Firstly, the "No Kane Cornes" Rule is back

If Amon joins hawks, we will get no compo for losing Gunston to free agency.
If McStay goes to Collingwood, Brisbane get no compo if they get Gunston.
Brisbane needs points to get Will Ashcroft.

I purpose we trade Gunston, 3rd, 4th, 5th round, and future 2nd round for Brisbane 1st round this year (13 at present).

That trade would leave Brisbane with significantly less points than they have now - would never happen.

We are the worst team in the league for clearances, and Grundy is elite in that category. That is why.

Reeves and Grundy can play in tandem, like Gawn and Jackson.

Lynch can be backup, as he really need to develop his tank.
If a top 4 team does not need Grundy - why does Hawthorn need him?

Collingwood have an unco ex-basketballer playing ruck.

Hawthorn are the worst team in the AFL for clearances because their midfilders are shite.

If you want to spend a million a year for 5 years spend it on a midfielder. Not a ruck.

My concern with Grundy is that his best years were 2018 and his peak was 2019, the 2020 and 2021 seasons he played 19 and 20 games respectively and didn't look as good as he had.

Don't get me wrong, still a ****ing insanely good ruckman. But his salary, and his price tag on the trade table will be based off the player he was in 2018 and 2019.

He is 28, arguably when a ruckman should be hitting their straps - and instead he's been steadily declining for two years. And we are supposedly rebuilding, so what's the logic in our big aquisition being 28 years old? Ask your Collingwood friends (don't have any? Me neither), Grundy also has a pretty serious knock - he can't play Key Position, he is a below average contested mark for his height.

Maybe he could bring our flag-challenging-window forward; but even with unheard of player development and trade savvy, that window is still atleast two more seasons away. Grundy will be 30, and if the trend continutes he'll be 5 years away from his incredible 2019 season.

Like he's so hot but it's a no from me.

We could re-negotiate the dollars in the contract to make it make sense. We need to spend to the cap floor now and we have a terrible list. We could front end the deal massively with our cap space leaving the final three years much lighter on salary to re-sign players or sign FAs.

Year 1 - 1.5 mill
Year 2 - 1.5 mill
Year 3 - 800k
Year 4 - 600k
Year 5 - 600k

You do realise that rucks are midfielders too right?

I want nothing to do with Grundy, he used to be an endurance beast and wear his opponents down a few years back. He’s now on a downward trajectory + injuries. Over 800k a year? Jesus no. They would have to give us their first to even think about it.
Reeves is 2 years away from being one of the best rucks in the game also

Bring in Amon FA
Bailey Banfield FA
Bruhn for our future second
Pick 7- Cadman
26- Best available mid

Trade Mitchell and JOM for what we can get. Hopefully jag a second rounder for one of them.

No they are not. They are ruckman. Big lumbering people who only get in the team because they are very tall and strong.

And that does not answer my question - if Collingwood don't need him, why do Hawthorn?

If Geelong don't need an elite Ruck, why do Hawthorn? Same for Sydney, Freo, Richmond, Brisbane and the Dogs. If none of them need an elite ruck why do Hawthorn? Melbourne is the only team in the top 8 with an elite ruck.

You do not pay ruckman $1m and you certainly don't do it for 5 years.

When did he sign this long term insanely lucrative contract?

Might be why his output hasn’t matched when looking to re-sign

Ok now I get it, you think it's still the 1970's
Gawn, Nankervis, Nankervis, Lycett, Nankervis, Boyd, McEvoy, McEvoy, Bailey, Mumford, Ottens, Jolly, Ottens, Campbell, Ottens, Cox, Jolly, Lade, Keating, Keating, Keating, Barnes

They are all the premiership ruckman this century. I count two out and out superstars and they only have one premiership each. About half of them were traded in.

You do not pay ruckman $1m a year.

Because Collingwood need DeGoey, Taranto and others, so they need the space. Their cap space issues are still limiting them.

Also we wouldn’t be paying a million a year for him.

We need running midfielders. Hawthorn need to keep throwing darts until that part of the ground is settled. Then like Geelong (Ottens), Richmond (Nankervis), Hawthorn (McEvoy), Collingwood (Jolly), Bulldogs (Boyd) Hawthorn can go trade for a reliable ruckman.

Or alternatively Reeves will be that ruckman.

One of my other concerns with Grundy is he is a full time ruckman. He does not play forward, he does not play back, he is a run all day ruckman. That is the whole point of him. Where does that leave Reeves development?

We have a young ruck, back him in. If it doesn't work go get another one when we need one - at half the cost.
