aside from round 1 where he came on as the sub, he's been serviceable all year. he was a little off touch in his first month but the effort was there, (considering he played no pre season games) since then really i don't think he's really done much wrong. please stay fit now, as it's a delight seeing him back to his '13 form.

Blanketed Brodie Smith in the Showdown, had no influence whatsoever

will always be one of my favourites for THAT BOUNCE

There was a pretty cool backstory with his centering kick that found Wingard with seconds to go in that game. Back in 2005, his debut season there was a remarkably similar moment against Hawthorn where it was pissing down with rain at the MCG. That day, Gus tried to be the hero going for the snap from the almost impossible pocket rather than pulling it back to the hotspot where they at least stood a chance of marking it or getting the crumbs from the spillage. He put it out on the full and rightfully copped a bit of a barrel from Hird. Eight years later and he was never going to make that mistake again. Not only did he center the footy, but he was clever enough to centre it backwards 25m which is almost counter intuitive in that situation. As a defender in that situation you naturally converge to the goal square and as luck or smart positioning would have it there was a couple of our blokes holding back in the perfect spot.

i'm pretty sure there's a clip on youtube called monfries goes hollywood or something

One thing about Gus is that his form tends to peak against the very best opposition - think of the games he played against Hawthorn last year, and the 7 goal haul against Geelong in 2013. Macca19 has pointed out recently that he also seems to rise to the occasion when the chips are down. This has definitely been the case in the last 3 weeks.

I don't usually think he is a great set-shot for goal from difficult angles/distances, but he does tend to nail the ones he should. He also converts truly when the team really needs it most.

His strength as a lead-up marking half forward was vital on the weekend, as was his forward line pressure and creative handball.

I've said before that it might be a blessing in disguise that free wasn't paid. Gus can't kick 55 metres. At least this way he didn't spend all preseason thinking that he'd cost us a Grand Final by inevitably failing to convert the shot on goal that would have resulted.
I was surprised on the weekend when he put one through from about 50m. He must be working on it.

i just think he was restricted last year with his body in regards to kicking. his hammy's & hips were an issue all year, it's why he was struggling to kick 40 at times.

Although not the biggest night with the ball in hand for Gus, he did a superb job on Robert Murphy. Note that with about 7.5 minutes to go in the first quarter shit-for-brains Shaw and dickhead Brereton discussed how the Bulldogs would be loving the match-up because they thought Murphy would have a great rebounding night.

In 2015 (before tonight), Murphy had been averaging:
15.4 kicks - 10 tonight.
6.1 handballs - 2 tonight.
21.5 disposals - 12 tonight.
3.4 marks - 2 tonight.
2.5 I50s - 0 tonight.
4.7 R50s - 1 tonight.
2.5 one percenters - 0 tonight.
17.2 effective disposals - 11 tonight.
14.9 uncontested possesions - 8 tonight.

I noticed he was also telling Murphy all about it in the last quarter too. He's a lot more aggressive and tough than a lot of people give him credit for.
Must be an Essendon thing, just like Hardwick most people hated him when he was playing again us.

Gus has always been lippy, when he was playing for walkerville as a junior, after kicking a goal against a good friend of mine, said friend had fallen to the ground, so gus rubbed his head into the turf, Gus ended up with a broken nose. But I'm sure it was worth it they flogged us.

This is made so much better by looking at your avatar afterwards...

Love Gus. Should've been a Port Adelaide lifer.

But you know, we chose to reach for a guy we then refused to play.

Would've been delisted circa the Primus era along with Salopek, Ebert, Pettigrew, Surjan and the rest of the promising talents that we managed to have playing worse football in their mid 20s than when we drafted them as 18 year olds. Angus got to the club at the right time. He also left his old club at just the right time.

Surely he plays this week, surely he is a much better footballer than a couple we have running around, at least when he gets the ball it ends up with a port player. He's courageous and that covers a few more of the players who are getting games.
