Firstly, the "No Kane Cornes" Rule is back

Loved Haynes a few years ago but didn't watch much GWS this year so not sure how cooked he looks now. His stats this year still have him as above average 1-on-1 and at intercept marking. I think we could use his leadership too with so many outgoing senior players.

Playing Haynes also opens us up to moving Jiath or Day to the wing or even Scrimshaw up forward, both places we really require more talent.

A first rounder to eat his salary makes this a no brainer in my opinion.

I would have thought the Pies would baulk at giving us 16 for Mitchell if they had 27 from the Grundy trade...much harder to sell to their fan base.

The question is, if they offered us only 27, should we say "no deal" and push for 16, in the knowledge that Mitchell would then be a Hawk next year if they didn't blink?

There is also the argument that straight 27 might be better in some eyes, giving us 6, 24 and 27, rather than 6 and 16 in the first two rounds. I'd ceratinly lean towards 3 picks inside 30 rather than 2. The club would know which specific players they would want, and decide if 2 picks was better than 3, or vice versa.
Yes I would like to see MM play hardball on getting pick 16 and just feel like this whole stigmatism of the hawks are easily bet over in trades will need to change negotiations like this. We all know the chances of Wright eventually caving in is high. There is however a huge risk in having to bring back a disgruntled Mitchell if it all goes south though.

Because very reliable sources have confirmed them. One caveat. Grundy deal is done to Melbourne, and Hopper deal hits a snag with Richmond, BUT, again I am told, they may even do the Haynes deal to remove his 1.8m from their books and be properly prepared for a FA onslaught. Not subjective at all.
Alsmypal had intel that confirmed the Haynes salary dump offer as well Tops. Did your source confirm what was on offer for taking on his whole salary? We all know GWS are cheap AF when it comes to parting with draft collateral. I have no doubt they're willing to move him but my question is what for.

Would Haynes come to us? Not clear where he’s fit in backline (without crowding out opps for DGB, Blanck, Jeka etc) and conflicting with Sicily.
Also seems on the decline - had a pretty average season.

If bowes gets pick 7 what does Haynes get in a salary dump (if really 1.8m over two years?) - Ie is pick 15 or 18 enough? (Seems unders vs bowes deal).

Attaching a pick to a salary dump is a new concept, but I doubt most clubs will be as insanely generous like GC have been with the Bowes trade. GC have a habit of throwing away 1st round picks to get a trade done. (like they did with the Lachie Weller & Jeremy Sharp trades)

I think a more realistic outcome would be GWS trading Haynes & a mid teen pick for our pick 24, or a future 2nd round pick. I'm not suggesting that's a good return, I think it's a more realistic result of what might eventuate. Such a one-sided trade like the Bowes situation will be a rarity.

So during trade negotiations, a club that doesn’t think an offer is good enough won’t refer to the points calculator to support their argument?

I wouldn't have thought so, unless it's involving F/S or Academy points matching bids.

Otherwise I think it's just nerds on here that get all giddy about it using it as some sort of supercomputer type tool.

You would think that if Haynes is the inferior player in the trade and his contract is worth 200k more, depending how desperate GWS are to clear cap space then a pick before 7 is more appropriate. I think GWS are smarter in trades though so might not attach anything too early.

I highly doubt Haynes would come to us. Doesn’t fit our age demographic. He won’t be contending with us and he didn’t barrack for us as a child!
Don’t fixate too much on the age demographic, which I believe would be fine. We really are after the Picks.

All that said, Whitfield ticks the other boxes, but GWS would be reluctant. It is more bang for their buck, but the Hopper trade would have to disintegrate.

Haynes is a chance regardless. Not saying it is locked, as of Friday, far, far from it.

Imaginary as it may be, it is an accepted tool for measuring and comparing the value of something that is otherwise not easy to quantify.

I can’t imagine that people who actually trade for a living wouldn’t use to their advantage.

Hawthorn, led by coach Sam Mitchell, who gave the most impressive pitch and offered more money in the last two years of a four-year deal.

Adelaide was the most desperate to get him while Brisbane was understood to be incentivised by the draft pick and points on offer.

But Geelong’s interest spans over more than 18 months and came well before the lure of pick 7 while Bowes wasn’t interested in going to a rebuilding club after spending six years at the Suns.

Bowes has obvious links to former Suns skipper Gary Ablett and his relationship with Dangerfield stems back to his time with the Allies under-18 team, with the premiership midfielder driving him back to Melbourne after assisting coach Brenton Sanderson.

Dangerfield has wrapped his arms around Bowes ever since, becoming a confidant for him throughout his career.

Cats coach Chris Scott, Dangerfield and recruitment manager Andrew Mackie were all part of a meeting with Bowes where they pitched a role that would see him used across the every part of the ground, rotating through the middle like many of the players.

Bowes is understood to now be jumping out of his skin to play at Geelong and earn a spot in the team’s best 22.

Until they are free agents and we can’t get fair value for them anymore like Smith and Gunston

Off topic but IMO this is the clubs fault.

They “forced” Mitch and Tazz out, followed it up by sending hodge into early retirement. It’s forever been sold as “superannuation” top up for the loyal soldiers, but for me, it was an appalling way to treat our senior players. They still had something to give and they gave it at other clubs. Did we improve as a result - no and yet we hear again and again in here that we need to be brutal. Stuff that

We may one day hear whether it did have an impact on those left at the club and enticing players to come play for the club

It set the tone going forward and players becoming FA are up and leaving rather than stay and mentor - sad state of affairs

Does Haynes 1) actually want to leave GWS at all , and 2) also want to come to Hawthorn?

Seems good on paper putting forward deals that suit us, however convincing someone to pack up their life and move to a different state and new club within 24 hours seems ambitious, particularly when they are under contract for another 2 years and don’t actually have to do anything at all.

How does that conversation go firstly within GWS, one of their few founding players left?

“listen mate, you’ve been here from the start and gone through all the tough years, you stayed and re-signed when others were jumping ship and had your body smashed for this club for over decade, you’re a B&F winner here and an All Australian, but we couldn’t get a deal done for Hopper who wants to leave us so you need to GTFO and pick between either Hawthorn or Essendon”.

Hodge was very happy to retire. Crazy money changed his mind.

Mitchell and Lewis were not forced out. Discussions about their future were had as they were with Roughy in 2017/18. Mitchell and Roughy took it well, Lewis did not.

If someone like Jack Gunston wants to make a lifestyle decision to move to Brisbane he won’t say no if Mitchell and Lewis both played out their career as Hawks. Players will do what’s best for them at the time.

If they had interest over such an extended period, why was pick 7 on the table? 🤔

Because the AFL changed the salary dump rules. Geelong now want the rules changed again to not require them to use a future second rounder for GC. They would potentially like to use a 2024 pick instead. Richmond same in the Hopper trade. This is what I am told.

Geelong don’t have a future 2nd rounder. They will get Bowes and pick 7 for their future third.

I was saying GWS could easily add a couple of DFAs to fill some spots
They could, but why would they do that when they have three picks in the teens and no real need to wipe them out for Pick 6?

I feel like we’re just wishing or hoping that other clubs make a complete blunder.

They may still want to take a kid, this way they can still get a top 25 player plus Mitchell

I’m sorry I’m confused.

If the Pies are holding 16, 25 and 27, why would they give us 16 for Tom and 24 to get a kid?

They can just hold pick 16 and give us one of the second rounders.

Oh, I get it, they've signed him up to be runner.

Yep, pies really like Lewis Hayes, which will be pick 16
