I don’t even know what we’re talking about anymore but Lyon says Harley says he didn’t think he was ready. So he’s either telling the truth or he’s not ‍♀️
Lyon says. :thumbsu:

That's my point.

Keep building him at Peel I say. He is no good to us this year. Extra time at Peel will build more strength and longevity in the calf

If we play him early and he does his calf everyone blame the S&C staff

He can be a shrewd obfuscator. Or an infuriating one.
Or just sounded a bit tipsy. Couldn't remember what day it was, who were the players added to the team this week were, "Ballantyne....Ballantyne....Hill ...you'll be able to help me, who else?" what the Dockers position about being asked to try the new rules was, and so it went on.

So the essence of this argument is that RTB is lying about Bennell not playing?

Bennell is a gamebreaker so why would Ross delay him playing?

Not playing him is not going to help Freo and therefore RTB
Tanking is not effective nor a culture enhancing strategy. Also Hilly looks underdone so why play him if their tanking?

I'd rather Bennell played out the WAFL season if it increased his AFL games next year.

Assuming the alternative is him playing AFL and popping a calf, losing all faith in himself right as he comes up to an off season away from the support networks and chucks it in

Seriously why would he lie?

I don't understand the thought process here. What is gained by lying?

Ross is seemingly one of Bennell biggest backers.

Why would anyone lie?

Has the club always told the truth and been forthcoming with information?

Does he play WAFL with a set of different calves than the pair he plays AFL with?

Do you honestly believe Harley proactively walked into Ross's office on Monday and said 'I'm ruling myself out Ross. I want to play another game at Peel mate. I need to improve my football, please don't consider me for selection'? :drunk:

Don't have an issue with not playing him if he's not right or ready. But call a spade a spade.

Still, don't see why he can play full midfield minutes in the WAFL but can't sit in a forward pocket for 60% game time.

What would happen is that Webber would look at his GPS numbers and other key stats (e.g., # of sprints) and compare them to targets. He'd assess how Bennell was the next day (perhaps with an MRI thrown in for good measure) and get feedback from Bennell. Then, as a collective (sports scientist, player, line coach) they'd arrive at a verdict.

Quite possibly Lyon's involvement was a brief phone call to bring him up to speed.

This is what I'm getting at.

And would Webber be setting these hypothetical targets for a midfielder or for an AFL forward pocket position? You can justify anything depending on the outcome the club or somebody wants. Harley is no certainty to be offered a contract and deserves support to play.

I should think that because there's a strong rehabilitative attitude being adopted the targets would be based on what he's achieved in the past balanced against what they think he's capable of achieving (adjusted for the calves and being several years older).

Specific small forward metrics such as burst speed, repeat sprints etc would be secondary considerations at this stage I would have thought.

I don't think our plan is to bring in Harley to sit in a forward pocket - hence why he's not playing there at Peel. If he's playing, I'm expecting us to play him in his ideal mid/fwd position. He's still building and nowhere near his best but he looks so much better than he did last year imo. And I think a lot of that is us playing him on ball a lot. I wanted to see him this week as well but I can see why it was a borderline decision. One more game at Peel and then come in for the derby and play some time on ball for the remainder of the year. If we just dumped him in a forward pocket like last year I'd be annoyed personally.

That makes sense. So if Harley wasn't meeting these hypothetical targets while playing and regularly getting in the best player mentions in the midfield for Peel that perhaps these targets were either being met, or not being set as per your reasonable thoughts above? The Club has history in doing this with Harley.
