Coach Has Ken Hinkley Been Found Out?

Norths 2010-19 Era under Brad Scott sort of reminds me of Ports side under the coaching of Ken Hinkley.
Very similar. Both made prelims, but never won one. Scott only got 2; Hinkley got 4 to date I think?
Scott never had an equivalent to Rozee/ Butters/ JHF though. I think the Port list was better over the journey than North's in Scott's time, in overall terms.

Good summary, and you're right about the mixed views. A few of us have taken to saying Brad was a good coach "until he wasn't". I would say the "wasn't" started around 2017-18, especially with list management. But many more North supporters were off him well before that. And he was very poor in 2019 (you might recall round 1 ...)
So he started being shit at around the same time as Ken, got sacked, had a few years off then found another gig.

Meanwhile at Port...

Ask north melbourne fans on their opinion of bad Scotts time at North melbourne coach, there will be mixed views.

From an outside view....

I think Brad Scott was a solid coach at North melbourne when he coached them from 2010 until mid 2019. I could understand why they Kept him for so long. North Melbourne couldnt afford to bottom out in that period. Saying that, despite Norths finances or lack of it, North were a competitive mid table side.
Brad Scott was not solid, he is no Dennis Pagan. Pagan was unbelievable as a coach when North Melbourne were on the verge of essentially folding (merging) in 1996 to win the premiership, and then to go to 2 grand finals and win again in 1999. I'll never understand defending subpar coaches like Brad Scott or Ken Hinkley.

Average coach you mean, since he never bottoms out but never succeeds either.

Yeah, I've debunked this a number of times, Sydney and Geelong never bottomed out and won premierships, not sure why you keep using that excuse when there's plenty of examples that disprove that theory.
Port are the little brother club in SA living in the Crows shadow.
Crows are a far bigger club.
Hard for Port to attract top end talent.
Port's got many All-Australian players, it's obvious their management are the ones failing them. Collingwood in 2021 finished 17th, then they switched management and won a premiership only 2 years later with the same list.

Why? Port have poor management, this was 2018 all over again for Port where they get left over players, get wins early on, then miss finals just at the end of the home and away season.
Collingwood are the biggest club in Australia, not really fair to compare them to Port who are quite small in comparison.
That's a decade ago, then he fell off, he never won 2 finals games in the same finals series after 2014, I don't know how that should give any coach the ultimate grace period, especially since Port had won a premiership and been to 2 grand finals only the previous decade.
Mark Williams squads had far more talent due to being assembled from Port's AFL entry concessions.
Everyone says they underachieved by winning one flag.
No, a great coach is a premiership coach, not best ranked 3rd place at the end of finals in 11 seasons and counting. They had 2 home preliminary finals and lost them, there's nothing Hinkley can do more, he's not capable of winning an AFL premiership as coach when he had the best opportunity twice to do it.
Ken has been great for Port but he should be given a farewell game.
Buckley got a farewell game as did Brad Scott.

Q: What do these coaches all have in common?
A: They all won no silverware after being coach at one club for a decade.

Then why aren't The Crows making finals and winning premierships? Why are The Crows in their biggest finals draught of 6 finals series' missed, likely soon to be 7, surpassing Port's 5?

And yet, Collingwood were abysmal until they change coaches. They should have been winning premierships every single year if all it takes is a large club that can easily get the best players.

Then why didn't The Gold Coast and GWS win premierships due to their excessive entry concessions?

You wouldn't be calling him great had he coached Collingwood for 12 seasons without a grand final appearance.

Yeah, subpar coaches with bad upper management not holding them accountable.

Why didn't Freo win flags with their entry concessions? Wht didn't gold coast or gws? If they were entry concessions why did it take until 8 years after to win one?

Please tell us, in detail, about all these concessions and how they won us a flag 8 years later? Our initial list was stocked with loads of SANFL players. The feeling was we wouldn't be competitive at all.

You're a shit troll, take stinkley back to Geelong with you

I dunno your mate ricciuto is up there. How's he going?

No doubt Roo needs to move on but with his Fox and Triple M jobs he has plenty of profile in football.

People are talking about Tredders again and he loves it.

He was completely out of his depth on radio tonight with Caro.

Pagan was a great coach at North Melbourne from 1993-2000 because he had great players to work with.

Wayne Carey, John Longmire and Mick Martyn all were 18 year olds in 1988. They were in their prime as 26 year olds in 1996.

Fremantle didnt win flags with their entry concessions was due to 2 or 3 factors.

