Seeing some players being signed to Giants for the VFL team in 2024, we'd better start a thread to collect those signings!

That is a relief, has Leake shown much in his first game?

Hasn’t had much of an impact so far. Has been playing midfield starting attacking side at centre bounces.

Derkson has done a really good job on Hamling so far.

I hope Wade Derksen gets to debut in the AFL this year. Has been waiting since being picked in the 2022 mid year draft - games like this will only help build his confidence and case for inclusion

Final thoughts on the game.

Jones: struggled to convert in front of goals but his possessions have impact and will be back in the AFL side soon
Cadman: tough conditions as a key forward but too good for this level.
Derkson: had the better of Hamling but will struggle to get a game in the AFL due to the key backs ahead of him
Fonti: serious talent and stood out as our best back on the day.
Cumming: solid player but didn’t she enough today to warrant a spot in the AFL side
Keefe: would give him another 12month contract. Such a good infield example of the effort expected and has the experience to slot into the afl and do a job of desperate. Wouldn’t cost much.
Smith: he will be a giant at years end. Second game of VFL as a 17(?) year old and was the dominant ruck
Delana: nice moments but not a huge impact across 4 quarters

Don’t disagree that Angwin has to come out but if cumming pushes Angwin out then who goes out for cogs, Perryman and possibly Jones?

Perryman would be a straight swap for Angwin and then Cumming has to push out one of the mids. Ward/kelly/callghan/green/Cogs/Bedford or XO who has been playing well.

Kingsleys word in he presser on jones game today was “electric” and that’s what exactly how he played. He was easily best on and was very good.

Checking the advanced stats, 2 thirds of Darcy’s possessions ended up in scores…..2 out of every 3 times he touched the ball!!!

Agree. I’d play him as a sub though… when the speed comes out of the game he is even more damaging. More importantly, he’s come off a decent hammy injury… his second one in not that long. He needs his minutes managed… we need to protect him… the most significant predictor of a hamstring injury is how many, and what severity, hamstrings the player has had before.

Fair point. Got to keep the team balance too. I think there is a difference between where he is at and where Cadman was at. Cadman had had a clear drop in output whereas Thomas is getting better as the season progresses.

GIANTS VFL coach Wayne Cripps has assessed some of the starring performances in Saturday’s VFL win over the Swans.

GIANTS VFL coach Wayne Cripps has sung the praises of several young GIANTS after impressive performances in the VFL on the weekend.
Overcoming a slow start, the GIANTS stormed home in wet and windy conditions to beat the Swans by 14 points at Blacktown on Saturday.
Keys to the victory were the performances of a host of the club’s best emerging talent, with key forward Aaron Cadman

Fonti, taken with pick 44 in last year's draft, once again showed his dash and dare off half-back as he finished with 23 touches and a brilliant running goal to continue his push for an AFL debut.
“It was another really solid performance from Joe,” Cripps said.
“Obviously he kicked a nice goal on the run, but he just gives us such good drive and overlap and his ability to join in our attack and keep supporting our attack is first class.
“But probably the most pleasing thing, as a first-year player and a first-year defender, is just how much he values defence. He’s getting better and better in that space each week and he’s really starting to show those AFL traits and he’s starting to hopefully bang the door down [for AFL selection].”
His recent draft class teammate Phoenix Gothard (20 touches, one goal) is also building a strong case for AFL consideration after another impressive outing.
“Late in the third term we moved him into the midfield because we thought he could give us those fast feet and a bit of a different look and he certainly did that,” Cripps said.
“He’s another one who is consistently having impact on games for us now. First-year players can go in and out of form a little bit but he’s consistently playing solid footy week-in and week-out.”
Meanwhile, speed machine Darcy Jones (15 touches, 2 goals 5 behinds) put his name firmly in contention for an AFL recall after a stellar return following a month out with a hamstring injury.
“Darcy showed what he can bring our team at both levels [AFL and VFL]. He’s just got that electric turn of speed on ground level and getting back to goal. If he had kicked a little straighter he could have had a really big day out with seven shots on goal.
“But the most pleasing part was once that ball hit the ground, his step-in and his pressure ended up creating a lot of perceived pressure on the opposition as the day went on and he forces you [the opposition] into turnover.”

who played his first game in over 400 days following his rehab from an ACL injury.
“It was great to see ‘Kenners’ [Kennedy] return. He’ll probably admit he felt a bit rusty out there but he found the ball and he got involved in our handball chains and defended really well,” Cripps said.
“More than anything it’s just great to see him get back out there and get through it and he’s only going to get better for the run.”
After Saturday’s win, the GIANTS will next head north to Queensland for a clash with the second-placed Southport on Saturday at 11:05am.
