greatly in finals so far in his career but after a career best year it will be his chance to stamp his authority on the competition.

Key stat

Geelong: Clearances. The Cats best way of scoring has always been from the stoppage and it's little wonder why when you bast Dangerfield, Selwood and Guthrie in the side.

Sydney: Goals per inside 50. Sydney must kick a score for them to win this match. They do have the size advantage up there, they need to use it.

Tip

These two have had an incredible unbeaten run this season. Geelong just keep defying the odds with their age but I have Sydney winning by 8 points, Chad Warner for the Norm Smith

I think if Sydney jump Geelong like they did Collingwood, they will be hard to beat. Also if it's wet.
Sydney also usually match up well against the cats (won the only match-up this season).

That said, I've seen a lot of Geelong this year ( brother and a few mate's go for them) and this team is just smooth, class and Scott worked out to get them moving instead of chipping it around so often.

Due for a loss ? I don't buy that shit.

I think Geelong get up by 3-4 goals.

Like them or not, Geelong have been that much better than anyone this season...and I want to see Parker shattered just once more this season.

Geelong by 175 points, game called off at 3/4 time due to the mercy rule.
Hawkins a lazy 10 plus.
Buddy kicks first point and goal.

I think Sydney started to run out of legs in the last quarter and with fighting for the result till the last minute, would have taken a lot out of them. Meanwhile the Cats cruised through. Add the way Geelong performs each week I'm going to say Geelong by 26 points.

Reid is a big structural loss for Sydney. Forward, relief ruck, going behind the ball when things get tight, he's very underrated and no surprise Sydney were so strong through the back 2/3 of the year when he was fit.

Cats win by about 3 goals I reckon.

Geelong are alright. Their gamestyle ever since I’ve been watching has always been purrrrre and they have had some of the purrrrrest footballers I have seen play the game such as the Abletts. Hope they win in a close one for the neutrals.

They were the first team I hated though. My first ever game, live, was round 22 1981 when they ended our 16 game unbeaten streak during Sheeds first year thus also ending our top 3 aspirations and a second chance. Cried all the way home in the car.

I was 43.

Jake Kelly is representing Essendon in the grand final sprint 🤦‍♂️ Isn’t he one of the slowest guys on our list 😂

Never change Essington