1. Drafting and trading. That was obvious. Mind you Gerard Neesham chose lots of claremont guys. No different to Graham Cornes in 1991 choosing a lot of Glenelg players from that 1985-90 era. No different to Jack Cahill when he was Port Adelaides AFL coach in 1997 choosing a lot of Port Magpies from the 1990s.

Ben Allan was Dockers 1st captain from 1995-97. Won a WAFL premiership medal in 1987 as an 18 year old. Won a 2nd WAFL premiership medal under Neesham again as a 20 year old. He got taken at pick 14 in the 1989 VFL draft. He plays 94 games for the hawks from 1990-94. ONe of them was in the 1991 afl grand final. Goes to Freo at the end of 1994 and plays only 47 games.

2. Being Poorly run or having a substandard Board. Luck didnt come Freos way often from 1995-2010.

3. Money or lack of Money played a Part. Fremantle only had 6 weeks to scout players. Gold Coast and GWS had at least 1 year, if not a good 2 years of Looking at AFL experienced players to poach and YOung kids in the SANFL, WAFL, VFL and under 18s Talent league to look at.

Now Ports list was stacked with lots of SANFL players in 1997. The difference was they nailed and chosen certain players correctly and wisely. They chose some good mature agers between 20-24 years old.

Gold coast had 48 players on their Squad, While the other 16 sides at the time had only 38. 8 or 9 of those players had AFL experience from other clubs. the other 40 were basically Teenagers.

GWS had 58 players on their squad. GWS only had 8 players with AFL experience. The other 50 were essentially kids.

Port Adelaides 1997 AFL had 40 players. But I remember them Choosing a lot of Port Magpies. I know Darren Mead was one of them His debut game was on his 26th Birthday. Again.... Port chose some good mature agers between 20-24 years old. Michael Wilson won the rising star. He was Aged 20 years and 128 days old in round 1 of 1997. Roger James, Adam kingsley and Josh Francou were all in that 20-24 year old age bracket too.

Essientially.... Port Adelaides 1997 AFL squad was Similar to West coast 1987 VFL squad. Both of them had a moderate amount of 20-24 year olds on the list.

Brad Scott got your mob prelim finals in 2014 and 2015.

Both years Brad Scott got North Melbourne got to prelims, both years North finished 5th to 8th, Not in top 4 where teams had double chances.

So North in 2014 getting 6th with 14 wins and 8 losses was solid. To beat Essendon in that elim final and Cats narrowly a week later is impressive with the Squad North had. Again North were reliant on the old guys like Boomer Harvey and Todd Goldstein and Nic Dal Santo.

2015, North got 8th spot. Beat 5th placed Richmond at the MCG and Swans in NSW.

Again.... What Brad Scott did with that Limited North Melbourne squad was very good. I agree North didnt have in 2014-6 finals series had elite young kids in the calibre or Rozee, Butters or JHF or even Sam Powell Pepper.

Hinkley made 3 prelim finals in 2014, 2020 and 2021.

Port in 2013-24 had a better overall and More talented squad than What Brad Scott had in his coaching stint.

He was good during his first two years (2013-14) then we took his training wheels off (Richardson, Walsh) and he's continued to wobble and face plant ever since.

The journos are defending him because they don't like people picking on the special needs kid who can't bowl without the bumpers in place.

Crows are huge despite their lack of success.
When they win a flag you'll see they're like West Coast in terms of being a juggernaut.
And yet, Collingwood were abysmal until they change coaches. They should have been winning premierships every single year if all it takes is a large club that can easily get the best players.
Collingwood - biggest club in Australia.
Port Adelaide - little battler club from Alberton.
Then why didn't The Gold Coast and GWS win premierships due to their excessive entry concessions?
They're based in rugby league heartland and several key players wanted to head home to Victoria.
You wouldn't be calling him great had he coached Collingwood for 12 seasons without a grand final appearance.
Buckley coached there for a decade without winning any silverware.
He was given a farewell game and standing ovation by the Collingwood faithful.
Pies fans still love him.
Yeah, subpar coaches with bad upper management not holding them accountable.
Stability and carbon neutrality are priorities at Port.
AFL HQ need a game in SA every week and they can't risk Port going under, 2011-2012 is still fresh in the minds of many.

Port fans need to look at the Ricciuto situation at the Crows, and realise they are likely to end up with a situation like that at their own club if Tredrea gets to have a similar level of power and influence.

I think Collingwood love bucks in large part due to playing career. Something which donuts does not have with port. The better comparison is Brad Scott at north who was similarly reviled towards the end but it was also recognised he did it with less talent than donuts has at port

We have kochie and a board of AFL appointed stooges and Hinkley cultists, which is 100x worse
